Abolition of the Slave Trade

While I agree with much of what they were saying on the Star Spangled Banner episode re the hypocrisy of the “land of the free,” I think too much was made of Britain’s abolition of the slave trade.

First, it seems highly unlikely that slaves would be aware of this development, and there is a massive difference between abolishing the slave trade and slavery itself.

Secondly, and I think most importantly, the United States had already abolished the importing of slaves by the war of 1812.

It seems to me that the British were cleverly taking advantage of a weakness in the US’s potential for a slave revolt, and enslaved people made the obvious self-interested choice, but Britain’s position was hardly more enlightened as they seem to suggest.
