Welcome to the NHK, highly underrated!
First saw this in 2015, and I’ve watched it multiple times since. In my own words, it’s a dark psychological comedy about a shut-in trying to rehabilitate himself and re-enter the real world, only to find himself drifting even further away from it.
There’s the crazy otaku neighbor, and a girl who seemingly has no business being with him, yet insists on staying by his side. At first, she doesn’t seem nearly as broken as he is, but over time you realize she’s just as messed up in her own way, which makes them strangely perfect for each other.
It dives deeply into themes of social isolation, technology, otaku culture, and the growing loneliness epidemic (which is funny, because this is even MORE of an issue today!)
This isn’t like most anime that recycle the same jokes and stereotypes. Honestly, it feels more like watching a real person through a hidden camera slowly lose his mind. It’s full of laughs, tears, and scenes that will stay with you long after you finish the series.
