Which is correct, and why? This has always confused me.

Any Idea What’s Causing This?

Zone 5b. Hoping you all can help with what might be causing this, including the interesting circular pattern. It’s been there for about 2 months and it’s growing in size. The rest of the lawn is generally fine, albeit stressed from heat and dryness.
