We need to stop calling everything a breakout

Every preseason we see lots of posts about sleepers however, a lot of the names dropped are players that already broke out and about to take a leap into stardom.

There is a fine line between a breakout and a sleeper but the way I see it is that a breakout is a player that has never been that good and suddenly is whilst a sleeper is a player that is available later in drafts than he should be.

A bounce back is a player who has already produced at a level and then lost it, belief is lost, his ADP drops and returns to past production.

Every season we have newcomers to fantasy NBA and these things can be confusing to them so I thought I’d explain it.

Seasoned fantasy managers can drop there favourite, sleeper, breakout or leap player and help the rookie managers out.

I’ve been analysing fantasy NBA since 1999 and I called some player’s recently a breakout and whilst I meant take a leap this season, those that are experienced would of understood that however, newcomers might not.

How do you all see it?

Is Haliburton worth it at his current ADP?

Fantrax ADP just went live and Haliburton is sitting at 11.67, so top 12, first round in a 12 team league. ESPN and Yahoo haven’t put out 2026-27 numbers yet so Fantrax is all we’ve got to go on.

Who he’s going around:

**10.**	Giannis 10.13
**11.**	Barnes 10.98
**12.**	Haliburton 11.67
**13.**	Flagg 12.90
**14.**	Mitchell 13.67

The argument for him is pretty simple. It’s his team, Turner is gone, and the last time we saw him play he was doing 18.6/3.5/9.2 with 1.4 steals and made All NBA Third Team. Word out of Indiana is they’re optimistic he suits up opening night.

The argument against is that he tore his Achilles in Game 7 of the 2025 Finals and hasn’t played since. He also got shingles in February which cost him conditioning. Achilles guys don’t usually just pick up where they left off either. Minutes caps, load management, slow first couple of months, all on the table. And Zubac being in the frontcourt now changes what his pick and roll looks like.

So is the first round actually the right price for someone with no games in 18 months, or do you let somebody else take that on? Where do you draw the line, early second, third?

Interested to hear what 12 team cat league people are doing with him compared to points leagues.

With Summer League finished, who were your standout rookies?

Now that Summer League is done, who came away looking the best to you?

Not just the guys who filled up the stat sheet, but the players who changed your opinion going into the season. Could be a lottery pick, a late pick, or someone you didn’t expect much from.

For me it was guys like Caleb Wilson, Yaxel Lendeborg, Cameron Boozer and Cedric Coward which really isn’t a surprise.

Keen to see who everyone else was highest on.

Who do you think is a bust this season in fantasy?

Who’s the guy you’re avoiding this year?

Not talking about someone everyone already expects to disappoint. I mean a player being drafted way too early compared to where you think they’ll actually finish.

Who’s your biggest bust candidate, and why? I’m interested to see if there’s any names people keep coming back to.

Who’s the one non-obvious fantasy player you think is about to make a massive leap?

Not talking about the obvious breakout guys everyone already knows about.

Who’s someone flying under the radar that you think is about to take a big jump this season?

Could be because of a new role, more minutes, a coaching change, or just a gut feeling.

Curious to hear everyone’s picks and why.

Does Lendeborg win the starting gig at GSW?

so apparently Kerr told Lendeborg he “might start” this year lol, which is wild bc Kerr basically never starts rookies. but with LeBron picking Philly instead of GSW and Jimmy Butler out for a while, that wing spot next to Draymond is just… open right now

and he did not look out of place in Vegas either. Summer League MVP, averaged like 14.8/6.8/4.0 over 6 games and led them to the title. 6’9, can actually pass, feels like exactly the kind of connector guy the Dubs haven’t really had since 2022

counter argument is that Kerr’s hyped up rookies before and then just… not played them, and Horford/Podz/Melton/Santos all need run too. but also Lendeborg’s already 23, dude played 5 years of college ball, he’s basically not a normal rookie

anyway where’s everyone at — starter week 1 or does he have to earn it first

Diabaté vs. Kalkbrenner - who’s the better long-term fantasy bet at center for Charlotte?

Diabaté had a career year and just got his 2026-27 salary guaranteed, but he’s undersized for the 5. Kalkbrenner has the real center size/rim protection and opened last year as the starter before injury cost him the job — competition’s reportedly still open. Naz Reid now adds to the crowd too.

I think Diabaté keeps the starting gig this year, but long-term I’m not sold he’s the answer at true center. Thoughts?

