Should I be worried about the aleks exam if I want to take calc 1?

Hi!! I’m hoping to take calculus down the road, and im a little scared for the aleks assessment lol. I’ve taken precalc but I as a junior and finished with like a 93 I believe, then this year I took ap stat (I really regret not taking ap calc but I thought id be going down a different path). I’m worried I won’t remember much of the content on the assessment since it’s been a minute. Ik you get 3 attempts I just really don’t want to have to do more than 2 lol

BU MPH vs Pitt MPH? Having a hard time deciding

Hello! I'm currently trying to decide between Boston University and the University of Pittsburgh for an MPH in Epidemiology with a MCH Certificate, and I'm honestly stuck.

Academically, I like both programs. The faculty, research opportunities, and overall fit seem strong at both schools, which is making this decision way harder than I expected. At BU, there are way more faculty doing research in my research area of interests, while there are some at BU, but not as much.

A little context: I'm interested in maternal and child health, epidemiology, and research, and I'm hoping to eventually attend medical school. My goal is to use the MPH to build a strong foundation in epidemiologic methods and population health so that I can integrate public health perspectives into clinical practice. I hope to pursue a career where I can combine patient care, research, and public health initiatives particularly in areas related to maternal and child health and continue conducting research that informs evidence-based interventions and health policy.

Right now, some of the things I'm weighing are:

  • Research opportunities and mentorship (I strongly want to go into research, and would love an environment that would be filled with resources and people who are helping me grow)
  • Strength of the epidemiology training and the practical transferable public health and research skills I can carry forward throughout my career
  • Networking and career opportunities
  • Student culture and overall quality of life
  • Graduate Outcomes
  • Access to hospitals, research institutes, and public health organizations

Boston seems to have an incredible concentration of research institutions and opportunities, but the cost of living is honestly intimidating. Pitt seems more affordable and I've had really positive interactions with faculty and staff there, but I don't know as much about the long-term opportunities compared to Boston.

For anyone who attended either program (or considered both), what ultimately made you choose one over the other? Looking back, would you make the same decision again? Would especially love to hear from MPH students, alumni, or anyone who has worked in public health research after graduating.

Sorry for the long message, I am just hoping this helps get answers with context. Thanks!!!!

Incoming Pitt transfer student urgently looking for short-term housing/sublet ASAP

Hey everyone,

I’m an incoming transfer student at University of Pittsburgh and I recently got screwed over with my housing situation after arriving in Pittsburgh.

I’m now trying to find a better short-term living arrangement ASAP, ideally within the next week or two.

I’m looking for:

  • furnished sublets
  • short-term leases
  • student-friendly apartments
  • private room preferred
  • near Pitt/CMU

Price honestly isn’t the biggest concern right now. I mainly care about finding something comfortable and reliable.

If anyone knows of:

  • available sublets
  • lease takeovers
  • good apartment buildings
  • housing groups/resources
  • or anyone trying to fill a room

please let me know. I’d really appreciate it.

From Australia considering Pitt Emergency Medicine — how is the program + social life?”

Hey everyone,

I’m considering applying to the University of Pittsburgh’s Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medicine program. I’m really interested in emergency medicine/paramedicine and Pitt’s program seems pretty unique, so I’m trying to learn more before I apply.

I wanted to ask:

  • How is the Emergency Medicine program overall?
  • Would you recommend it?
  • How are the professors, workload, clinical experiences, and opportunities?
  • Is Pitt good for making friends and meeting people?
  • What’s the social life like there? Parties, college culture, student atmosphere, etc.?
  • How is Pittsburgh itself for students?

I’d really appreciate honest opinions from current students or anyone familiar with the program. Thanks!

Reminder to Rate your Landlords and Professors

As everyone heads home for summer, I just wanted to take a second to reflect on the past year at MSU. East Lansing always has a way of turning chaos into memories somehow.

This year was a mix of late nights, random memories, stressful moments, great people, and a lot of lessons learned. Now that classes and finals are mostly behind us, it feels like the perfect time to leave some honest feedback that could help other students next semester.

If you lived off-campus this year, especially if you dealt with a landlord or property company, consider sharing your experience on https://judgemylandlord.com . Good landlords deserve recognition, and bad ones shouldn’t keep getting away with ruining students’ housing situations. Your review could genuinely help another student avoid signing a nightmare lease next year.

And if you haven’t already, take a few minutes to review your professors on https://www.ratemyprofessors.com too. A lot of students rely on those reviews when choosing classes, and honestly, the professor you get can completely change your experience in a course.

We have way more power as students than we think. Sharing honest experiences makes college life more transparent for everyone coming after us.

Hope everyone has an amazing summer, stays safe, and enjoys the break. And congrats again to all the graduating seniors ❤️

How hard is it to get tower C?

