In the last essay he wrote before his tragic suicide while trying to escape from the Nazis, German-Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin analogized historical materialism (the Marxist philosophy of history) to the 18th century chess playing "automaton", which was really a man in a cabinet controlling a puppet.

I made this as a tribute to one of my favourite writers and his most challenging work.
