Is it unusual or acceptable business practice for a mortgage servicer to reorder payment transactions? Every month I notice that my pre-pay to principal transactions for the first few days of the month get reordered to be after my monthly payment (paid on time, every time, on the first of the month). This ends up costing me about a penny a month that should be going to principle ending up as interest instead. It's not a lot, but overtime it's dollars I'd rather did what they ought to do. I could skip those first couple of calendar days but why should I have to?
Kind of reminds me a little of a couple years back when Bank of America was reordering transactions to bounce checks to incur penalty fees. It's only a penny a month for me because I don't put much extra to principle only those first days of the month. But if I did, it'd definitely cost more, and why should it?
As it says on tin. At what point would you rather pre-pay down a mortgage or invest? What APR? Does it matter to your calculation how much in investment you already have?

One of the big things that seems to be a holdup for emotional comfort with actually walking away from your job to FIRE (especially younger than 50), even when on paper you're ready, is the lack of "guaranteed" income. Not that the job was ever guaranteed, but still, it is emotionally hard to walk away from that steady cash flow.
With social security being so many years away (if ever) and no pensions, is having some other form of steady cash flow that important, mathematically and psychologically?
Some folks look to the dividends part of their portfolio to fill that gap, some go into real estate for the rental income. Does anyone bother with annuities? Or any other form of regular, expected ordinary income?
Planning to FIRE at 40, less than 5 years to go. USA. Any recommendations?

I always hear of folks regretting not putting more of their cash position in investments over time. I don't know that I've ever heard the opposite. Well folks? Anyone ever wake up one day going "gosh darn it I should have kept more in cash"? Maybe it's an artifact of time and place and folks with longer memories or broader experiences have?
