Purple Vermont slate touch up on Friodur 72

Purple Vermont slate touch up on Friodur 72

Thought it could use a touch up and I got a new stone so…
It’s a pretty hard stone and I spent some time on it finishing with a little soapy water.
Very smooth shave, no irritation against the grain but not as sharp a I like. I like that hard Arkansas edge that’s so sharp there’s no need to go against the grain. If you like a smooth three pass shave this is a good finisher and pretty too.

This is my biggest razor so far. How do you go back to using smaller razors?

Couple new to me stones. Big colorful washita in a pretty box and a tiny blue black mounted

10x2 1/2x 1 on the washita and 3 1/2x3/4x1/2 on the black

Test shave with the 72 1/2 honed on Deerlick and Vermont slate. Really nice. This razor took a bit of work but so worth it.

Mohawk pure badger fan is a lather monster.

Boker The Celebrated Ebony 15/16 and an old drugstore brush. This arrived yesterday from Martin’s Razors.

Ed put a wicked edge on it. The ebony is really nice too.

The Celebrated Hollow Ground Razor just received this beauty from Martin’s Razors

I have not found anything on this razor on the internet. Any Boker experts have knowledge of this beast? Can’t wait to take it for a spin in the morning. The 040 on the shank is intriguing.

More family photos. Dan’s whetstone and Hall’s ProEdge

That big black and white is one hell of a razor finisher. The Hall’s hard is my favorite midrange polisher.

American natural honing. Deerlick oilstone and Vermont mottled gray slate with water!

Old dog new trick day. Having failed to achieve the edge I wanted with my usual Arkansas progression I tried something different. Thanks for all the tips, Sophie. The Deerlick really is better with water.

Henckels Friodur 17 1/2 one of the closest smoothest shaves of my life.

She ain’t the prettiest girl at the dance but I took a chance on her. Like I always say sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good.

Family photos of all my currently held Smith’s Arkansas stones.

The third picture all have translucency to some extent, even the little washitas.
How about that solid heartwood pedestal?
This is not all my arks, just one brand that I like.

Just finished setting the bevel on a couple eBay Friodurs. The 17 1/2 is wonky. Someone tried to correct it on a course stone and made a mess of it. The 72 1/2 had been used to open boxes. The blade was covered in tape residue and the toe was like a bread knife. My forearms are kinda patchy.

The tools are 1x6 medium india, fine india (big red brick of joy), and a couple washitas

Mail call! A beautiful big heavy old white hard Arkansas that smells like Hoppes gun, oil in the fanciest Smith’s box I have ever seen.

Non Arkansas ANAT razor honing

Deerlick Oilstone cuts faster than washita and finishes close to the same. It self slurries and the feedback is excellent. The Hindostan is real nice in the middle. I get it now.
Finished on a mottled gray Vermont slate. Very hard but satisfying feedback. Totally different sound and feel than hard Arkansas but finished just like a translucent.
Hit the leather and it silently cuts hair all over the edge. Tomorrow’s shave will tell the tale.

I used oil on all stones because I’m a real American. Of course some soldiers showed up to make sure I’m not using sanctioned oil.
