Could you tell me why the irregularities on this object are increasing at the top and bottom, rather than being uniformly distributed like on the rest of the sphere? (blender)

How I made this object: I created a sphere, scaled it up a bit using proportional editing in random mode, which created some irregularities, and then smoothed it all out using the subdivision surface modifier.

This shot is still one of my favorite FX by Damien Lagadeuc. I really love the smooth motion of the smoke in the night sequence. All the FX were created in Houdini and rendered in Solaris with Arnold.
