What if Godzilla vs Kong followed up on KOTM’s set-up?
As most of you may know, the end credits montage and post-credits scene for Godzilla: King of the Monsters seemed to be setting up a far different version of Godzilla vs Kong than what we actually ended up getting. The news snippets from the film’s end credits montage indicated that the Titans were heading to Skull Island for some unexplained reason with this potentially being the trigger for Godzilla and Kong’s conflict within the film. Even more important was the post-credits scene where Alan Jonah purchased the final remaining Ghidorah head which seemed to be setting him up as the main villain. However, due to KOTM being a financial disappointment, Legendary pivoted to the GvK plot we actually ended up getting.
But these ideas have always intrigued me and so I wanted to ask: What if Godzilla vs Kong had followed up on KOTM’s set up?
While what specifically might have happened would’ve been ambiguous, I have two ideas for what this version of the film might’ve looked like.
- More of the KOTM cast would’ve been present. We know Ilene Chen’s actress was initially set to return but didn’t likely due to schedule restrictions. Perhaps she and other KOTM characters would’ve shown up.
- Mechagodzilla wouldn’t exist as the antagonist to unify Godzilla and Kong since I don’t think Jonah’s group would have the resources to make such a machine. With the Ghidorah head tease at the end of the film, I feel like some version of Ghidorah would have served as the antagonist instead. Whether that would be a new version or a reuse of an older iteration like Desghidorah or Keizer Ghidorah, I’ll leave up to you.