I’m an incoming freshman at Pitt. I just filled out my housing application and put tower C as my first choice because I love my privacy and need my own space. How hard is it to get? Do more freshman choose doubles or single? Should I still look for a roommate just incase?

bing or pitt

Hi everyone!

I’ve already committed to Bing but I am now having second thoughts and thinking about decomitting. I’m from upstate NY but also grew up in the city, and have definitely been missing an urban atmosphere. I did not get to tour either campus :(

The difference in cost is roughly $8k/year, but is manageable as I also have some outside scholarships.

I’m also admitted as a chemistry major and am looking to do research. I am not sure if I’m headed down the pre-med route or any other route. How easy is research to come by here?

Thanks!

giving away furniture

Hey folks,

I just graduated from Pitt and have to get rid of a bunch of furniture ASAP. Here's a list of what I'm trying to get rid of:

dresser
desk
chair
bed (mattress+frame)
side table
floor lamp

I normally wouldn't post on here but I'm getting zero bites on FBM. I'll give everything for free, except for probably the mattress but even that price is up for negotiation. You'd have to be able to pick up the pieces, but I'm located in central oakland so if you're living on/ close to campus it's pretty convenient. Let me know if you're interested!

Pass/No Pass -Acceptance Rescinded

I’m an incoming freshman. Currently pre-med and I didn’t know that DE classes would count toward the med school application gpa. I currently have 2 B’s in calc 1 and intro to chem. I thought I could try them out in HS first, then take it for real in college and do well. It’s totally my fault, I wanted to relax in my last quarter and didn’t put in the work. It’s too late now to change it. I would like to “save” the B’s for harder classes. Does anyone know if Pitt will rescind my acceptance if I take them Pass/No Pass?

Cool Rare Cathedral of Learning Memorabilia

I collect Pitt memorabilia and this is one of my favorite pieces. In honor of the Cath’s 100th birthday, I wanted to share this wood commemorative piece. I believe it was given out for the opening/dedication but haven’t fully confirmed this. I got this at an antiques shop in Lawrenceville years ago and have never seen another one IRL or online.

If anyone knows more about it, I’d love to know.

Car or no car?

Is it worth having a car if you live off campus and live a mile from most of the buildings you go to? Do most people walk or is it easier to drive? How hard is it to find parking near the bio/chem buildings for classes?

Mizzou vs University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg for medicine

My sister is graduating from high school soon, and she received great offers at the University of Missouri and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. She wants to study biology in undergrad with the ultimate goal of becoming a doctor, but she is also interested in exploring nursing. Which school would be best for her?

Edit: Both are offering her the same amount of financial aid

Oakland Map - Cathedral of Learning at 100!

Birdseye view I made of Oakland to celebrate 100 years since the start of construction on the Cathedral of Learning. Had a great time making this one and seeing how much has changed since I was a student at Pitt!

Considering major in bio, biochem, or chem - how difficult are the reqs?

Hello!! I’m an incoming freshman currently undeclared in dietrich. I’m going to wait one or two terms to declare but the majors I mentioned are the ones im interested in as of right now. I’ve taken 7 aps so im going to enter with a few gen ed reqs and I’ll probably have some space to take a few other classes pertaining to my interests. How bad is say physics 1, or I guess the more intermediate classes since I already have a 5 on ap bio? I’m worried the difficulty of some of the science classes will scare me off from my interests 😭

Feeling unsafe in South Oakland

Hi all,
I recently posted about my car getting stolen from outside of my apartment (it has since been found). Just today, I have seen a notification for anther stolen car right by the same area. Then, I get back from work and find a makeshift lockpick on my porch. I live on bates.

What is even going on? Is it always like this? I feel like anytime I walk around men are staring more than before, there’s more crime, and I did not notice all of these issues until it warmed up. I was here last summer and it didn’t seem so bad. Anyone else having problems? It’s hard to feel safe here anymore, and I committed anther apartment in south Oakland for next semester which I’m feeling regretful of );

thoughts on UPJ?

im a korean american from southern california seeking a BSN, and recently got into pitt at the johnstown campus. My family is not very well off, and tuition is a huge concern, and fortunately i got a full ride. im a huge extrovert and believe college is what you make out of it , but im just still a little concerned just like everyone else.
something im really scared of however is the social life and just living conditions in UPJ however. So im wondering if anyone has any thoughts of advice for me as an upcoming freshmen.
some questions i have are
-are there fun activities to do outside of campus? Malls, events, downtown areas, etc
- are there cultural clubs that are actually fun?
- hows the food?
- is the winter THAT bad
- what are some specific things I should bring since traveling back and forth isn't going to be an option for me since i live in california?
