Any way to pickup/order dining hall food ahead of time?

Because of the course slots I got, for 2 days of the week I’m only gonna be free for Breakfast and Dinner (11:35 - 3:25 back to back, so ~6 hours w/o meals if I grab 5pm dinner).

Is there a service I can use to pick up food ahead of time or to somehow get dining hall meals out of regular hours?

I don’t want to splurge on buying food everyday for a semester if I can help it. I’m a first-year if that helps my case at all

Sight-reading Learning Tips for Audition (I'm terrified)

I'm so scared. I have auditions for my school A Capellas in a month and I found out they ask for a sight-reading demonstration.

I've always learned songs by ear, and if I get a starting note sometimes I can follow along with music very roughly, but I've never sight-read anything since I'm completely self-taught.

I know I'm likely just gonna have to study(?) / practice and work away at learning, but does anyone have tips that help with the learning process that might save me (or at least make things a little more efficient)?

I've also heard we'll have a "blending" section where I'll be singing my part within a quartet. I have no clue how to practice for this---is it just luck of the draw for if my voice is a good blend with the group?

Working and how it affects Financial Aid

I tried reaching out to my fin aid officer but I couldn’t get a clear answer, so I’m reaching out here.

If I get a job while studying, will it detract from my financial aid offer?

From what I understand, aid is need based, so if I work a job (on or off campus) it’ll add to the amount I can contribute and thus reduce my “need”

So if my aid is 50k and my expected student contribution is 2k and my actual income is, for instance, 5k, then my aid would be 47k? This is from subtracting the initial aid by the difference of expected and earned income.

I want to help my parents pay for tuition, but I’m worried that too large of an income, or an income in general might be a net 0 and have them paying the same or greater.

Does anyone have experience with this? Does too high a student income reduce financial aid?

Will I explode?

Micro 1115 ends 15 minutes before my Spanish class, but the walk is exactly 15 minutes and Spanish has a strict attendance policy.

If I take Micro 1110 in the Spring will I combust instantly and wish I had taken it lecture style with Cormac?

Alternatively I could schedule a 9:30 am Spanish, but I'm worried I might end up late anyway / won't be fully awake because of my sleep schedule. Was readjusting sleep difficult for you guys?

Where to find class locations?

I’m trying to make sure I have enough time between classes, but I can’t find info on many course locations for the coming semester. Are they listed somewhere?

I am terrified of Microeconomics.

I'm an incoming freshman with an FGLI, limited public school math background and pretty poor QR skills (not that I can't improve, this is just where I am), and I am TERRIFIED of the microeconomics classes here. I've been really nervous about being able to keep up, and feeling self-conscious of being so far behind my peers in even the intro level courses.

I was originally planning on 1108 / 1110 because I enjoy smaller, tight knit classes, but the professor evaluations have been scaring me. The curve is effectively harsher, material can be poorly organized, and there's less assistance without TAs / Discussion meetings.

But 1115 is a massive, fast paced class that seems to require a stronger grasp of math with so many advocating for it to be taken as a Credit/D/Fail.

I know I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet since economics is fundamental to my interests, but I'm nonetheless worried (especially since my calculus knowledge is limited to one Youtube video on derivatives).

Does anyone have advice on how I can prepare and adjust to college academics / what econ I should enroll in and how to study? Should I register for 1108/1110 and weigh against 1115 during add/drop?

How much time should I reserve for A Capella?

Finalizing my courses right now, and I want to make sure I don't have any bad overlaps with rehearsals / practices. Of course, there is always the chance of not getting tapped, but I'd like to be prepared for the time commitment.

Is there any information on when rehearsals are (day/time)?

Are the beginner / no experience Acting and Musical Theatre groups on campus?

I'm a freshman this fall, and I was looking to join a fun little production / club if possible. I don't have any acting or performing experience other than singing for my friends sometimes, but I've really enjoyed watching and helping out at high-school and local performances and thought it'd be fun to see how much work is put in firsthand.

Are there any clubs / groups I should look out for (at the EC Bazaar perhaps)?

How to pick between majors? (Cog Sci vs Psych and Econ vs CS+Psych vs CS+Econ)

I’m an incoming freshman and I’m having trouble deciding between these majors (Cognitive Science, Psych and Econ, CS+Psych or CS+Econ Joint Major). Majors aren’t declared till Sophomore year so I have a some time, but I’m worried about my prerequisites as well, since they'd be different depending on what I want to declare.

For reference, I’m primarily interested in behavioral economics, marketing, and story (What makes a good story, how attention is captured, story anthropology, theatrical story, etc).

