What is aipan art ?

Aipan is a 2,000+ year old folk art from the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India.
White geometric patterns are drawn using rice paste (Biswar) on a red ochre (Geru) background — traditionally by women on floors, walls, and temple courtyards during festivals and rituals.
Each design carries spiritual meaning — the 8-petaled lotus, Lakshmi’s footprints, Swastik — believed to invite divine blessings into the home.
What makes it truly special: it was never taught in schools. Mothers passed it to daughters, finger by finger, for generations.
Got a GI Tag from the Indian government in 2021. Now slowly finding its way into modern home décor and handcrafted products worldwide.
One of those quietly disappearing art forms that deserves way more attention. 🙏
