Engineer didn’t fit my gas meter because of “health and safety”

Had a guy come and fit my new meter so I was compatible with the smart meter, didn’t electric fine, but when it came to gas, he said he couldn’t because my loft ladders weren’t affixed to the hatch, they were free standing

He then proceeded to climb up said ladder to stick his head up and take a picture of my boiler (in the loft)

He didn’t even need to access the boiler as far as I’m aware as the meter would have gone outside

Man’s just been playing with 240v and a gas main and he’s worried about a ladder, anyone else experienced this?

Any news/movement on RCS on the iPhone?

It’s been years, it’s 2026 why can’t an iPhone and an Android communicate via RCS if one of them is on Vodafone? Almost all the other major networks have it now, and even a lot of MVNOs have it, frankly it’s embarrassing and laughable

Would a human be useless as a transformation if an alien wore the Omnitrix?

We’re not as fast, strong, big, or smart as many aliens in the Omnitrix, if an alien wore the watch and transformed into a human, what would be the reason?

My only thought is it would be a transformation called “Jackovall” (pronounced Jack-of-all), a human at their peak would be decent but not fantastic speed (27.8mph), kind of strong, quite smart, be able to climb up vertical surfaces as long as they’re rough enough surface to grip.

Only issue is, if you excel in one you’ll be weakened in the others, if you’re strong, you’ll be heavy, that’ll impact your speed/climbing ability and you forfeit size, if you’re fast you forfeit weight/muscle density etc

The counter to that is, we have no glaring weaknesses beyond not being very good at anything compared to the Omnitrix aliens

We don’t really have any special abilities, so what would be the use of a human as a hero?

(Serious) Do you genuinely believe there’s a nefarious ulterior motive for the Under-16 Social Media Ban?

In a vacuum the under-16 Social Media ban is a good idea. As a child of the 2010s I’ve experience many instances about how these platforms harm children and many of my friends (now in their mid/late 20s) struggle with smartphone addiction/doomscrolling, so I’m all for this ban to ensure kids are safe, seen as the likes of Meta etc haven’t been pulling their weight to ensure child safety.

We all get outraged about Pedos but when the government actually does something to help with the issue and protect kids, everyone is up in arms.

The caveat is privacy, obviously this is a concern, having to supply your ID to presumably a 3rd party company to verify. I don’t like the idea this company may not be based in the UK, or at least the EU, and may sell the data or be hacked for it. Personally I’d much prefer this be done in-house, the government already know when I was born so there’s no extra data being transferred, just a thumbs up from them to say “yes this person is over 16” if they integrated it into Gov ID.

Obviously this isn’t iron-clad either, as every man and his dog has been saying, even if they don’t know what it is or stands for, all it takes is a VPN to bypass the restrictions. So what? If a teen wants alcohol they’ll obtain it somehow but it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be illegal for shops to sell it. The point is a reduction in usage, I don’t think anyone thinks it’ll be 100% effective.

What I think the tech-muggles are forgetting/not aware of is the following:

Your ISP and phone carrier already can see what you do on the internet, and law enforcement can and do look at this information if you were a suspect in a case. Both of these accounts are tied to your name/address and a debit/credit card.

Anonymity is not the argument you may think it is, on the face of it yes, you’re anonymous, but if push comes to shove unless you employ countermeasures, you’re not really anonymous. Law enforcement will find you if they want to

What’s your opinion of the ban/having to verify?

Would your opinion change if you had to verify via your Gov ID instead of a 3rd party?

Do you genuinely think this is some Emperor Palpatine-esque plot to diminish privacy? Or just an unfortunate side effect we have to deal with in order to protect kids

School IT Techs, how do you report damage?

I’ve been in a secondary school 12 weeks now, damage isn’t rampant, but today I caught a year 7 kid ragging a DP cable back and forth, I don’t usually talk to the children directly but after calling him out he said “I’m trying to get it to work”…sure bud

We rely on teachers reporting damage, but supply teachers don’t command the same control of the classes and don’t care about the classroom as much as the full-time teachers

We have cameras in the IT suites so we can see who incurred damage retroactively, but it’s not exactly a robust process

How do you go about keeping track of damage? I’ve come up with (but not deployed yet) a system that’ll open a prompt to report any damage to each system upon login but aside from that I’m at a loss

Any tips/tricks to reduce damage and/or get the kids to self report?

What’s your favourite in-universe explanation for an out-of-universe production issue/limitation?

Over the years Doctor Who has had a lot of issues with production whether it’s bad luck, budget etc.

It’s led to some interesting in-universe explanations, such as the obvious, the reason the Doctor never goes back to visit friends is because the actors don’t come back

Some personal favourites of mine is the long-standing “The Brigadier is stranded in Puru” to explain Nicholas Courtney’s absence

The 2nd Doctor arranging Jamie’s face incorrectly in the Mind Robber, and a different actor playing Jamie to cover Fraser Hines being ill

And the 200 Bus being torn open by the wormhole in Planet of the Dead, which wasn’t in the script, the bus just got wrecked on the way to Dubai so they had to write it into the script

I’m convinced the morning crawl through Armthorpe is caused by people stopping to let people out of side streets

Every morning outside the school holidays Nutwell lane, which is a 60 road, ends up being a 5mph crawl, and from observation it’s people stopping to let cars out of side streets, which then proceed to take shortcuts through the estates to avoid the queue.

I can’t fathom how drivers think this is ok, you’ve just sat for 5 minutes averaging 5mph, an endless stream of cars behind you, but yeah let this one guy out sure.

I’m convinced if no one stopped, there wouldn’t be a heavy stream of traffic, so the cars wanting to get out would have an easy time regardless

How important is fitness in your job?

I’ve been at my new post in a secondary school for 6 weeks now, and I’ve received many comments from the staff about how much more is getting done around the school.

I’ve never done desk-side support before, I’ve been SD, 2nd Line, SD Manager, and Jr Sys Admin, I’ve never done the physical side of IT.

I’m quite a slim guy, never worked out, already my partner has commented on my arms looking bigger, which I put down to carrying boxes/hardware around most days.

The guy I replaced was severely overweight, and from what I can tell, quite lazy in terms of attending jobs in a timely manor. A lot of what I would consider ‘small jobs would get saved for the holidays, whereas I’ll slip in between lessons or at break times to do little bits.

The desks in the computer suites have a trough for cable management, it’s all wooden and my boss (who is only on site once a week) said that my predecessor needed the site team to remove the cladding to get his arms in, whereas my ‘pixie wrists’ as he calls them, fit right through the gaps so I can reach cables without needed the entire suite dismantled.

Same for climbing up on worktops, being 65kg the side worktops can easily take my weight so reaching the network cabs is a non issue, again I can do any work involving that within a few minutes, apparently getting my predecessor up on a ladder was a constant battle.

The admin staff and exam officer commented on how they see me about more and have noted that they’d have to come to the IT office to speak help after sending a ticket, I never considered it was abnormal to just go and see them when they email and I’m not busy

It made me realise how general fitness can severely impact one’s effectiveness when you’re doing the physical side of this job, what I thought was doing the bare-minimum in terms of attending jobs in a timely manor and being able to carry out little fixes on-the-fly really opens my eyes on how important it is.