I didn’t have the chance to study these courses in depth during high-school so I’m a little lost on which direction to head. All my (limited) knowledge on these topics is mostly self taught.

I think Cog Sci would allow me the most course flexibility, but I’m worried about career stability as I don’t plan on immediate post education. Does anyone have perspectives on this?

What components are on the Spanish Placement Exam?

I'm taking the makeup placement test, and I was wondering what I'd be tested over---less so for studying and moreso to just be mentally prepared.

I've heard there's only a comprehension/grammar section and a writing section. Should I not be anticipating a listening or speaking portion?

Why am I off pitch when I sing with music or backing tracks?

I’ve noticed that I can sing pretty well / on pitch and with confidence when I’m singing by myself, kind of like a cappella style. When I sing with a backing track / karaoke however, I notice myself messing up notes a lot more or missing beats.

This doesn’t happen when I’m just harmonizing to a song, or when I’m singing while playing piano.

It could be that I don’t have the pace of the songs down, or that my sense of rhythm is off?

Does anyone have any idea of why this is, or exercises to fix it?

How do I plan my schedule if I’m undecided?

I also want to preface I’ve been gone most of the summer, and I ended up missing my placement exams… I emailed the respective departments and it seems like I can take some makeups, although I’m not sure how that’ll work.

All the classes here seem so incredibly interesting, and I have no clue how to plan my schedule.

I’m leaning towards either CS+Psych or CS+Econ, but I’m also interested in Anthro, Socio, Humanities, and Film (more as topics than majors though).

I was thinking about a schedule along the lines of

MATH 1100+1110 or 1120 (depending on placement)
ECON 1110 or 1115
CPSC 2010
PSYC 1100

I wanted to take a Six Global Perspectives course and a language, but I wasn’t sure if I should swap something out or keep them for next semester.

Admittedly, I’m undecided about which language to pursue, I’ve heard scary things about them all, so I was just gonna continue my high school studies in Spanish since I feel like Id learn the most through continuing.

Does anyone have advice on scheduling when you aren’t confirmed on your major?

Games / Challenges for programmers?

Hi guys! I’m looking for a game where macroing / automating is either encouraged or wouldn’t hurt the player base.

It’s a weird request, but I’ve been seeing videos of people making their own programs to automate parts of mmos for fun and I wanted to try it out.

Obviously, I don’t really want to harm games and their economies, so I was wondering if there were any games where scripting isn’t disallowed or potentially for game challenges (game jams?) where it’s encouraged.

Calisthenics / Outdoor Workout Areas?

Incoming ‘30 who enjoys working out outside. Are there any places nearby (walking) or on campus that have calisthenics bars or space to set up gymnastics rings?

I have no idea what I want to major in. I’ve got such a broad range of interests, but I also feel I have a great deal of weaknesses and certain priorities to consider as well. I’m an incoming Freshman btw.

Obviously going to Yale gives me some more liberty in the subjects I can study while still being well off career wise, but I don’t actually know how to pick or what to choose. I want to love my career, but also not have to think about money. I’m first gen, so money has always been a struggle and I want to end that worry for our family / my future family.

I’m not the best at STEM, but I could definitely work hard at studying—I just don’t know if I’d match the passion or the discrete-math-in-highschool level of my peers.

I think English/The Humanities is(are) pretty cool and I’ve been told I’m good at writing (and thinking??). I wouldn’t want to go to Law School though.

I get passionate about things really easily, especially music and performance (enjoy it, not good at it). I think I’d like a career where I wouldn’t have to put up a front all day—I’ve heard high finance and IB careers are pretty pretentious—something that I could invest myself in and get super excited about as I try to grow it.

I like researching the best ways to do things and planning them out (#sciencebasedlifter). I don’t know if I could work a dull desk job. I love being passionate and creating opportunities and being energetic. I’m kind of introverted though so I lose energy quickly, but I’m not shy really.

Anyways, I’m just a really confused highschooler who has no clue what to do or how to use my Yale education for my goals (career fulfillment and “financial freedom”)

Don’t know if I worded this right, but I’d love to know what kind of interesting jobs people are successfully working in after graduation (monetary success or otherwise)

I know being at Yale provides amazing opportunities, and as a prefrosh I’m still (understandably) not fully sure what kind of work I want to be doing.

I’ve grown up around the idea of tech jobs my whole life, so I don’t have a great perspective on what people are actually fulfilling and sustaining themselves with.

I think designing systems and optimizing markets is kinda cool! (Systems Engineering, Consulting, Marketing, ???, something fun!)

Money is a factor ofc (first-gen trying to escape and help my parents), but I’m also just curious and want to be fulfilled in my career
