All that I know of so far are:

Need help finding a gift for Sister-in-law

Hi, I know NOTHING about K-Pop so please forgive my ignorance ahead of time! I'm looking for a thoughtful gift for my sister-in-law for the beginning of next month. My budget is around $50-75 dollars. My wife picked up a few pins from Hot Topic yesterday but I don't know what else to pair with it. Any help would be immensely appreciated!

What is the 5th gen girl group landscape looking like?

Hello people! I'm a 3rd gen Kpop fan who's still following the industry but I'm definitely a bit out of touch with 5th gen girl groups. I've been wanting to get into them a little more but I realized I don't know what the landscape is looking like? I know the groups from major companies but which ones are doing good and which ones are having a hard time finding their footing? And which groups from smaller companies are doing good?

I know it doesn't matter when it comes to listening to music but I'm just curious. I'll be looking at streaming numbers and album sales but I'd like to know from an international fan's perspective.

Thank you!

Is it too late to become a trainee or audition?

I turned 16 late may and I've never really been into kpop but I've always wanted to become a singer. I recently started seeing videos about trainees, etc and it really sparked something in me. I'm half mexican quarter korean and quarter japanese, so I think I'd be something new.

I've also never had proper singing classes but I'd consider myself to have a pretty good voice despite that, as for dancing I've never really tried it but I'm willing to pay for classes starting soon and practice at home too.

I'm not sure if It's too late to try or anything since I see it keeps getting younger and younger or im not sure since kids my age are debuting/ already debuted.

What do u guys think I should do?

Songs with Similarities to Boo by Apink

Hello! Boo by Apink has probably become my favorite K-Pop song, and while Apink's discography is really good, no song does what Boo does for me. I was wondering if anyone could identify songs with similarities to it. Even if it's minimal, I will still check it out. I'm always open to listening to more!

What are the differences between HYBE’s labels and SM’s centers/JYPE’s divisions?

From my understanding, HYBE is a holding company that owns several different music labels, including BigHit, Pledis, Belift, ADOR, KOZ, etc. Each label has its own independent management team that makes decisions for the 1-3 groups under the label, with HYBE only involved on the financial side.

On the other hand, SM has several different “centers” with their own names, including One, Prism, Red, Neo, and Wizard. These centers seem to function very similarly to HYBE’s labels, each having around 1-3 groups and a management team that has independence regarding how the groups are managed. JYPE also has a similar setup with four different “divisions,” each having its own name, management team, and 1-3 artists.

Additionally, there are some entities under both SM and JYPE called “labels,” including ScreaM Records and Krucialize for SM and Studio J and INNIT for JYPE. These are distinct entities from the centers/divisions, but I don’t know what the difference is.

What are the functional differences between the operations of labels under HYBE vs. SM’s centers or JYPE’s divisions? And why are some entities under SM or JYPE considered “labels,” while others are considered centers or divisions instead? How are the labels managed differently from the centers/divisions?

Also, please correct me if I got anything wrong

Looking for MV/video references for a short film edit — fog, glitter, Y2K chaos, moody abstract, quirky BTS style

Hey all! A friend of mine is editing a short film and wants to pull in a bunch of different visual styles depending on the scene. I've been showing him music videos for reference (against his will, might I add😅) and now he thinks they're good material and wants to see more. Would love any and all suggestions, doesn't need to be a perfect match.

  1. Dreamy/magical — fog, bloom, glitter, lens flares, soft "magic" feel, dreamy

  2. Y2K flashy — quick cuts, high energy, old-school Britney Spears-era pop video chaos, maximalist effects

  3. Abstract & moody — no focus on faces, more about bodies/movement, sepia or negative color effects, long crossfades, reverse footage, melancholic tone

  4. BTS-style — fun, quirky behind-the-scenes edits

For calibration, videos I've already shown him: most ENHYPEN's MVs, BTS Spring day, Blood Sweat and Tears

and suggested: ILLIT (dreamcore vibe), NewJeans (Y2K), some ITZY's MVs like Loco, BTS "Idol," RAYE "Where Is My Husband," and some Sabrina Carpenter's MVs.

Drop anything that comes to mind, even one video helps! Doesn't necessarily have to be K-pop, anything would do!❤️

Edit: Thank you for all the recommendations! I'll be sure to share all these w him!!🥰

dating in the industry

i know kpop is mainly targeted to straight girls so i understand why male idols are not allowed to (and by “understand” i mean i get the fvcked up twisted logic). but why are female kpop idols not allowed to date too? either way, this needs to change.

Woochan's Homophobia Controversy?

