My take on a Square Omni case.

My take on a Square Omni case.

After taking some less than good natured ribbing from a friend over pictures of my quick and dirty wood block and poly shank protector, I decided to cobble together a 3d printed case for the unit.

I saw there were a bunch of heavy duty commercial units for sale, but they were costly and to be honest, I don't think the Omni needs it. Primarily, it needs protection for the cameras and IR arrays (which comes from a piece of insertable polycarbonate you can buy cheaply at Home Depot). The rest of the case is there to prevent dings and dents and hold the poly in place.

Prototype one shown here was a little shorter than I wanted and didn't have vents all the way around. Also forgot to add a slot to stop the poly screen at the bottom.

I've got the latest print running now, if anyone's interested in testing it out I'll share. Likewise, if anyone has any feedback (beyond the color, I'm using up a boatload of white I had from a previous project) go for it.

Going in on CC1 Canvas upgrade - anything I should know first?

Besides reading the instructions and maybe watching a YouTube video or two?

I'm on the stock firmware. Haven't been printing much lately while waiting for the Canvas to arrive, and now I'm on the fence as to whether I should try OpenCentauri before, after the upgrade, or not at all.

My Omni impressions thus far - this thing is pretty damn accurate

So I had the misfortune of having the Omni arrive when I was on the road for work and have been busy since it turned up, so my testing has been a little spread out and disorganized. I did get a chance to use it several times on a grass range where I have basically full reign, so my son and I did a little testing measuring using a laser rangefinder and Google maps as verification for certain targets.

The results? Distance was within 3-5% in most cases. Hitting a driver but not swinging for the fences and with the caveat of using range balls that are both not the greatest and pretty sure they're range limited, on average the carry distance of 185 yards was matched by the device to within 3-5% on the under side (average reading on the device was 178 yards). I was lucky enough to choose a day where there was next to no wind (a rarity here). Location seemed to be fairly accurate as well; I had my son step these off so they're way more approximate but I'd say we were easily within the same percentages there as well.

One random note - the unit is splash resistant and brother, did I get to test it. Out of the clear blue, we went from sun to darker skies to all of a sudden a downpour. This was before I had a case for the unit so it got a good dose of water before I got it into my backpack. No operational issues with it after.

One thing I've been struggling with is consistently getting club data when I'm outdoors. This could be a function of me not having much time, I'm usually scrambling to the range when I have a few minutes free so making sure the hitting area is defined and the club stickers are in the right spots has not been my focus thus far. I set up a hitting net outside in my yard so I'm going to see if there's something I'm not doing right or if club data is just harder to acquire outdoors. So far, out of the 5 sessions I've had I've only gotten club data once. Indoors, for all 3 sessions I've had full club data, except for the very first where I was setting up too far back in the hitting area.

Last random note - durability. I did buy a piece of polycarbonate to make a shank screen, but in my haste to get it going I started without it. No issue for me, but my son proceeded to shank one right into the unit. Like a Timex, it took a licking and kept on ticking. But that prompted me to get the poly up and since then no issues.

What's a good source for maximizing launch monitor data for game improvement?

I'm still not so patiently awaiting my Omni pre-order. I've got an R10 which I enjoy, but some of the data I've found to be a bit suspect so I don't focus too much on using the data to fine tune my swing.

That's going to change the the Omni. I'm a high handicapper and relatively new, started playing last year. I'm familiar with ball flight physics but not as much with how certain data could be used to optimize your swing.

Is there a good resource - website, book, etc to help out there? Something that you can leverage to say ok, my AoA is positive but I'm swinging a 9 iron it should be negative, here are some possible things to try to correct. I've been feeding my results into AI and getting feedback and drills, which has been helpful but I'd love to understand the more detailed club and ball data better.

Latest Playbetter Omni update - not great

So as I had expected last time around, there were no units this week. Unfortunately, their latest update says that they expect units next week. This language is different from their last update, when they knew units were inbound.

To make mattress worse, the other vendors have told people they don't expect more units until late July. Sounds like they're being direct with people and Playbetter is not.

I had defended them in the past, but it looks like if I end up getting this launch monitor from them it'll be the last purchase I make there. Don't mind being delayed, but really don't like being misled.

Any young adult sports leagues in BR?

Looking for some possible basketball/baseball options for young adults, 18-25. I know the youth leagues tend to cut off before that point, not sure if there's anything recreational available in the neighborhood or nearby.

Jewelry as a graduation gift - cufflinks?

I wanted to buy a keepsake piece of jewelry for my son who's graduating college. His primary gift is going to be cash, but I wanted to give him something that he'd have as a keepsake, a small piece of jewelry, which he generally doesn't wear.

I was going to buy him a watch, but he was against that as he's a smartwatch guy and would never wear it.

Bracelets and things are out of the question, and he's already got a small gold chain that he wears regularly. I figured as a new professional, a pair of cufflinks might be suitable.

Does the younger crowd still wear cufflinks?
