PSA: turning off HDR output in the system settings helps with the frame rate drops quite a bit. But the music, vibes, and views make me forgive all the performance issues. Do I wish they weren’t there? Sure. But would I rather deal with them than not have the game at all? Most definitely.

Something about Oblivion always resonated with me, all the way back when I first played on PS3. Skyrim was fantastic, but I can’t help but feel that Oblivion was just the right scale to keep me engrossed. I’ve tried replaying Skyrim multiple times, and the long treks just wear me down. I feel Oblivion struck just the right chord of conveniently sized while still having a sense of epic scale. I love that the tower is the centerpiece that everything revolves around, and all the views you can get of it always get me to pause and take it in.

The eternally recognizable voices and quests are reborn like I’m living a daydream I’ve been having for the last 20 years. Everything is so familiar yet enhanced just enough to make it all exciting and new again, but with this feeling of returning to a favorite country I visited long ago.

But the thing that this Remaster really does absolutely fantastically is the night sky. Good lord. I’m mesmerized by the ‘milky way’ of stars, and absolutely love the two moons. This game really comes to life for me at night, so much so that I prefer wandering the towns and wilderness during the night. I truly feel born under the sign of the thief in this game. Utterly wonderful stuff.

I played Oblivion first back in college, and I play it now as a parent, and the portability is exactly what I needed. The fact that it looks as pretty as it does is just an added perk. Of course people hate that it doesn’t perform well, but one must wonder if it’s a game that is even capable of performing well, since it’s built upon a core that was pushing the boundaries back when it was created. I can imagine this thing is held together by spit and bubblegum. Would it be great if they rebuilt it from the ground up? Yes. But would it still have that unmistakeable charm? I kinda doubt it.

I’m absolutely loving my revisit to Cyrodiil. This game is exactly what I needed it to be. Sorry to those who can’t enjoy it, or refuse to support it. I suppose I’m grateful that it was made for me, someone who always wanted to revisit, but knew the PS3 disc wouldn’t hold up…and someone who adores the stars.

This is the first I’m realizing the Great Fox command bridge is down here?!

So what happens up in the ‘cockpit’? Man what I would do for a fully realized and modeled Great Fox interior. Like, where is that infinitely long hallway they always used to run down?

Portal Companion Collection is on sale for $4.99 right now. Get it if you don’t have it.

Seriously, if you haven’t played these games yet, now is the time. I just replayed them both in the last two days. They’re utter masterpieces. Nothing can touch them. People will be like: ‘what can I play that’s like Portal?’ And there is nothing. They are so crazy unique, and then absolutely nail the execution.

Portal one is a brilliant puzzle game with clever writing that established one of the greatest characters in video gaming. It’s a delight to play through with its beautifully simple concept that is masterfully presented. The game just WORKS, and it’s so satisfying.

Then, when you finish that, you can dip right in to Portal 2, which took the gold mine that was the Portal concept, turns it up to like 1000, and just smashes in to video gaming hall of fame with an absolutely flawless piece of interactive entertainment. The writing and voice acting is movie quality, and it’s just so thoroughly written and designed, you won’t believe that this game exists, even if you’ve played it before. It is airtight gameplay with delightfully charming characters guiding you throughout 3 acts that just seem to one up each other. I can’t spoil anything, but it’s one of the greatest stories to come out of this medium, and the fact that it’s paired with a concept that is wholly exclusive to the experience of video games is just out of this world. This is the kind of thing you play video games for. You try to explain this sort of thing to someone not familiar with video games, and people can barely wrap their heads around it, yet it’s so easy to grasp and explore once you start playing. Great stuff.

Yeah they’re short, and yeah you’re going to want to play more and more of them, but Portal 2 is truly a mic drop moment in game development, it’s everything and no more. So just play it now. Replay it too.

It’s a lot of fun to play handheld on the Switch 2, though perhaps more loading screens than I would like. Other than that, these games should be on every Switch 1 or Switch 2 in existence at this price.

Thank me later, I guess.

Having the time of my life

I’ve clocked a lot of hours in this game already, and it’s just utter bliss. The Switch 2 is just rocking my world. It feels like a reward for being a Nintendo fan for 30 years now. Everything they are doing is hitting just right for me.

Star Fox 2026 is a daydream come true. I had settled with the idea that Nintendo games were always going to impress with gameplay first and foremost, it was a fantasy that they could look fantastic as well. But here we are. What a visual feast. The way Star Fox is supposed to look. I’m glad I’ve been around long enough to appreciate how far we’ve come. So great hanging out with my space friends again.

And if the reborn campaign wasn’t enough, the multiplayer has consumed me. I’m having an absolute blast with the 3 modes, and just constant dog fights with REAL people, online. I mean. This is peak stuff. Star Fox dog fights online?! There’s nothing better than getting in to a competition of who can better optimize their g-diffuser as you spiral through the sky, braking, boosting, and somersaulting to see who can gain the advantage. I’m loving it.

I’ve got no problems with what Nintendo is doing these days. I’m having the time of my life. I can’t wait for what’s next…which is apparently an Ocarina of Time remake?! Good lord, these are good times.

Hope you all are having just as much fun!

Just a friendly reminder…

These bad boys are currently in stock…can’t help but feel this will be the definitive way to play in June. Not to mention if you’re going to be revisiting SF64 in the next month, this controller really is a great pairing with NSO.
