Why do so many wrestling fans not understand wrestling?

I came across a post titled "Why was Hogan so popular?" "And what made him get pushed so heavily when other wrestlers deserved the top spot more and wrestled better?"

He didn't say why others deserved it more? It's like if i say it, people will just agree. And seeing as it's not real, who wrestles better is kinda subjective.

Wrestling is entertainment, it's a novelty act. Whether you're a gimmick or portraying more serious legitimate style, your job is the same...To entertain people. And if they like you, you'll get a push.

Hogan got pushed because he was the best draw. Whether you personally liked him or not doesn't change that. So what is so hard to understand here?

This guy has clearly watched one too many Bret Hart shoot interviews, where he's like "I deserved it because i worked hard". It doesn't work like that.

And Bret knows it doesn't work like that, he just can't get over it. Bret, you were the best wrestler because it was in the script. If Vince wanted Warrior to beat you in ten seconds, guess what?

Look is everything

I was watching an interview with Bret, and he was talking about why he resonated with the fans, and he said whether it was the wet hair shades and pink, i dunno? And I said to myself yes that's exactly why.

Yeah and we know Bret was a great technical wrestler. But would he have the same appeal without the hitman look/persona? Not just singling out Bret, it's the same for everyone if you wanna be one of the top guys.

It's why they cut promos and have theme music, it's all about creating characters that you can love or hate. Anyone can learn a bunch of pretend wrestling moves. I only care about that, if I'm into the guy doing them.

Is too technical, too boring?

I was reading a post about football (soccer for our American brah's), and how the game now is too technical and robotic, and that's it's lost it's panache. And I thought that's the same criticism today's wrestling gets, or even back in the day when you had a solid technical match, but it was boring.

Smarks always talk about this guy, that match, technical, workrate etc, and everything is technically sound and they can do a twirly flip thing that might get a 9.5 on the Meltzer score card. But why could these guys never pull in the crowds like the guys who have great characters, charisma and can cut promos?

What made wrestling great was the great characters, the promos, and the vibe that all of that creates. Without all that, all the great technical wrestling and timing and pretty flips/moves etc, just falls flat.

Why did as the purists say, "Cartoony two move Hogan" carry a company and it's ppvs? It's because Hogan had IT, and IT is what makes the match and wrestling work.

Who wasn't a fan of the attitude era?

I was in my early teens so I was the perfect age for it, but i just never took to it. I liked it in parts. Bits of 98 and 2000 i liked. I hated 99, it was just Jerry Springer in a wrestling ring. And looking back, it's a dated era that i don't think has aged that well. What about you?

Imagine a feud with Scott Steiner and Davey Boy. The promos would be legendary.

Steiner - Now everybody knows wants to know, if I'd beat Davey Boy Smith? Well Davey boy, your arms are big. But I have the largest uurms in world. And size does matter, BITCH!!

Davey - Scott Steiner, you claim to have the largest uurms in the world. But I've been wrestling since I was fifteen years.........old, because I'm bizarre. That's why they call me the British bulldog.

That Canadian wrestler no one talks about now. Will he ever be inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Seriously...what are your thoughts on Rick Martel?

If they're not great wrestlers, why are they great draws?

It proves that wrestling is all about persona and charisma. I can't name one guy that was a needle mover, solely based on the fact he does loads of moves and is technical?

According to Mr Backlund, the Sultan has never eaten marijuana or swallowed cocaine.

The four way cage match between Sting, Flair, Funk and Muta is a mess. But it's why I love wrestling. If wrestling isn't fun, you're not doing it right.

Is Bret really bitter?

I don't think it's him being bitter, so much as him being asked the same old questions and to relive all the negative things that happened to him.

I doubt when he's at home enjoying his retirement with his family, he's dwelling on all of this. Then his manager calls him and says, you've been offered to do a Q&A, and they'll pay you this....interested? And he's like sure.

And when he does it they're like, so Bret. Tell us about that night you got kicked in the head by Goldberg again. Thoughts on Triple H again. What was Hulk and Bishoff like in WCW again. Montreal again.

Enough of these shoot interviews already, or ffs, ask him something different.

I saw a post of Harley Race showcasing the art of an atomic drop. It was good, but it wasn't perfect.

Jake the Snake.

He's considered to be one of the great workers, and I'm not saying he isn't. But you never hear people talk about that one classic stand out match that he had. All the other big names/top workers have that match or matches, but not Jake. So what would you say his one stand out match or best matches were?

Why the hate for Marc Mero?

He's made out to be this awful wrestler, who only knew how to work like Johnny b badd (whatever that means?) But he could go in the ring, and was actually a pretty solid guy.

Anyone else think these arguments are so tired?

I come across these short videos on YouTube. One of Ted Dibiase talking about Hogan being labelled as a bad wrestler. How do you define what makes a good wrestler when it's entertainment? Hogan was a huge draw, so he was obviously entertaining, so doesn't that make him a good wrestler?

Another one was JR talking again about how Warrior was just a bodybuilder with face paint, this is the same guy who wanted to push 70 year old looking Dr Death in the attitude era. Ok we get that Warrior was never Dean Malenko, but how many people bought a ticket to see Dean Malenko?
