How do you handle the hereditary magic?

As a writer and a reader I am not opposed to hereditary magic if the book is written well. Although sometimes when an undeserving character is given immense power without earning it can feel kind of frustrating and unfair. But then again that could always make the book better if written well. On the other hand when a characters have to work hard to earn their magic and abilities it feels much more rewarding. Which do you prefer to write? Hereditary manic or earned abilities? I don’t really understand why some people are so opposed to hereditary power. Although I do understand why someone might prefer earned magic.

Opinions on my Characters names

I am in the planning stages of my first ever novel. I don’t know if I will ever publish it but I am considering names for a couple of my characters. The lead protagonist of my fantasy romance book will likely be named Valerie/ Val unless I am convinced otherwise. My protagonist is going to be a strong resilient female. For her “sister” (found family) I was thinking of the name Luli/ Lu. I think it would suit a sweet, protective older sister.

I also have a few side character names that I have been storing in the back of my mind for when I need them. I was thinking Jewels/ J or Esther were good names to consider for future characters. I have not thought of any possible names for my male characters yet other than Felix but would appreciate ideas. I also like the name Fallon. Opinions on my characters names are much appreciated!
