Advice for how I can be safer when walking alone?
ugh god. today when walking and taking the bus I got harassed by multiple men and I’m sick of it!!!!
the first man was the one who scared me the most so I’ll center my question around that experience and what I can do in the future to be better about being safe. basically what happened was:
I was walking to the bus stop. I see there’s a man walking in the same direction a few paces ahead of me. he suddenly turns around, looks at me, smiles, and then keeps going. he does that again. then he fully stops and waits for me to get closer.
- first question before I keep going: should I have turned around? I regret walking past him. would turning around have made him chase me? get angry? is it worse to keep going or to turn around?
continuing with the story: as I approach he starts ranting to me about some coffee shop and how I should never go there and that I need to make sure no one else ever does either. He was trying to keep pace with me so I sped up and just said, “thank you. Good to know.“ to be polite. I could sense he wasn’t the most stable so I didn’t want to trigger him to be angry. He didn’t seem happy with that response anyway either so whatever. nothing I do is ever enough to placate these creeps.
i pass him fully but could hear him walking closely behind me and muttering about something. I knew I had to get away ASAP!! Sadly my bus stop was right there but I decided my safety was more important than missing the bus. So I turned left and went a different direction. Immediately after I turned he started yelling angrily and loudly, saying things like “pussy ass bitch” and stuff.
- my mistake here was that I turned down a neighborhood street cause I was just trying to flee. I should’ve turned towards the businesses nearby. I’ll do that next time
the crazy thing is he was assuming I did that to get away from him (he’s right and his reaction showed me it was def the right choice). But like I might’ve genuinely needed to turn that direction? He’s unstable I know and probably would’ve gotten angry about anything I did but still.
so what could I have done better to be safer? And any tips to stay safe as a woman when walking alone?
