Edward Burtynsky, Shipyard #11, Qili Port, Zhejiang Province, China
Edward Burtynsky is known for documenting the impact of human industry on the natural world. His work, featuring subjects like quarries, mines and oil fields, creates a tension between abstract, painterly beauty and unsettling environmental destruction.
Burtynsky’s Shipyard series (2005) is a striking collection of photographs documenting the massive, booming shipbuilding industry in China. Primarily shot at the Qili Port in Zhejiang Province, these photographs capture the overwhelming scale, intricate geometry and vibrant industrial palettes of modern maritime construction.
Shipyard #11 serves as a reflection on the rapid globalization, hyper-industrialization, and environmental transformation occurring in 21st-century China. With over 12,000 workers using 500,000 tons of steel, Qili port shipyards build about 250 ships per year.
