Penn Opinions

Hi, I"m currently a senior in the south looking to return to the North for college, I've been looking at schools in VA, PA, etc. I was wondering how some current students like Penn and why they picked it over their other choices, especially any biomechanical / biology people :)) Looking for a safe school with decent food, a nice community, and good opportunities

Looking to improve

hi I’m looking to help improve! for some background info I’ve had really terrible posture which I’m working on rn, which has made my double chin worse since I’m pulling my head back more.. even tho I’m underweight which I’m also working on. my skin never seems to improve, I wash twice a day and use sunscreen and moisturizer but it’s always red and reactive. i’ve been using the cerave cleanser for normal to oily and laroche posay moisturizer. Since my skin is so reactive when I tried a cleansing oil, it broke me out. Also recently started using.centella sunscreen but I’m scared it’s breaking me out too…I eat clean, avoid sugar dairy whenever possible… just looking for any tips or suggestions!!

What Ivys to Consider?

Hi! Since Common App just opened I've been hit by the I'm-next truck for the college chopping block.... I'm interested in applying to Ivy's just for fun so I was wondering what might be a good fit! Right now I've only considered UAH because I can get full-ride but I'm open to a prestigious school too. I know my application is definitely lacking to other Ivy-hopefuls but I'm just curious!

Stats:
gpa 4.2UW, 4.3 W (my school operates where all classes are honors so we're on a 4.5 scale)

rank: na/92

ACT 33 (27, 35, 36 but retaking in October for Math)

SAT: n/a (taking in October also)

major: biology/premed track; still deciding on minor

Female, Asian/White, competitive public high school in Alabama 30% acceptance rate

4 aps, but school doesn't offer that many. All courses are honors

4's in ap bio + ap lang, 3's in csp + calc ab

3's across the board on Avant STAMP Chinese test after first year, taking another year for full 2 language creds

ecs:

  1. Class elected Secretary Junior and Senior year, planned and executed school-wide dance and helped student-leadership communication through surveys and more socialization. Specifically boosted engagement with events by creating advertisements and competitions. Very involved with improving school.
  2. Beta Club Reporter Junior and Senior year, helped plan each volunteer and service opportunities as well as marketed for each. Run the official school account
  3. 2 years of Archery, 2 years of tennis, had to take a break from both due to Junior year complication (will explain beneath)
  4. 1 year of cross country and guitar club but those are less important due to less commitment
  5. Volunteered for habitats for humanity to build homes for lower-income families during summers.
  6. My Junior year I was hit with a genetic neuropathy that caused intense pain in my hands radiating up to my elbows which disallowed me from writing or typing much, leading to as you can imagine tons of complications with learning and testing. Surprisingly coped well so my GPA didn't plummet too badly but definitely set me back with my standardized test studying(still am dealing with the condition so we'll see how that goes) relying on voice-typing mostly
  7. Worked for my father's law firm under his office manager as a receptionist, learned clearer communication skills with clients and setting professional boundaries, assisted clients through intake forms and built case portfolios.
  8. Played the piano for about 10 years, guitar for 2, and started harp 2 months- quit all during junior year due to hand issues
  9. Tutored freshmen during free periods unofficially so I'm not sure whether I can count it

Totally okay with any critiques, insights, tips, etcetera I'm very intimidated by this whole progress haha! I want a pretty warm diverse student body and good internship/job opportunities (and maybe abroad opportunities)

Thank you so much!!

Tired of White People(and other races) being obsessed with Asian cultures

So I’m Waisan and maybe that negates some of my claims but my whole life I grew up learning and experiencing my Asian and Irish culture. I enjoy both parts of my identity and I’m proud to like my heritage. However, with this whole rise of Americans in particular “trendifying” parts of Asian culture it offends me to think something so integral to my is just a trend. It’s almost seen as corny to like certain things because of Joe popular they are, like boba. And don’t get me started on this “I’m in a very Chinese time of my life” and people acting like they’re more unique because they started drinking tea. I guess my feelings are pretty complicated on this issue. I‘m open to any thoughts people have!