How does the LeBron move to Philly affect the fantasy outlook for the incumbent stars?

My early take:

Embiid: Slight scoring dip, but better efficiency and potentially more games played if LeBron takes some of the creation load. Could actually be a net positive.

Maxey: Probably takes the biggest usage hit, but should get easier looks and more efficient scoring.

Jaylen Brown: Similar story. Fewer shots, but better quality shots and less defensive attention.

LeBron: Assist numbers could stay elite, but at 41 I’d expect minutes management and occasional rest.

Edgecombe: Biggest concern is touches. His long-term upside is still there, but with LeBron, Embiid, Maxey and Brown ahead of him, it’s hard to see consistent fantasy value outside of deeper leagues unless injuries open up a bigger role.

Is Embiid washed or can he bounce back?

Everyone seems out on Embiid.

Is that a mistake?

If he’s healthy, does he remind everyone why he’s one of the most dominant fantasy players in the league.

How does the recent LeBron James move impact?

What am I missing?

Is boozer the day one alpha in memphis and if so what does that actually look like?

Yes. morant, aldama, jjj, bane are all gone, boozer walked into a completely empty slate

Projected starters: jerome, coward, wells, boozer, edey. grant is the 6th man out of the trade return, stewart and pippen round out the rotation

He’s the clear number one option, edey handles the rim protection so boozer doesnt have to be that guy, and nobody else in that starting five needs the ball the way he does. summer league has him around 16.5 points, 5.5 boards, 4 assists without even being featured heavily yet

Expect heavy usage day one, real counting stats, some rookie inefficiency early, but a legit path to rookie of the year buzz

Alex’s call: he is my number one rookie pick, no debate

Is Portland a fantasy team to avoid until the roster settles? Who actually starts in the backcourt on Opening Night?

Portland’s roster has me scratching my head.
You’ve got Dame, Ja, Scoot, Sharpe and Jrue all competing for minutes.

Who do you think starts on Opening Night?

More importantly, is Portland a team you’re avoiding in fantasy drafts until another trade happens, or are you buying into the uncertainty and taking the value?

Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Which center are you not sleeping on despite the chaos?

so many bigs changed situations this offseason that most projections floating around right now dont mean much anymore

but there’s usually one or two guys who separate from the noise even when rotations are unsettled

who’s your center pick that you’re locking in no matter how the depth charts shake out

LaMelo Ball to Minnesota: Will He Be Better or Worse for Fantasy and What Round Should You Take Him?

LaMelo’s running alongside Anthony Edwards now — better situation, better fantasy outlook.

Edwards draws the defensive pressure, giving Melo cleaner looks across the board. The 20 points, 7 assists, steals and threes profile stays intact. Scoring dips slightly, playmaking role is still his.

Only real concern is health — two seasons over 70 games in six years. That’s the risk.

Third round. Better team, better weapons. If he’s there late second, pull the trigger.

Who’s your surprise rookie for this season? The guy nobody expected to do much but ends up being fantasy relevant.

Every draft has a rookie that comes out of nowhere.

Not the obvious top picks, but someone who wasn’t expected to have much of a role and ends up forcing their way into minutes or becoming fantasy relevant.

Who’s your pick this year, and why?

Could be because of opportunity, talent, injuries ahead of them, or simply a better NBA fit than people expected.

I’m looking for the names most people aren’t talking about yet.

High risk, high return: who’s your one swing-for-the-fences pick this year?

forget the safe floor guys.

forget the “value pick” talk.

every draft has that one name — boom or bust, no in between. either he wins you the league outright or he sinks the whole roster.

who’s the high risk, high return guy you’re drafting anyway this year?

If your draft was today, who’s the one player you’d leave with in every league?

forget rankings.

forget ADP.

who’s the player you’re making sure ends up on your roster everywhere?

Who’s the breakout everyone’s gonna draft 3 rounds too late next year

every draft season there’s a guy who goes round 8 and finishes round 2. who’s that for you in 2026-27?

usually it’s a young guy who got buried on a bad roster or limited minutes last year and is about to get a real role, or someone coming off an injury that masked a real leap

who are you stashing/targeting before everyone else catches on

Hype vs Reality - which players hype doesn’t match the reality, drop your list.

every offseason theres a few guys ppl talk about like locks just bc of name value, one big run, or pure status — the “man crush” picks ppl reach for regardless of what the numbers actually say.

who do you think the fantasy community has completely wrong rn, for better or worse?
