2019 Peugeot 5008: Recurring front left clunking after driveshaft replacement. What would you check next?
2019 Peugeot 5008 1.5 BlueHDi, currently at about 140,000 km (87,000 miles).
About a year ago I developed a loud clunking/clicking noise from the front left side. A trustes mechanic diagnosed play in the left front driveshaft/CV assembly and replaced the complete left driveshaft.
The noise disappeared, but now, about 10 months later, what seems like the exact same issue has returned.
Current symptoms
- Noise appears on every drive.
- Loud irregular clunking/clicking from the front left area.
- Each clunk can be felt as a vibration through the steering wheel/column.
- Most noticeable at low speeds.
- Happens both under light acceleration and while coasting/rolling.
- Not related to bumps or rough roads.
- Not worse when turning.
- Turning the steering wheel while stationary does not reproduce the noise.
- Noise is not rhythmic and does not seem directly related to wheel speed.
Because the symptom feels almost identical to what I had before, I’m wondering whether:
- The replacement driveshaft could have failed already.
- The original diagnosis may have been incomplete or incorrect.
- There is another common component in the steering/suspension/hub area that can mimic a bad driveshaft.
If this came into your shop, what would be at the top of your diagnostic list?
Thanks.
