Maximising Japanese proficiency with 2 months in Japan - what would you do?

Hi All,

I am looking to spend 2 months in Japan from November to January with the main goal of improving Japanese proficiency. I will sprinkle some fun and domestic travel in too but the focus will be language. Currently about N4/N3 level. Would love to work towards N1 eventually.

How would you go about spending 2 months there with above goal? Would you enrol in an intensive school in a major city like Tokyo? Would you go to a regional or remote town and immerse yourself in the community that way? Or something else?

Keen to hear what people's opinions and insights are.

Thanks!

2001 Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarrier 1HZ with low mileage for $30K - thoughts on value?

Someone I know is selling an ex-government 2001 Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarrier 1HZ 11-seater with full service history, no known issues including no rust, 137000km's for $30K. I have always wanted a Troopy for exploring regional and remote Aus but haven't been able to afford it. I don't know much about cars but I am feeling inclined to buy this.

Do you think $30K for this seems like a good deal? Is there anything else I should look for or consider before buying it?

Thanks for your help.

Secrets or observations of high performers in medicine

I am nearing the end of medical school and still feel that my study regime and approach to medicine & surgery could improve. It is a humbling profession. But some individuals seem to thrive through clinical placement and junior doctor years.

Innate talent aside, do you notice any particular common themes (concerning study, behaviour, lifestyle etc.) amongst those that thrive in internship and residency and those that struggle?

And what would you focus on in your final 6 months prior to internship to maximise effectiveness as an Intern?

Recommendations for first 4x4 for NT on a budget

Hi guys,

Looking to buy a 4x4 to last me at least the next decade in the Northern Territory of Australia. Budget of approx $20K AUD at the moment but willing to spend a bit more if you think it is worthwhile.

I have seen a few old diesel manual Hilux's from ~1998-2004 with <100K km's and regular service history listed on marketplace for <$20K but these have sold rapidly. Really like the look of them and their reputation. Is it sensible to be patient and wait for another one of these to pop up, or can you suggest other vehicles that may fulfil my criteria? What would you personally look for and buy?

Thanks for your help!

Ortho unaccredited and accredited registrars - please provide your insights

Keen to hear from Aussie ortho registrars, both unaccredited and accredited. The Ausjdocs ortho podcast that was expected to drop months ago is still pending and there's little input in the archives from this demographic.

What ultimately compelled you to pursue ortho over everything else?

Does it require all of your daily attention and mental bandwidth to be 1) competitive enough to get on and 2) to keep up and feel competent once you're on the program. Or do you somehow manage to have some semblance of balance? If so, what do you make time for outside of ortho?

Would you do it all over again if you could turn back the clock?

For people considering it, what questions would you encourage oneself to ask to better determine their suitability for this lifestyle?

What are realistic income expectations as a busy unaccredited ortho reg through to AOA accredited trainee?

Thanks for your time!

GSSE carryover benefit?

Hi,

For those that have prepared and sat the GSSE, would you say there was any carry over benefit into your ability as a junior medical doctor? In terms of useful knowledge, clinical reasoning, practice? Or it felt solely for the purpose of passing GSSE in retrospect?

Additionally, as someone contemplating sitting the GSSE, can those that passed please provide their simplified approach? How many months of focussed preparation do you feel is necessary to go in with confidence? I have a vague idea regarding resources to use from reading historic posts in this group but haven't been able to actually find 'the bank' of interactive MCQs...

Thanks
