"Pistol" has finally been unthroned!

"Song About Nothing" is now the worst song Modest Mouse has ever released. Eclipsing the previous position that Pistol held for 11 years.

Congratulations "Song About Nothing".

Does anyone else feel sick to their stomache about the Island Airport expansion?

Like it feels.... Helpless.

Like if the federal Liberals were going to shut down this insane, ridiculous, unnecessary idea they would have instantly or would have told Ford it was going to be a no-go they would have done so privately to prevent that bill taking control of the airport and expropriating the islands before things got this far.

So it feels like... It's a done deal. This "consultation" process is all smoke and mirrors politician bullshit. They want to do the jets, the want the giant fake runway and it likely will mean taking over the ENTIRE islands for security reasons or whatever.

Just the very notion that the waterfront won't be the waterfront and it will be some huge airport district and that we won't have access to the islands anymore. I live near Ontario Place and that place has been fenced up now for years and I remember when it was open and people could walk around it and enjoy it. The idea that next summer the islands might be shut down to the public and become some huge construction zone and that's the end of it. The feds will sign off and suddenly Toronto doesn't have that anymore all in the name of "convenience".

I'm losing my mind. I like to think I'm a pretty chill and rational person but as I sit right now on my patio 800 meters from the water taxi that I take to the islands about 20 times a year the idea that soon I won't be able to go there is just an unbelievably horrific thought. Those moments on the beaches on the island just sitting at enjoying some peace and nature in this gigantic loud chaotic city I've called my home for 40 years and it feels like that won't be an option soon. Ford and Carney will talk Yo how we already have High Park and Rouge Valley and "Toronto has plenty of green spaces" and basically tough shit. I live literally so close to the island airport that I'll probably have to move. Like... Beyond writing letters to every possible politician and getting more assertive in that process with all that what in the fuck am I supposed to do about this. It will have a huge effect on my life. I live less than a KM from the current runway. The airport is perfect in its current state, I have zero issue with it. It exists in such perfect harmony with the city and the neighborhood. It feels like this is the final nail in the coffin for the I grew up in Toronto.

Edit. To add to the helplessness the mods of this sub now don't want us discussing this issue evidently.

Why did the larger music festivals from the mid 00's through mid 10's die out in Toronto?

I've noticed in the post covid era Toronto really doesn't have barely any music festivals anymore.

I guess Veld is the viable large one that follows the three day model and is general admission.

Electric Island exists but that isn't quite what I'm thinking of.

For those old enough to remember Toronto used to have LOTS of music festivals in the 2000s and the 2010s.

There was Riot Fest at Downsview Park (now Rogers Stadium) with all sorts of rock and punk acts mainly. There was "Heavy TO", big metal festival also at Downsview. We had a couple of incarnations of Virgin Festival which is big UK fest brand. They even had one year on the islands. In the summers you would get pretty big shows on the island. Like 10-15k capacity with Bjork, Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire. Pavement. Olympic Island concerts were common. Then whay largely replaced that was Field Trip Festival at Fort York which ran for like 5 years and was seemingly quite successful. Then we had Digital Dreams at the peak of EDM's popularity. It's was at Ontario Place and was pretty huge like 30k capacity. Then that died out and Veld large replaced it. Then we had Bestival which was a UK fest and they tried a Toronto version on the islands and it was brilliant. The next year they scaled down a bit to Woodbine Park and it was still fun. There was the TURF Toronto Urban Music Festival at Fort York. Lots of "time" one off fests at Fort York also.

Either way, as time took one.... All these have disappeared. And it seems promoters and artists and booking agents all feel it's impossible to pull one of these off ahain. Anyone withing the concert live music booking agency oh what is RALLY behind this? We're many seemingly successful festivals losing money behind the scenes? Are we not getting enough foreign capital and hackers. Ie. The Riot fest, Bestival, v fest model. Are wages just too high? Is overhead too expensive? Are the city worst with issuing permits?

Is anyone at Nathan Phillips today?

Heading to that free BSS/Feist concert. Curious if it's busy. I haven't seen much buzz online about the concert so wondering if it will be packed.
