There’s that old expression…

Which one is worse: the broken window or the double (kind of triple) parking?

The broken window got my attention first, but I quickly saw the other problem. I can only imagine how many drivers, besides me, that weren't able to park next to this Prius.

Just in case anyone wanted to hop onto Kernel v7.1

It doesn't work on 26.04 LTS. Kernel v7.1.1 doesn't work either, although I can see v7.1.x eventually working on Kubuntu. This is the first time I've ever seen a kernel panic on Kubuntu (or any Linux distro). I had to revert to kernel v7.0.13. Quite a bummer since I was looking forward to the improved NTFS filesystem driver.

In honor of Father's Day...

Here's a character inspired by a fictitious father, and my first ever ranger type, I plan on playing in the near future.

My mini-adventure to obtain the "In Balduran's Image" achievement!

While playing BG2 (EE) as a (female elven) cleric, I realized this was an achievement I never got, so I looked into it and quickly realized that my cleric simply doesn't have the GP needed to buy the remaining Balduran items at the present time... and I don't want to use a cheat code. So I started looking up my old saved games and thought I'll just load one of them where I have a lot of gold, go back to Deidre the merchant and if need be, sell some items to be able to buy the remaining Balduran items and I'll finally get this achievement. This is where it got more... interesting than I had anticipated!

I tried to load saved games from my first ever character to beat the entire Bhaalspawn saga, my paladin/cavalier. All of them crashed the game!

I tried to load saved games from my second character to beat the entire Bhaalspawn saga, my mage. All of them crashed the game!

I then realized that these old saved games are from the original edition (OE). I know that these old saved games used to load without any problems a few years back, so perhaps there was an update to BG2:EE along the way that made them incompatible. Since I've been using Linux as my daily driver for around a year and a half, could this have anything to do with these OE files being generated on the Windows version of the game? But my goal is to get this achievement, not to determine the causes of this or any particular glitches. So I tried an old saved game that I know for sure started as an EE character, my kensai. I finally get the remaining Balduran items, but my kensai can't wear the Plate of Balduran so I let Minsc equip all of the Balduran items and... the achievement doesn't happen.

Now I'm getting puzzled and annoyed. But before I give up and go back to continuing the adventures of my cleric and get this achievement at some point in her future, I look into the old saved games of my OE thief that became a swashbuckler. Apparently at some point, I "re-saved" some of them under EE so they loaded without a hitch and I more or less repeated what I did earlier with my kensai and thanks to his Use Any Item ability, my swashbuckler was able to equip all of the Balduran items and finally got this elusive achievement!

I'm sure I'm about to say stuff that some (veteran) players already know, but I'm going to say all of it for the benefit of any players that are trying to obtain this elusive achievement that, according to Steam, only 1.5% of players have(!):

  • After obtaining the Helm of Balduran (from the Master's Bedroom of Irenicus' Dungeon, of course), simply buying the remaining items from Deidre is not enough.
  • Your character, not a companion, must also equip all of them, which means you must be playing a warrior type, but not a kensai. But a thief with the Use Any Item ability, as I've described earlier, is clearly an exception to this.

In case the link becomes invalid (which can happen if this gun is actually bought by someone), here's the exact description from the web site (including typos!):

>This Chester County Armory listing is for an extremely rare Browning FN / Inglis Hi Power 9x19mm NATO fully transferable machine pistol.

>Once of only a few known examples on the NFA registry, this model was a Form 2 Registration by Hard Times Armory (which reportedly registered less than five examples). Originally made by Canadian arms maker John Inglis (with official licensing by FN) to help fulfill the various military contracts that were awarded by FN during World War II, this model was originally part of Inglis’s Chinese contract version, as it features a tangent rear sight and was designed to use a wooden holster that could be attached to the rear of the pistol and used as a shoulder stock. The Chinese had specifically requested this design change and adaptation, as they where looking for something to replace the Mauser C96 “broom handle” pistols that were popular there, and also utilized a removable wooden stock/holster.

>This transferable full-auto machine pistol is in excellent overall condition. Mechanically, this item runs flawlessly! The internal controls note only minor surface wear, and the original barrel rifling is still crisp and clean. The metalwork of the slide and frame are solid, with no cracks, dents, dings, malformations, or anything of operational concern. Cosmetically, the original finish is still in excellent condition, with only minor wear on the sharp edges, that has patinaed to an eye-pleasing metallic gray color at the contact points. The metal of the stock-attachment area in the rear of the pistol grip is sharp, and well-defined, with limited wear noted on the edges.

>This model also comes with an original, wartime-production wooden holster stock made by SA Limited (who was the original supplier of the Chinese contract stocks). This holster stock is in excellent condition, with only minor surface markings in the wood, and no cracks or any markings more than surface-deep noted. The metal lock-up mechanism is in excellent, fully-functional condition, with only very minor wear markings. The holster stock is stamped “SA.LTSD. 1944” by the attachment area and locks up very solid with little movement when installed on the machine pistol.

>Interestingly enough, this model has all matching “CH” noted serial numbers (frame, slide, and barrel) indicating it was intended for the Chinese contract, however it does not have any of the Chinese characters marked on the left side of the frame by the model number, indicating that it probably never made it into China.

>The flush-fitting magazine that is supplied with this weapon is an original magazine. It is “JI” marked on the front of the mag, also denoting production by John Inglis. Purchase of this machine pistol will also include an extended after-market 30rd magazine.

>This fully transferable full-auto machine pistol is currently on a Form 3 that lists “Form 2 Registration” as the manufacturer and “HP” as the model.
