Using REWIRE with Sibelius

I've been trying to use Sibelius with REWIRE, and keeping running into problems. My goal is to be able to have REAPER host my sounds (whether that be a backing track I'm composing to, or the Sibelius instrument sounds, as they sound much better using a sampler in REAPER instead of General MIDI, and it's less resource intensive than Note Performer). I want to be able to playback from either software and have them synced up.

I managed to get REWIRE working for the sounds (I wrote up my method as a tutorial here mostly for my own reference : https://adriandelima.github.io/posts/using-rewire-with-reaper-and-sibelius/ but basically it's using Macos' built in virtual midi cable, and creating a custom playback config in Sibelius, and routing everything through Sibelius' mixer. Far too complicated, but once setup it seems to work ok).

The problem I'm having now, is getting playback synced, which in theory should be the simplest thing. If I press play from REAPER, everything plays back in time. If I playback from Sibelius, there's a 1 beat delay with the Sibelius sound, so my score get's out of sync with my backing track. I'm working in Sibelius, so I need to be able to playback from there, can't be swapping programmes every time I want to hear something. Is there any work around for this?

Does Macos seriously not offer any display scaling options?

After only ever using my MBP internal display, I was very surprised to learn that when I use an external monitor (mine's 24") the display doesn't scale. I either have to deal with blurry UI by setting the monitor to 1080p, or tiny UI using the native 1440p resolution.

I saw on the apple support page there's supposed to be an option to set display density of the built in display, but I don't have that option, only a list of resolutions, and that probably only applies to the built in screen anyway.
Is this seriously the case? Like how does anyone use a large display like this....

I'm on sequoia, and trying to use a 24" 1440p monitor

Constant crashing on project

I have about 25 hours of footage I've pulled from youtube to cut down and do a compilation. It's separated into individual files of about 2h each. Each file is 1080p mp4, h.264, with AAC or Opus audio. This is in a project on my external drive, a 2tb WD Black nyme, which has 180gb free. I'm using FCP 12.2, Macos 15.7.7, M1pro, 16gb ram

I'm running into a lot of beachballing and lag when trying to do anything with the footage, even just skimming through it. The whole project hangs, and Final cut crashes, even if I do something as simple as select a file in the library.

What's going, my device should be able to handle this footage with relative ease. Even if it lags a bit it shouldn't be crashing as much as it is. I've tried copying the footage into a new project, same problem. I've not transcoded the footage or made proxies, as I don't have the space for that, or the time to wait for it to transcode (it's really slow, like 1% per hour for each file and I've >15), but I've worked with raw h.264 before without transcoding so that shouldn't be a problem.

Any help appreciated.

EDIT:

It appears the solution was to re-encode my footage that had Opus audio. Seems like FCP doesn't like anything with Opus. On original import, the "creating thumbnails and waveforms" would stall and stop, so perhaps it also has something to do with that, FCP not managing to generate waveforms for Opus audio, and then the whole system bugs.

Optimising session

I've never been much into optimising my Logic sessions, but I'm getting quite tired of waiting for beachballs and lag. Especially towards the end of a project, the session tends to get quite heavy (eating into swap memory a lot).

I tend to work with large orchestral sessions, so each instrument has its own track, and there ends up being a lot of them (100+). I use Kontakt for my sounds, so this ends up getting very bloated with so many instances running. I know you can run multiple instruments in one Kontakt instance, but that only seems useful iff the instruments are doubling each-other. Since I'm actively working on the project, freezing also doesn't seem like a particularly viable option. If I purge Kontakt samples, it eventually builds up again and gets slow.

I use an M1pro 16gb
What's the best way to optimise your session?
