Who’s made the switch from Studio One?

I’ve been using studio one for PC for long enough now here I’m really used to it. I’m considering making the switch to Mac for music production and I was thinking I might make the jump to Logic Pro too. I know I can run Studio One on Mac too but I want to hear from people who have made the switch over to Logic (or maybe went the other way) and how you think the two DAWs compare?

In my case, I am almost exclusively hardware for recording and then software for mixing and mastering. I run 5 synths at once and a drum machine, then I process everything and master with plugins. How’s the workflow? Is it great for really tight MIDI tempo/automation running to several synths? Thank you!

Is it possible to have volume automation without losing access to the faders?

I use a nanoKontrol device to control the faders in Logic. When I add the volume automation, I can only seem to adjust the overall level with the trim. Is there a way to still do this with the faders?

I'm trying to learn how to get sounds like Current Joys/ Glom. How can I achieve these with Logic?

I have two examples I want to share:

Current Joys - New Flesh

  • They are good at making their songs sound very lofi and simple. I'm going through the library of samples available through Logic, by going through "Electronic Drum Kits" and having a beat loop and just scrolling, and there's very few ones that sort of sound similar. So would I be able to just pick from those few and is it really come down to adding things like Compression/EQ/Reverb? If so, what are specific things I should make sure to do?
  • There's a youtube video of someone trying to recreate the song, and they isolated the drums which is helpful but none of the Logic samples sound the same. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1p_hbPzSOU&t. Should I be looking to just download new drum samples online? If so where?

Glom - Glass

  • It's a basic snare/kick/closed hi hat for the main sample. It sounds like they used a real drum kit rather than an electronic kit. I've tried going through all of logic's drum kits and then choosing the different kick/snares that are available, and then messing around with the dampening/tuning. And then I tried to add some compressor and reverb, but it still seems lacking.

Is there any way to achieve these sounds? Thank you!

Guitar effects processing via send/bus is not sounding the same as when I use the same effects as inserts

Hello! I double tracked the guitar parts for a song I am working on, so I have 2 guitar tracks - one is hard-panned left and one is hard-panned right. Currently, I have all effects as inserts on each individual guitar track. I want the effects applied to each guitar track to be identical, so I want to process all of the effects via a bus. If I understand correctly, this should allow me to bus both tracks to a single aux channel and make adjustments in the aux channel to both guitars' sounds simultaneously (instead of changing something on L Guitar, then copy/pasting the setting to the same insert on R Guitar). However, when I listen to one of the tracks where the effects are all inserted and compare it to a copy of that track when I process it via bus, they don't sound identical.

My effects chain (as shown in the first picture in the below link) is:
Melodyne --> Noise gate --> Amp sim --> EQ --> Another EQ --> Compressor

To try to execute the same processing via send, in the guitar track, I turned off everything after Melodyne (as shown in second pic in the link), and I inserted all effects from Gate to Compressor into the aux channel (3rd pic). However, when I compare the track where I processed everything with inserts (in series), it sounds different than when I processed everything via bussing (parallel). This is the case whether I set the output of the guitar track to "No Out", directly to the bus, or keep it going to Stereo Out. It also doesn't help if I change post pan/post fader/pre fader, and I confirmed the settings for all effects in the aux channel are identical to as they are when inserted to the guitar track.

Pictures of my channels

Thank you so much to anyone that can help me!!

Why is Logic Pro so hard to use?

I’ve been trying to make beats for the longest and why is it so hard to import audio samples to Logic Pro and why is it so hard to access your own plugins like it’s a plane cockpit lol

New Logic update - time to switch?

I'm still on Logic 11, permanent license.. I held back on updating because I saw people complain about Logic 12 requiring regular online verification which sounds annoying. I don't see anything about this in the update notes, is this still an issue?

Basically, would you recommend updating? Please note, I don't use a lot of the features Apple is most keen on updating. I don't want an AI band, I don't want insta-sound tools, I hardly use the sound library or Alchemy or Beat whatever. I have 3rd party plugins and prioritize the basic DAW functionality for recording, editing and mixing.

I did read people complaining about controller support in Logic 11, I see some update notes on that, how has 12 been doing with that? I don't have a controller atm but I might want to get a Presonus Faderport.

Also: I think it's kind of stupid that I can bounce tracks as 32bit but then lose all kinds of basic edit functions. Can Logic 12 finally edit 32bit audio?

