Brick supplier for old houses?

I'm getting an exterior door removed in my century home (brick exterior), and I need to order some bricks. Masons have told me that it's going to be very difficult to find bricks that match my existing exterior given the age. I plan on checking out 8 Point in town to see if they anything.

Does anyone know of any other places in town or close by that might have what I need?

Few more downtown updates

Some of this is new, some is old depending on how closely you follow us. Our last post got a good response so we'll keep sharing these here and in The Michigander newsletter.

209 S Ashley (former Running Exchange, across from Recess and the old Downtown Home & Garden): Purgatory Exchange is opening, a place to buy and sell used clothes. It's a large space so will be interesting to see this come together. Opening date: TBD

200 S Ashley (Formerly vacant): Aperitivo is set to open in June 2026. Cocktails, wine, beer, and snacks. Newly painted building, signs up, a cute yellow awning, and a really nice interior. This spot sat vacant for a LONG time and they managed to keep part of the flower mural we've all come to love. Excited for this one.

617 E Liberty (former Molly's Cupcakes): Orijin Bakery opening this summer. We posted about this in our last newsletter. Basically, it's a partnership between The Boro's pastry chef Jin Capobianco Gorian and Sava Farah of The Pulpo Group. Located right near Farah's first restaurant, Sava's. Sava is a total powerhouse and continuing to make waves in the AA food scene.

115 E Liberty (former Robotics Supply): Bev's Bagels is still TBD. No visible progress at the site. We've reached out to ownership about timeline and they responded "I wish". Asked for clarification and did not hear anything back. Will update hear if we hear back. Still hopeful it happens.

405 S Main (ground floor of The Standard): Stubborn Pizza renovation is continuing and making progress. Many Michigander readers say this will be the best pie in AA. Set to open summer 2026.

On the downtown construction: we talked to some business owners downtown and it's really hurting them right now. The DDA put up generic "Business Open" signs (which is better than nothing) and we sent feedback that it wasn't enough. They're now making signs with each impacted business's logo. Not perfect, but credit to them for being super responsive to the concerns we raised.

If this is your kind of thing, we publish a free weekly newsletter about everything happening in Ann Arbor called The Michigander, every Monday.

Anybody know why they are cutting down the trees next to uMich golf course on Ann arbor saline

Looks like they are about to cut the trees down all the way down the golf course across from Pioneer...it has always hidden the golf course, seems weird to see it now

Meet a 21-year-old community college student who's going to China as the first American woman welder in the trades Olympics

Growing up, Mikala Sposito dreamed of being a trailblazer.

“I always wanted to be the first female to do something,” she said.

That dream is about to be realized.

The 21-year-old from Dexter, Michigan, will be the first woman to represent the United States in welding at the WorldSkills Competition in China.

Sposito, a student at Washtenaw Community College, earned the coveted spot by winning the USA Weld Trials in Huntsville, Alabama, earlier this year.

“It was very, very close the whole time, but I was the one who made it to Shanghai,” Sposito said.

Described as the Olympics of the skilled trades, WorldSkills determines the globe’s best in technical disciplines that include construction, information technology, manufacturing and robotics.

Where to get garden care when out of town?

This summer, I need someone to come over twice daily for about two weeks to water my outdoor potted plants, tomatoes, peppers, and squash.

I looked at TaskRabbit but the booking window is only a few weeks out, I’d prefer to find somebody now.

Where should I look for a reliable and safe person to hire?

Ann Arbor v.s traverse city?

Have been here in A2/MI for a year now and want to explore some new place. Rent prices seem to be similar and my thought is if I’m paying this much already, I’d like to be closer to water/nature.
Some background about me: early 30’s, single, female, South Asian
I grew up in the south and in very white towns. I’m okay being the only person who looks like me—I just want to make sure the people around me won’t put on a red baseball cap or white hoodie…

Editing to add: I wfh, so I’m not looking for a job in tc

Waitressing job

Hi, i’ve been applying to a few restaurants out here and was wondering if anyone has any experiences with working there/how staff is treated!
The last job I had I worked at for five years I had amazing management and coworkers, and I know good management is really hard to come by in the restaurant industry.
Here’s ones I’ve applied to so far:

Carlyle Grill
Hop cat
Sam hill
Mani osteria
And Union joint

I have had interviews w two so far and am waiting to hear back.
Also, any recommendations would be appreciated !!

Anyone know what's going on in Dexter behind Busch's?

Looks like there is a house in the subdivision behind Busch's in Dexter that has yellow tape and about seven police cars around it. Police scanners aren't talking about it

Davies House Inn Owner

Today I had an awful interaction with the owner Jan and they were one of the loudest and rudest people I’ve ever met. All I did was my job in trying to assist her and she got as loud and mean as she could from the very start.

She called me a fairy and then proceeded to yell at other staff that were overly polite to her while trying to help.

I’ve seen reviews of their bed and breakfast say the owners were nice and unfortunately that is no longer true if it ever once was. I never had any intention of staying there and I suggest others not give their money to people like Jan that think they can talk to customer service people however they want.

School refusal support group?

I’m wondering if there is currently a local group for families of school refusing kids. Either for the kids or parents?

Moving to Ypsi for work, looking for apartment recs (1–2 bed, under $1,700) [32F

I (32F) am a medical professional relocating for work and currently deep in the apartment-hunting rabbit hole. Would love any honest recs from people who actually live in Ypsi/A2.

**What I'm looking for:**

- 1 or 2 bed

- In-unit washer/dryer

- Hardwood floors + stainless/chrome appliances

- Budget: under $1,700/month

- A neighborhood that feels safe, especially as a woman living solo

**Nice to haves:**

- Close to a gym (or a complex with a decent fitness center)

-Greenery

- Hiking/walking trails within a short drive

I've been browsing Zillow and Apartments.com but honestly nothing beats local knowledge. If you've had a good experience with a specific complex or property manager, I'd love to hear it. Are there any management companies or landlords I should steer clear of? Unresponsive maintenance, shady lease terms, safety issues, that kind of thing.

Any neighborhood guidance would also be super helpful. I don't know Ypsi well enough yet to know which pockets of town feel most livable.
