Dentist in Tokyo - broken orthodontic retainer

Hi! I'm struggling to find a dentist in Tokyo who either speaks basic English or is comfortable using translation tools (I really don't mind) and accepts NHI.

I have a permanent retainer (the metal wire behind my teeth), and some of the glue has come loose, so it's bothering me. I'm also worried that my teeth might move. I'm 99% sure it's probably just a matter of reapplying a tiny bit of glue.

I had the same issue a few months ago in Kyoto, but I ended up paying ¥17,000 out of pocket for a 1-minute consultation because the dentist said it was an orthodontic issue and therefore wasn't covered by insurance, even though I have NHI.

Any recommendations please? I literally spent the whole afternoon looking for a good, reasonably priced dentist based on Reddit and Facebook recommendations, but I'm scared of ending up paying such an expensive fee again.

Thank you so much!!

(24) to (26) - Jaw surgery changed my life

edit: I’m engaged, so please don’t DM me — and no need to tell me “lucky guy” or send unsollicited pics. Thanks.

edit 2: I did this surgery for medical reasons (you can check Class 2 malocclusion online), which led to aesthetics improvement. It's not plastic surgery and didn't do it for cosmetic purposes only. If you need more information on my journey, you can check my posts on the 'Jaw Surgery' sub. Take care!

I’ve been very insecure about how I looked my whole life, thinking I had a “rat face” or that I looked like Phineas from Phineas and Ferb. I hated myself so much and always been told I was the ugly girl at school.

I’ve known since I was around 12 that I needed jaw surgery for medical purpose, but my parents refused without really giving me a reason. After feeling bad about myself for so many years, I finally found the courage to start my “glow-up” journey by getting braces and consulting surgeons.

I feel so much better about myself now. I still don’t necessarily think I’m pretty or anything, but I’m no longer hiding myself or feeling scared that someone might see me from the side. And honestly, that alone has changed so much for me. 🤍

PS: I hope it’s okay for me to post this here! My surgery was not done for aesthetic reasons, but for medical ones, although I’m obviously very happy with the aesthetic changes too.

1 year post-op — Only regret is not having it done sooner

🔨 Movements: 2 mm lower jaw advancement, 2 mm upper jaw setback, and 16 mm genioplasty advancement.
🤍 1 year + 2 months post-op update!

I had DJS + genioplasty + a bone graft. I wore lingual braces for 1 year before the surgery and removed them 6 months after. My surgery was performed in Paris, France, by Dr. Davrou, at a public hospital, so I didn’t have to pay for the surgery.

If you want to see the full progression, I’ve posted updates on my profile from immediately post-op, 6 days, 1 month, 2 months and 4 months post-op, and the X-rays as well.

At 1 year and 2 months, I’m really happy with my overall result and with how much more settled everything feels compared to the first few months. It’s still weird to look back at my old photos and realize how much my face has changed.

One thing I unfortunately didn’t see any improvement with is my breathing. Since my lower jaw advancement was only 2 mm, I wasn’t expecting a huge change, but I still struggle with my breathing. I had a septoplasty at 7 months post-op, mainly because one of my nostrils was almost completely closed. It helped structurally, but I still have the same breathing issues overall. What’s frustrating is that my scans don’t show anything abnormal: my sinuses aren’t blocked and, technically, I should be able to breathe normally. So this is something I still need to figure out and hopefully get to the bottom of.

Aesthetically, one thing I’ve become more aware of is facial asymmetry, especially in photos. I feel like it’s much more noticeable on camera than in real life, although I’m still happy with my overall result.

I also have a thin face and very thin skin, so my plates are quite visible. They create little bumps that are especially noticeable around my chin and on my left side (where I have my beauty mark on my cheek). They also bother me when I touch them, so it’s not just an aesthetic issue. Because of that, I’m planning to have the plates removed at some point.

🌟🌻 Despite all of these little things, I’m still extremely happy. Looking back, I’ve really come a long way. This first year after surgery went by incredibly fast, and it’s crazy how quickly you forget about the pain, the liquid diet, the swelling, and all the struggles that come with recovery. In the end, all that’s left is the pride of having gone through it and seeing how far I’ve come. :)

Banana bread in my rice cooker!

After 6 months in Japan, I am so happy to finally had the chance to bake again! I am still looking for a second hand oven, but in the meantime I discovered I could cook cakes in my rice cooker!

I adapted my banana bread recipe for the size of my rice cooker, launched the « パン » mode for 50min and the cake turned out absolutely perfect! First try!! I am so happy 🎵🎉

Here is the recipe if anyone is interested:

For 1 small banana bread - I used a 3 cups capacity Zojirushi rice cooker :
- 2 ripe bananas
- 1 egg
- 40 g melted butter
- 50 g sugar
- 1tbs mapple sirup
- 100 g all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 pinch of salt
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- 30 g walnuts or chocolate chips

We were 2 people eating it and we destroyed the whole cake in one evening lol

Craft hobbies in Tokyo

Hi everyone!

I've been in Japan on a Working Holiday Visa for the past 5 months, and I'm really missing all the little creative hobbies I used to have back home (sewing, painting, ceramics... I love trying a bit of everything! 🌟🎨)

If anyone has recommendations for creative shops, art studios, multi-session classes in Tokyo, or even communities/groups around arts and crafts, I'd love to hear them. 🙂

And if anyone happens to be selling their craft supplies (especially sewing equipment), please let me know! 😚

Thank you very much!

1 month here - still no place to stay :(

Hi everyone,

My boyfriend and I are on Working Holiday Visas, and we're planning to arrive in Fukuoka around June 27th and stay for about a month.

Unfortunately, our original accommodation plan fell through, so we're urgently looking for a place to stay. However, we haven't been able to find anything available within our budget. Most options seem to be over ¥200,000 per month, while our maximum budget is around ¥150,000 per month, including all utilities and fees.

We've already checked monthly furnished apartments on the main websites (Leopalace, Oakhouse, Cross House, etc.), as well as share houses, but haven't had much luck. Hotels and Airbnbs are also too expensive.

I know this is quite last-minute, unfortunately, but if anyone knows of any websites we may have missed or has any tips or recommendations, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot!

Winter clothes storage in Tokyo

Hi!

Context: I arrived in Japan 3 months ago on a Working Holiday Visa with my boyfriend, from France.

We spent 3 months in Tokyo, and we’re now continuing our discovery of the country by going to Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, etc. We plan to come back to Tokyo around mid-autumn.

We have quite a lot of winter clothes, mostly sweaters and coats, that we’d like to store somewhere, ideally in Tokyo, so we can travel a bit lighter over the next few months :)

Does anyone have recommendations for storage options in Tokyo? I also have no idea about the budget.

Thanks a lot 🌟🌻
