The Fuji F30 - Five 2007 Portraits

The F30 rocked 20 years ago, and the legend continues today. Here are some portraits from Bonnaroo. A true early century digital workhorse in an era where it blew away any cell phone camera.

The Great Dust Storm of 2007

It was hot, it was dusty, the music was good, and those sapphire Uncle Syd gels were everywhere. The air was full of constant sneezing, strong body funk, sweaty porta-potty ass, and the steamy insides of coolers with food that had gone bad while the owners partied and forgot ice. Great early 2000's buds mixed with the piney funk of seedy brick herb helped to fuel the party, and campground stumblers weren't uncommon at any hour of the day or night. Old stale and spilled beer complimented smoke and cigarette butts for ambiance.

People were miserable, drowning in their own sweat - only to have the dust settle in and make mud on their pale "I had no idea it would get this hot!" skin. People were sloppy early century drunk, and surviving on good times during the day, only to surge out at night into the humidity for another round. An incredible lineup was pumped at all hours. By the end of the fun, the humidity had broken, and all that was left was barren ground, a giant dust cloud, and 4 days of classic reverb that you couldn't forget if your ears wanted to.

The photos are taken with the Fuji F30, which had been released in 2006.

I love BHO - and I'm not ashamed to say it.

Is there anything wrong with good bulk jars of caregiver grade BHO? I love em! There are tons of cheap live resin ounces floating around now, and much of it is solid. I am really wondering what is the main complaint when it comes to solid "clean" BHO? It gets me blasted and has nearly eliminated my flower habit. Am I living in 2015?

Looking For a Good Realtor - experience in rural properties.

We are strongly considering selling our home just outside of GR, located in a rural neighborhood. We need to meet with a good realtor and pick someone with the experience, honesty, and integrity we need.

Who knows a quality realtor, experienced in the sale of rural homes and good land? PM me if it works better!

Ann Arbor residents not part of U of M?

My partner and I are current residents of a conservative Grand Rapids suburb. We love our land, but the politics and our desire for a smaller house has us ready for a more liberal vibe and place. We make good money, work from home, but we are not affiliated with the University. We do love college towns however, and have enjoyed both Eugene (OR) and Mizzou (Columbia, MO) when we have lived there.

Those that are living in AA and not affiliated with the University ... how do you like it? Parks, shopping, politics, etc.? Really looking for that couple with no-kids opinion; we aren't worried about school districts, etc. Any quiet neighborhoods to check out as well?

Temple Balls in Lansing or GR?

Where can an old-school smoker find good temple balls in Lansing or GR? Any brands you like?

Anyone else still love solventless extracts? Bubble hash, etc.?

What are people smoking in GR?

For worse, I have been around people using drugs (or alot of alcohol) for 30 years; there are many ways to ruin your life that start with addiction. I say that because I've been seeing more folks lately that are strung out, walking around in PJs, talking to themselves, more folks living in parks, etc.

Like people not begging enough for a crackhead, not twitchy enough for meth, or obvious like an all day park drinker. Just people looking straight up zonked onto some zombie planet - staring through people and objects (if that makes sense), talking to cars, walking slowwww, looking like life just ran them over and real quick. What is happening in GR on the hard drug scene? Anything new? Just a terrible "trickle down" economy?

I have empathy - any of it would be hell on Earth. I have no idea how I would continue.

Kief? HREAM Kief?

I have something to admit ... I love kief. I love mixing into the middle of a middy bowl, power hitting it, and getting blown like it's crack. There ya go.

OK, so I need to start getting some good kief at reasonable bulk prices. I'm here in GR, but often find myself in Lansing and Kalamazoo as well. I am looking for fresh, tasty, golden stuff ... quality head blasting kief. Where do kief-heads go for kief?

Also, how likely am I to find some fire kief at HREAM on Saturday? I prefer it over crumble or sand.

The Rebirth of the DA* 55mm/f1.4 [PZ-1p with Dubblefilm Cinema 800]

The DA* 55mm/f1.4 shoots more 35mm film here ... still firing the PZ-1p, and packing Dubblefilm Cinema 800. A fun film and lens; they both bring character to the end result.

Creeping - Pentax PZ-1p with the DA* 55mm/f1.4

The Pentax DA* 55mm/f1.4 is a vastly underappreciated lens in the world of Pentax. It can do much more than portraits on 35mm (it is a bit more limited on APS-C), and makes for a great street detail lens. The color, clarity, and especially beautiful contrast create great images on almost every body able to control the aperture on an A-series lens. This includes the good old 90's AF film cameras from Pentax - the Pentax PZ-1p in this case.

The lens loves the comforting in-focus beep of the film-era camera, and it isn't hard to get there with the smooth (and big) focus ring. It isn't a small lens, but it isn't huge either ... it feels chunky, well designed, and capable. That being said, the lens body is feeling a bit dated ... it is 17 years old after all. The body material feels like a polymer from that era, and it has the look of that original DA* series. It isn't 2026 pretty at this point - it is utilitarian. At <$300 (for a mint copy on eBay), it is a steal compared to the average 50mm.

Ok, let's talk images ... here is a series of the DA*55mm/f1.4 creeping up on all of those Pentaxians who don't know about it yet. The film is Wolfen NC400 - balanced towards cool blues/greens, high contrast, with grain in the shadows and a muted saturation. I worked on doing some longer crops, for your entertainment.

Who Does Small Job Hydroseeding?

I need a small hydroseed job done this coming weekend (5/16 or 5/17). I will pay immediately if we can workout a price and get the job done on those dates. The yard will already be graded, with topsoil laid down. PM me, or pass my post to someone interested? Thx GR!

GR Smokers? Going to HREAM?

Hi ENTs. I'm a middle aged herb lover and long time smoker, with a wife that has no interest in it. Looking for a smoking bud into disc golf, photography, or whatever is your passion. I would also love to meet someone from GR at HREAM down in Marshall, and talk about being a GR stoner. Just searching out a cannabis friend, as those are hard to come by in an area that is a bit conservative.

The K20D was a pretty amazing camera for 2009 ... it has IBIS, a good chunky feel, features a cool CMOS Samsung sensor, is weather sealed, has live view, and a fully capable K-mount for using all of that old glass that was just hitting stride again ~2010. I took some of my very best shots with it nearly 20 years ago, and I think it was nearly the perfect camera for the time period ... APS-C or not. These shots are from 2009 (with quickie 2026 processing); the first two taken with the FA31/f1.8 and the last two taken with the FA43/f1.9.

Ah, my old love with the CMOS sensor, in-body SR, and the old-school weather sealing. I can still feel her green button!

What more can be said that hasn't been said about the K20D (and the K10D released a year earlier)? In 2008, the K20D was a wonderful release when Pentax was struggling and needed the win. It is well built, ergonomic, fun to use, compatible with all of your favorite K-mount glass, and the results were great (and still are today!). Some of my very best photos were taken in the late 2000s with a K20D ... and quite often an FA 43mm/f1.9 for a great portrait setup. These shots are from 2009 - excuse the 'enthusiastic' 2009-era processing.

Who else loved the K20D?
