Why don't more small seconds watches put the date inside the subdial?
Random design question: why is the date-inside-small-seconds layout so uncommon?
I get why it can go wrong. The subdial is already small, so adding a date window means the seconds track, numerals, hand, and date all start fighting for the same bit of space. If the date font is too small, it becomes annoying to read. If it is too big, the whole lower half of the dial looks heavy.
But when it works, I kind of like it more than a date window at 3. It keeps the main dial cleaner, and the date feels less like an afterthought. Maybe it is just harder to execute cleanly at normal watch sizes?
