Day 754 of learning to play the guitar: My Two Year Guitar Progress Video

Last year, i made a "one year guitar progress video" and wondered where I where i will find myself in another year. I spent a lot of time learning to play solos. Stairway to Heaven, Hotel Cali, Comfortably Numb, the usual suspects.

In order to learn to play these songs i needed to be comfortable with alternate picking, legato (hammer on and pull offs), bends, 2nps and 3nps (notes per string). In this two years i must have played like 200-300 rock guitars solos. Because I don't spend a lot of time on each song, my playing is sloppy, but I was very exposed to a wide range of guitar riffs, licks and solos.

Moving forward, for my third year, i want to spend my time working on my bend accuracy, vibrato stability, sense of timing, phrasing, and improvising.

Some FAQs:

  1. Tone

I got lazy when recording this video haha. I wanted to record it quickly rather than trying for the perfect take. So i used mostly the same tone for almost all the songs xD Sorry if the tone is not the most fitting.

  1. Practice

I dont practice any of the songs. Instead i just look at any given song and identify the most difficult part and i practice just that 1-4 measures. I also catalog techniques like 3nps or sweeping and I practice those. I have a video showing how i practice. The pros of practicing this way is you can eventually learn to play any song very quickly. The cons is that because i dont practice the piece and i dont practice the transitions, even though i can play the song, i dont capture the nuances and the feel of the song really well.

  1. Fender Strat sticker

I will remove the sticker soon haha. This guitar is new and i wanted to take a New Gear Day video but im too lazy hahaha. Soon!

  1. Recording

I record everything on my phone. So yeah the EQ and the volume and mix is terrible. Sorry!!

I’ve played the guitar for two years. Can play full songs from Oasis to Metallica. Avenged Sevenfold is now my current challenge, am not that great at playing chromatic notes and fast sweeps. Probably another 1-2 years to cross this bridge. Meanwhile wanted to mess around with some 7 strings just for variety. Can anyone recommend some songs? I think I need to be on B standard due to floating trem. Might lock my bridge but since the guitar is new, let me just see what it can do without changing tunings first.

Recently I came across a youtuber, Andrew Baena on my feed and was inspired to buy a 7 string and to cross genre. I have been playing guitar for 2 years, but i mostly stay in the rock genre. My current level is I can play 90% of any classic rock song from 70s to 2000s quite comfortably. I mostly cover rock guitar solos. The usual stuff, Stairway to Comfortably Numb to Fade to Black. Which is why i was looking to branch out to look for other genres to challenge myself.

Looking at Andrew Baena, my technical abilities are not good enough to chug at that level and i want to challenge myself to improve. Also think its fun moving from classic rock and metal to prog, djent, and modern metal.

I have quite a few eletric guitars, but i'm thinking of selling my Ibanez J Custom RG 8570 (see third picture) because I don't really bond with the color, and also because i want to fund the purchase of my 7 string. Its a great guitar otherwise, really love the neck and this guitar allows me to play fast and sweep effortlessly. But i dont like the middle pickup and the knob placement as it gets in my way of my palm mutes.

What do you guys think of the HZK1?

I really like it because of the color primarily. I think it looks sick and im someone who needs to like looking at his guitar to bond with it. The guitar has no tone knob and no middle pickup which makes it great for modern guitar playing. Only catch is its not a fixed bridge so i would not be able to change tunings. This might be a b standard only guitar. I also dont know how fishman pickups soundlike or if i would hate the wider neck of a 7 string that i would totally be okay not playing 7 strings. This guitar is Japan only so i would need to buy blind, which complicates matter.

Separately, which grain do you prefer (picture 3 vs 4). Picture 3 has fewer black streaks on the guitar body, a cleaner look, while picture 4 has more black streaks.
