Desensitization

I have a dog that does not need regular grooming (at least not by a professional), however I do want to desensitize him to being at the groomer away from me in the case that I would like to send him somewhere. He does great with me but I want to get him used to other environments with other dogs in which I am not around.

I also eventually want to see if he can tolerate a creative groom in the future.

Is there a way I can take him to the groomers without getting him groomed? Like just the groomers playing with him, placing him on the table and bath, messing with his paws, the sound of the clippers and other things that they do for puppies

Or should I just book a normal grooming session?
He is a show dog so I don’t necessarily want anyone to take scissors to him unless they know the breed, but I wouldn’t mind them giving him a bath or a nail trim.

He is 1.5 years old and has only been to the groomer once for a nail trim. They said he did great and that inspired me to learn how to do them myself so I haven’t brought him back.

He gets bathed and nails trimmed almost weekly. He doesn’t get brushed much unless he’s shedding a lot. (And then usually I just give him a bath to get everything off)

Dog facts:
Basenji
Intact male
1.5 years old
Bathed~weekly (using blueberry facial and GWTD cucumber)
Nails~weekly (grinder)
Stays still well enough for me to scissor his tail for show.

Dinosawr Awrawr

Updated collection! (I think it’s complete for now)

I tried to put them in movie order as best I could. (Let me know if i missed something tho!)

Dunno what I’m gonna do when the jeep comes out XD. It might stay in the box with the people.

I know fishing line would look better for the flying ones but I don’t wanna go up there again.

Training for the judge

Still doesn’t know how to get on the box by himself but he freestacks very nicely everywhere but my house.

In this session I touch him all over (much more than a judge should do) so he gets used to it while standing. He tends to want to sit on the table during his inspection.

Ah yes… the cleanliest breed

Maybe not basenji quirks, but my basenji has quirks

We were indeed locked outside until he was bathed. 🧼

My crazy water loving child. He got dirt everywhere.

When I don’t ask, VS when I do.

He’s gotta think about it when I don’t have an offering to give 😆

His slow deaths always crack me up

Embark Results!

Thought I might share! I knew he was purebred but it’s still cool to see all the results. He is a little more inbred than most basenjis 😆

I purchased the purebred test. I was told embark isn’t the best for this breed after purchasing, but I’ll look into getting Orivet for next time!

I also do plan to get OFAs done as well (once he turns 2) This is just the genetic stuff.

I have a basenji pup. He is currently 16 months and very well behaved/trained (for his age and breed).

When I was potty training him, (under 6 months) he would pee immediately after drinking water with no hesitation.

I asked so many people including the vet and they didn’t have any way to explain why. I tried to give him less water, I tried to let him out more often, I got him tested for fanconi, I didn’t know why it was happening. He did seem to know he was supposed to hold his bladder any other time and would alert me (via bell) to when he needed to be let out.

I eventually corrected it by only giving him water outside for a couple months. Eventually he was able to drink without peeing.

I still don’t know why he did this. Puppies are weird.

I would say he was fully potty trained at 6 months old due to this behavior. (Now he goes pee on command). Basenjis are supposed to be easy to potty train 😂
