Všetci piati boli mladí, teda 25 a menej.

Niekoľko krát sme ho upozornili keď sme sa ho niečo opýtali a on začal rozprávať o niečom úplne inom.

Grimstone's Cannonball furnace completely misses the mark

#Context

There's a Furnace on Grimstone (87 Sailing req) which allows you to smelt cannonballs significantly faster. Recently a NPC for unnoting bars has been added next to the furnace for even faster smelting and convenience.

#Problem

Sailing combat requires a lot of cannonballs, so introducing a special place to make them makes perfect sense. What doesn't make sense is the current implementation of Grimstone's Cannonball Furnace. It doesn't address the demand for Cannonballs for Sailing, and instead addresses a completely different and unrelated problem that, for the most part, did not need to be solved.

  • Bronze, Iron and Mithril cannonballs are readily available in Port Roberts shop in vast quantities at low price. There's no reason to smelt these whatsoever, as doing so would be a waste of both time and gold.

  • Steel Cannonballs are special because their primary use case is Dwarven Multicannon. They are often found in Slayer and PvM drop tables, and retain value due to their usefulness and high demand. Grimstone Furnace makes crafting those significantly faster, but there's no reason to use them for Sailing.

  • Adamant and Rune Cannonballs are desired for Sailing combat, however smelting them makes zero sense from economic standpoint. The problem is that it's incredibly inefficient to make these Cannonballs - you get just 4 Cannonballs per metal Bar. You're losing about 40% of Adamant Bar's value, and about 80% of Rune Bar's value when turning them into Cannonballs.

So simply said, nobody is going to be using Grimstone Furnace to make cannonballs for Sailing, instead it's only useful for making Dwarf Multicannon cheaper to use.

#Proposal

If the goal is to make smelting cannonballs a viable method for procuring ammunition for Sailing, then the efficiency of the smelting needs to change.

What I propose is reconceptualizing Mith+ Cannonballs - instead of being made from solid metal, they could be just Plated Steel Cannonballs. Plating is IRL process where we cover surface of a metal object with thin layer of different metal. We regularly do this with Jewellry (e.g. Rhodium-plating gold rings) or machinery parts (zinc plating for corrosion resistance, chrome for hardness).

How it would function in game is simple - in order to make Mithril cannonball or better, you'd need a Metal bar and Steel Cannonballs. The higher tier, the more Cannonballs you can plate.

So for example Mithril Bar would make 8 Mithril Cannonballs, Adamant Bar 14, Rune bar 20.

This also opens up an interesting option - smelting Dragon Cannonballs. You see, there's a problem with Dragon Sheets, Nails and Keel parts - every player needs a limited quantity of them, so they will be deprecating in price over time. This is especially true considering the proposed buffs to their drop rates. Allowing players to turn these into Dragon Cannonballs at reasonable rate would create sink for these items, stabilizing their price, as well as creating extra source of these Cannonballs.

#The Faith of Beasts spoilers ahead

I was wondering about the apparently non-existent Carryx surveillance of their subject species. I came to a conclusion they probably don't even understand the concept of secrecy or conspiracy, and here's why:

  • Carryx treat subject species the same way as they treat other Carryx. They recognize physical differences and needs, but not social or psychological differences of their subjects. We can observe this every time they interact with subject species all the time

  • While Carryx do have conflicts among themselves, I wasn't able to find single case of them conspiring, intriguing or doing anything that wasn't their purpose. They don't sabotage their peers in order to advance through the hierarchy, they don't have rivalries. While they do have internal conflicts, they are resolved immediately through direct action - challenge followed by a fight for dominance. They're very machine-like in this regard.

Combining these two led me to the conclusion that they're oblivious to the concept of conspiracy. That's why is the surveillance of subject species basically non-existent, that's why was that one subject species able to wipe out their homeworld, that's why can Daffyd and the crew conspire all the time with zero acknowledgement from the Carryx.

There's also more, but slightly weaker evidence:

  • It's stated multiple times that Carryx don't run some registry of humans, they wouldn't realize when one human dissapeared and a different one suddenly appeared (the spy)
  • It doesn't seem like they were suspicious of Jesslyn's story and actions, more like confused. The same reaction could be observed when the Librarian questioned Daffyd about whether or not can Humans send out information bursts.
  • Daffyd couldn't think of/find a word for Secret during the incident with Freis, so he instead used word "privacy"
  • The data streams from the archive don't seem to be encrypted, the spy is able to intercept and read them, it's just that's there's too much data
  • The amount 'freedom' Jesslyn is given during her task, as well as the freedom The Spy and Daffyd had while flying around. There was no suspicion

What Carryx do understand is withholding information - for example with cloaking field they used for their ships, and the use of Void Tendrils as a way to survey planets before they physically reach them.

What do you think about it?

Also during the incident with Tonner Freis Daffyd threatens the Soft Lothark by sending an information about their secret chemical communication to the Carryx. But I don't think Carryx would react to this information the same way Daffyd and the Lothark thought - just the fact that Lothark have other means of communication wouldn't immediately appear as a threat or a challenge to the Carryx. Humans communicate with each other freely all the time, even talk conspiracy, and the Carryx just don't care until a real threat or challenge surfaces. Even during the events of book 1 Daffyd had to point out that the splinter group are a threat to Carryx.