I've fallen down an ADP rabbithole since finding out about their black ocean, and was finding out about their controversies and why they are so widely criticized. I've come across the one about Woochan being homophobic, and seen very mixed opinions, my confusion is a lot lol this is too long but could anyone shed some light on it?

I've seen two main translations for the video, one that was roughly: 'But you're my hyung, how could you think about dating me? I'm... I'm not like that...'

and another being: 'I'm hyung to you and you say you want to date me - for me... no' and then on the last bit there was an intonation of *no minors*.

I don't speak korean, but from what I've found 'hyung' means older brother, but can be used by women for older men who are not senior (often to show a lack of romantic relationship, because then its common to use 'oppa'?), by men to older men who are not senior, and by men to refer to an older male romantic partner. It seems that the controversy stands on which way it the term 'hyung' was taken?

Because the commenter he was replying to said: 'Hyung, let's date', we can assume that it was (probably?) not a female commenter, and a commenter who used the phrase in a romantic way (obviously ik), but which way did Woochan take it? Did he turn the commenter down because he was a minor (but to my knowledge, men who aren't minors but just younger than Woochan could've also called him 'hyung'), or because he was being adverse to the gay part? Because if you take away the added *no minors* bit, its still sounds homophobic because of the emphasis/repetition of the idea of the comment sounds critical of it, instead of just saying he wasn't gay?

Oh and also I saw a fan account post about it with a cut to a part of the live afterwards where Woochan was talking about how children were in exam season and how they shouldn't be watching and instead studying, but because it was a cut (and I haven't seen the full live) I can't tell whether that bit connected to the 'Hyung, let's date' comment or whether it was a cut to a later unconnected part of the live in order to redeem the comment in some way? But if it was connected, how did Woochan know the commenter was a minor in exam season?

Could any Koreans or people who lived there and speak korean explain their thoughts? Translations can consistently be innacurate or unclear, and not being part of the culture I can't confidently place what he meant from context clues!

Lol this is quite alot for just a random controversy from a group I don't stan or really know that well, and knowing whether it was homophobic or not will have literally no impact on my life, however its buggingggg me and I need some closure - I have spent wayyyy too much time on this random ass controversy instead of getting my work done! 😂🤦Thanks to any replies!

K-pop songs that give off fabrics?

Hiya! I've always had this odd phenomenon where certain k-pop songs have like a feel for me. Like say After Like by Ive gives me like sequin fabric texture.

This may sound craaazzyy but I was wondering if anyone had any similar feelings?

I'm specifically looking for examples for these fabrics > Denim, Wool, Silk, Cotton, Leather, but if you have any that you feel like would be a certain fabric, lmk!! I'm so curious!! Mwah!

Best kpop survival shows, old and new?

I have recently became very into watching kpop tv and from a previous suggestion I’m partway through I-land2 and love it.

What other survival shows are worth watching? And are there any new ones coming out?

I think I lean very heavily into girl groups but might give one boy survival show a chance.

Edit - forgot to add, has to be subbed and bonus points if it’s available on viki rakuten

How big were the T-ara members(most specifically Hyomin, Eunjung and Jiyeon) during their peaks?

I think it is safe to say that for the past few days I have fallen through a T-ara rabbit hole. While I was scrolling through the comments I saw a post from back then pointing out that they only knew Hyomin, Eunjung, and Jiyeon. Of course one post doesn’t mean that it’s the case for everyone, but looking through a few posts of when T-ara was at their peak back in 2009-2012 that seemed to had been the case with a lot of people. I looked through their wiki and I was shock to find out both Jiyeon and specially Eunjung had quite the impressive acting career before they became members of T-ara. Jiyeon had a few roles before their debut but Eunjung had roles dating all the way back to 1995 when she was only 7.

Through their peak the three of them got a few acting roles and became ambassadors, Eunjung in particular also appeared in We got married. The three of them featured in a track with Davichi called Wonder Woman which was a hit and Jiyeon also appeared in a ton of OSTs that charted pretty well. They were also the three members that basically only appeared in T-ara’s film versions of their music videos. Hyomin in particular also seemed to have had quite the successful solo career in China from 2014-2019. Three of her songs charted inside the top 10 China’s hot 100 back when it was active with Sketch even going number 1 for eight weeks. While the three of them had an impressive career, Boram, Qri, and Soyeon didn’t really appear in much projects outside of T-ara. I kinda started to understand why not many people were aware of who they were since Eunjung, Jiyeon, and Hyomin seemed to had been massive.

Of course I know Wikipedia isn’t really much of reliable source nor a few comments, so I wanted to ask and receive an answer from someone who is aware of this topic. How big were Hyomin, Eunjung, and Jiyeon truly during their peak and were the other three members not really known?
