why are there so many schizo fantasies out there about human trafficking? years ago, there was one making the rounds where finding a shopping cart behind your car in the Walmart parking lot meant you were going to "get human trafficked." then i just read another thing about a rubber duck being left on someone's car meaning the same thing.

i investigate this stuff for a living and 99.99% of human trafficking looks like "come with me to x country and make money to support your family or pay off x debt." then they take your passport and force you to work for free. it's not "being disappeared" and raped and cannibalized in a new-world-order-looking epstein bunker or whatever.

i think people who are too isolated and comfortable crave drama and subjugation. there’s something very self-centered about the parking lot version. it centers the fear on people who are statistically very safe, while the actual victims (undocumented farmworkers, women from desperately poor countries, runaway kids) are irrelevant. the facebook post gets 300,000 shares and the H-2A farm worker who can’t leave is forgotten. i don't think they'd even recognize it as trafficking.
