Retaliation at new-ish position. Not sure if I should resign.

I have 3 years of experience in IT and am currently in a dual masters program in related fields.

My sister works in the same IT department as me (it’s a huuuuge department and she’s on another team at a different location) and is extremely well loved here. She helped refer me to this job. It is part-time, while I’m in school.

Well, since I started months ago my official manager has been notably absent. She doesn’t respond to most messages and when she reaches out it is because she started a fire we need to put out or wants to scold me for something. I’ve only seen her in person twice since I started. She didn’t even clear me officially for work until Sunday night before I was supposed to start work the next morning and expected that to be fine. She showed up 30 minutes late on my first day as well. Apart from briefly crossing paths with her one other time, I’ve never seen her since.

I spoke to others in my department, including the on-site supervisor at my work location who also answers to her and everyone echoes what I’ve been saying. No one who reports to her ever hears from her or sees her and she often goes offline or out of office without a word to anyone.

I spoke to the on-site supervisor and asked if it was safe to go to the director of our division to request a reporting change to him. I said I would frame it operationally due to our working together each day and he said it would probably be safe and a good idea. He said whatever happened I was a high performer and he would back me up.

So I did and I was SO professional. I was kind, compliment sandwiched, kept any feedback brief and extremely constructive and tactful. The director said she’d work to help me as much as possible and appreciated me speaking with her. It seemed to be a pleasant and effective conversation. She said it would stay anonymous and she wound be delicate.

Instead of helping me, she dragged my whole team and on-site supervisor into a clandestine meeting with my manager where she told my manager everything I said and they grilled my team about my performance. My team said only exceptionally good things. I clear tickets rapidly and am good with people.

Not only that, they weren’t even supposed to tell me this happened. The on-site supervisor called me on my personal number to relay this information. He said I can’t tell anyone he told me about it and we just have to keep our heads down and wait for this to blow over. He apologized for telling me this was a safe move. He said they need people like me who aren’t afraid to be honest and he wishes they could have me full-time.

Well now, I have received word from my team and on-site supervisor that I’m being moved to a new location and can’t work with the users at my current sites anymore. This location is still handled by the same on-site supervisor as my previous location so I’ll have some communication with him but no more face time with him or my team. It is confirmed they are not moving to fire me btw but I can tell they’re trying to make me miserable so I’ll leave on my own since they can’t prove my performance is poor.

His communication and my team’s communication has become very cold and clinical and much more condescending. I felt respected by them and I now feel ordered around. I know they are scared and feel the heat now and it’s probably not personal.

I feel like the sacrificial lamb. I’ve never worked in such a toxic place. I don’t need the money so I’m considering resigning but I’m told this director and my official manager have bad reputations in the department and many in leadership do not like how aggressive they are. So I’m hoping I will safely be able to move to a new division when the time comes without them being able to block me. My sister and her own manager said I’d be an asset to multiple divisions in the department and I just need to ride this out. That said, I’m not sure if I have it in me to stick this out.

But I’m just wondering if anyone has been through this before and if I should take any action other than just keeping quiet? It just seems tremendously unethical how everything has been handled so far.

Gentle honesty to my boss caused major retaliation
