This is so great. It demonstrates that the tremendous power of Taemin’s song can hold its own with, no, amplify the vision of a brilliant director like del Toro. Haven’t seen the film but now I intend to. It’s eerie and powerfully haunting that it’s so easy to imagine Taemin as the monster with this actor’s lovely physique and this chiaroscuro lighting.

​Here's my latest essay on Taemin. Hope it interests some of you. As I said elsewhere, I still don't know who my audience is. First two paragraphs below and the link.

Float is a pretty song from Taemin’s new album, PHASE 1: Soft Violence. It’s melodically charming. The just-released live stage is a vision in white, with a few references to heaven, if that’s what you take the feathers on his costume to be. The video, however, is full of ugly things despite its wedding cake colors. Slime. Clay. An eye without an iris. Crushed, soggy paper. Taemin floats, but in what looks like glycerin, something viscous and syrupy. For a moment you might think of the fluid a baby floats in before birth. And it’s not a ballad despite the declaration of love it purports to offer. It’s weird.

Taemin plays a Pygmalion role. The artist of Greek mythology who created a sculpture of a woman and fell in love with her. He has clay on his fingers, and what looks like white glue and shredded paper. The ingredients and mess of creation. When he first turns to gaze at us, the look in his eyes is heavy lidded and full of ennui. It’s enigmatic, but kind of jaded. I don’t think he’s suffering, exactly. I don’t think he’s madly in love, either.

Float: Taemin, Pygmalion and Frankenstein

It seems to me that technically every member of SHINee and the group are eligible for the new Grammy Best Asian Pop Performance category. While people are saying this might be a bone tossed to BTS, I see no reason why SHINee should not be nominated. Everyone knows ATMOS is a diamond and the band is legend. They are the kind of prestige legacy act that would make the Grammys first year of awards have some real historical impact. They have to be nominated by August 14th I believe. I wonder if there is any reasonable way to grass roots this idea quickly. The nomination can come from the company or any member I believe. I don’t think they will necessarily win, the Grammys are a popularity contest to a large degree. But a nomination would be so boss.

Anyone know any more than me or have some solid info or ideas about the way to make some noise quickly?

My husband is a sound historian (aka music and culture archivist). He does audio only. The other day he posted the entire concert of day 2 of SHINEE WORLD VIII. I listen to SHINee many places but I have defaulted to videos whenever I have the option. I think their live concerts are better than their records for one reason or another. He advised me to listen to this with headphones. Because in the years I’ve played SHINee he was always distracted by something else. The dancing, the production, the fact it was just in the background.

I haven’t ever experienced a recording this powerful. The singing is so vibrant. The band is fantastic. The songs always stand up but I felt like I was hearing the concert for the first time and I was THERE,

Anyway I encourage people to listen to this and share if and how the experience was different. I realize I’m hooked on the total package of visual production and live performance. But I think from now on I will be introducing SHINee to certain people with recordings like this. How have you introduced people to them?

Can people give me the names of some used record stores in Seoul. I’ll be going next week.

Hiatuses pass. Eras change. I thought it might be meaningful to write some of these memories down while they’re still fresh. And make room for more.

I can’t help imagining Key coming across this one day and reading these stories. I hope he does.