Oh, and one more. Logic seems to be a bit hit-and-miss with sidechaining, where some 3rd party plugins that should have sidechain don't offer it in Logic. How's that going?

Does anyone have good advice on the best ways to go about sends and buses or outputs for a project / recommend good videos?

Hello, I’ve been using Logic for a while, mainly for fun but recently I’ve been taking it more serious and I’m good on computer storage but sometimes these recent projects start spiking CPU usage and overloading the program. It’s for a few reasons primarily but a main reason is the buses and sends and how I use them. Buses is something I’m really not familiar with but I know if I utilize it correctly then I won’t run into CPU spikes. I’m just confused on that and how I should be using the sends.

Mainly, I always use stock instruments , then add more plugins (but never too much), then I just have it set to wherever. Eventually though, everything gets organized into stacks. I just want to know good advice, as I’m starting new projects and I can get the best results for everything. Or if you know any good videos or other discussions that you could link, that would also be really helpful. Thanks!

Apple Phasing Out Rosetta by macOS 27.0

For those who don't know apple is phasing out Rosetta for all apps apart from a couple of old games from macOS 27.0. This is an absolute disaster for composers who ever need to revisit old projects, most of us I'm guessing, especially in the film/trailer/production music space.

Does anyone have suggestions for how we can make sure apple hears us on this issue and we can push to keep Rosetta in Logic?

Clarity vx turns itself off when in loop

The issue is that when I apply clarity to an audio track in logic, and set it on loop, maybe because I want to be working on eq settings, every time the loops goes back to the beginning, clarity gets turned off. And the grading wheel goes back to its original position, so with every loop I have to turn the plugin on, and turn the wheel again to the desired level. It has also done it when running without the loop and reaching a new clip, but here it seems to be failing less consistently.

School requires Logic Pro X

So my sister is planning on enrolling in a music school and they let her know in advance that they will be using Logic Pro X, which is exclusive to Mac, but my sister has Windows so we brainstormed about how we can solve this problem.

We later found out that VMs will not do the job, not to mention that the school might be strict on the legality of it since this is all happening in France, who knows!

So her only option is to buy a Mac, either used or new, but we're completely lost since I only ever use DAWS on Windows, we're not really iphone or Mac users.

Also, the principal let her know that they will be giving the students a copy of Logic Pro X, I told my sis to send an gmail asking about what version they will be working with, since after I did my research, I found out that certain Macs are obsolete, especially older generations ofc, something about Intel cpus not supporting logic ? IDK I HAVE NO IDEA I'm so lost!

What model should she buy, preferably used!

I know it's been 2 years, but I've missed the old Drummer so much!

I have a "vintage" 2019 Intel MacBook Pro, which I mistakenly updated to the new OS and Logic, when the new session players were introduced. The thing is, the new session players don't play well on my old Intel machine, never have - it's like the drummer is wasted... Even in a blank project with just 1 track, WiFi off, no other apps open. Beats are often skipped, with odd delays and misfires all the damn time. Push/pull and swing don't work smoothly either, nor the fills, and the presets are whack IMO. That and I hate the UI in comparison to the old Drummer

Today, I realised I also have an old ("antique"?) 2015 MacBook Pro from before I even started using Logic! I dug it out of the old tech drawer and managed to bring it back to life. It's only capable of running Monterey and Logic Pro 10.7.9, so I logged into the app store, downloaded Logic, renamed it and compressed the app file, stuck it on my external SSD, plugged it into my 2019 MacBook (Sequoia), unzipped it and pasted it into the apps folder - it works seamlessly! And it is running much faster than the newer version!

I know many of you gel with the new session player drummer, but I've spent 5 minutes with the old drummer and it's just perfect and life is better now I have it back.

Happy days. Thanks for reading.

Time compression

I know this is a Logic sub, but I need to speed up a non-sync voice track. For those of you who have used these programs, which gives the best quality results for a 5-10% speedup: Adobe Audition, DaVinci Resolve, or Logic?

Suggest me 1 analogue sounding 3rd party synth to complement my Logic stock synth?

Hey,

I have been using logic stock synths, ES2, Alchemy, Retro Synth and Sculpture mainly and especially Retro Synth. I would like to add at least 1 third party synth.

Can you suggest me 1 analogue-sounding 3rd-party synth to complement my Logic stock synth? I make electronic music. Must be similar to the simplicity and UI of Logics Retro Synth.
