My take on Regeneration after FAQ (Change my mind)

First of all, I'm trying to interpret the rules, not what I want, not what I think it should be played (rules as written, RAW). This is an effort to integrate all the rules and FAQs. Poke my argument, but based on rules and references, not with your free interpretation or wishes (quick block if you don't adhere to this).

*EDIT after debating with you guys added at the bottom. Don't get mad before reading the resolution (I actually changed my mind).

Starting with the easiest example a range unit shoots a unit of 3 trolls (3W each). The sequence by the rules is the following:

Rulebook, p. 136

  1. Choose Unit & Declare Target The active player chooses a unit in their army that is able to shoot. They then check the unit's range and line of sight to any potential targets before declaring its target.
  2. Roll To Hit The active player rolls To Hit for the shooting unit. Sometimes, not all models will be able to shoot, and of those that can, certain modifiers may need to be applied to their roll To Hit.
  3. Roll To Wound & Make Armour Saves For each successful roll To Hit, the player makes a roll To Wound. For each of these rolls that cause a wound, their opponent may be able to make an Armour Save roll.
  4. Remove Casualties & Make Panic Tests For each unsaved wound caused, the target unit loses one Wound*. Models reduced to zero Wounds are removed as casualties. If enough casualties are caused, the unit will have to take a Panic test.*

In 3 > Rolls to hit, wound and saving throws are taken (with the chance of rolling in batches). Once the saves are not successful they are realized as UNSAVED WOUNDS.

In 4 > Unsaved wounds are allocated to the unit and realized in to Lost Wounds

Example: the shooting generated 15 UNSAVED WOUNDS. Only 9 (3W per troll) can be lost, since you can not loose more W than a model have. (as in Rules page.143: A model cannot suffer more wounds that is in its profile. Should a model do so, it dies instantly and any excess wounds are wasted.)

So there are only 9 LOST WOUNDS (3 per troll).
Then REGENERATION triggers:

  • REGENERATION as modified in FAQ 1.5.2. Errata: Immediately after a Wound is lost*,* but before models with zero Wounds remaining are removed from play, a model with this special rule may make a 'Regeneration save' roll by rolling a D6 and comparing the result to its 'Regeneration value', shown in brackets after the name of this special rule (shown here as 'X+'). If the Regeneration save roll equals or exceeds the model's Regeneration value, the lost Wound is recovered, but is still counted for the purposes of calculating the combat result. Rules that affect armour values do not affect Regeneration values unless stated otherwise.

REGEN happens immediately after a WOUND IS LOST, not after an UNSAVED WOUND.

You roll total of 9 regens. The other 6 out of the 15 UNSAVED WOUNDS were never LOST WOUNDS. Not subject to regen. You roll the 9 sequentially and having in mind Rules page.102 - Multiple Wounds Models: Wounds are lost by a single model until its Wounds characteristic is reduced to zero. Wounds are then lost by the next model, and so on.

FAQ 1.5.3.
Q: Can a model make more Regen saves than it has Wounds remaining on its profile?

A:No, When a model makes a Regen saves, it makes one save for each Wound Lost.

This to me is just clarifying exactly that. The distinction between WOUND LOST and UNSAVED WOUNDS. You take regen saves only to WOUND LOSTS, and the max is how many wounds you have when the attack started.

Change my mind (based on rules and references).

EDIT:

CONCLUSION - My mistake was to include a rule that applies only to Multiple Wounds to 15 instances of single attacks in my example. RESOLUTION: I changed my mind.

SUMMARY AFTER DISCUSSION

For SHOOTING (single W attacks), 15 unsaved shots will generate 15 lost wounds in the 3 trolls (3W each), that would have to roll 15 regens one by one.

For SHOOTING with MULTIPLE WOUNDS weapons: If it was a cannonball (rolling a 6 in multiple wounds roll) to a single troll. 1 unsaved wound multiplied by 6. Only 3W can be lost (based on multiple wounds rule page 143), so cap at 3 lost wounds. You roll max 3 regens as by faq 1.5.3. clarification. Just need one successful Regen for the troll to be alive.

For COMBAT, if you consider single W attacks nothing changes. If your enemy succeeded with 15 unsaved wounds, you roll 15 Regens in your trolls.

For COMBAT with MULTIPLE WOUNDS weapons, you apply again a cap of the Regens you take. I.e. oger blade can farm only 3 CR killing a troll. A troll successfully Regen 1 of 3 Regens roll will be alive.

For COMBAT in a CHALLENGE against for example a treekin elder champion:

  • single W attacks - you roll as many Regens as unsaved wounds have been produced. CR is not capped to 3, it's capped to 3+5, due to overkill rule.
  • MW attacks - imagine a MW(4) weapon. You generate 4 unsaved wounds, but you can generate tops 3 lost wounds. Treekin rolls 3 regens. If the treekin elder rolls 1 out of the 3 Regens, the model survives. For CR, you apply overkill, so you farm 4 CR (capped to 3 + 5 for weapons with higher MW value).

Odds in gambling

Hi everyone,

I have learnt that the chance of an outcome when gambling is independent of the events that preceded them. For example, if you are gambling in roulette to black, it doesn't matter how many times red showed in the previous rounds. You don't have more chances of black to happen. However, this is really counterintuitive. Can someone explain to me why? Why is a bad idea to wait until red shows up a bunch of times in a row to bet to black? It looks to me that a string of more than 6 or 7 or 8 times of red is low probability.

I hope I explained my mind all right.

Cheers,
