Cave divers with families are some of the most selfish people

I can’t comprehend how people go through the depths of a cave, push through tight spaces with a real chance of not making it out alive, and put their lives at risk, for what? Meanwhile, their families, including their children, wait for them with no guarantee they’ll come home. Sure, there are safety precautions and proper gear, but does that guarantee safety? I think not.

And even when the diver comes back fine every single time, their family still pays a cost. That anxiety doesn’t go away because nothing went wrong this trip.

Edit: I get that a lot of sports carry real risk, and someone pointed that out in the comments. But out of curiosity I went down a yt “things going wrong” videos across different extreme sports/hobbies, and cave diving footage was disproportionately represented. That’s what I’m getting at: it’s not just that the risk exists, it’s that the risk-to-reward ratio feels especially lopsided here compared to other high-risk activities.
