Scratchbuilt Ork Kanz Dop Pod

Based on the Epicast Kanz drop pod.

Made from a can, the top of a bottle, a bottle lid, a wooden disc, thin packaging card, Graphix medium chipboard, a wooden disc, EVA foam, a cog, a hemispherical bead, sharp and fine sand.

2nd Edition grot for scale.

Scratchbuilt Squig Catapult

After hearing about the WH40K squig catapult, I found three variations of it. One is definitely Epic, another probably is but I only found a single image of it, and the third is Rogue Trader era and made of metal. An unboxing vide allowed me to get the sizes about right.

This is made from Graphix medium chipboard, used for the main body as I needed the strength, thick packaging card, thin packaging card, square and round wooden dowel, packaging tape, two sizes of hemispherical beads, a cog, cocktail stick, string and a thimble.

The white squig is a placeholder made from plasticine; the red one is one made from foil, cocktail sticks and Das clay. And looks like it came from Angry Birds.

Artillery Proxy?

I actually bought this from Poundland for bits - 80 for £2 - but it can be made into models; the cover tank, this artillery piece with a host of leftovers including some decent weapons and a boat.

Although I bought it for parts, it looks like it could make decent proxies for ork and Guard artillery pieces, so I thought I'd share. 2nd Edition grot for scale.

Scratchbuilt Epicast Ork Kanz Style Drop Pod

This is based on the old Epicast drop pod. Made from a can (of course!), the top part of a bottle, a bottle lid, a wooden disc, thin packaging card, Graphix medium chipboard, EVA foam, a cog, a hemispherical bead, sharp and fine sand.

The next one I may look into adding more colour to the larger areas, if I can get it to work right (cheap craft paints are rather thick and gloopy for what I want to do, and water doesn't seem the best way of diluting them), as even by the standards of my orks, this thing's a rustbucket.

Ork Jetbike Prototype

Prototype for an ork jetbike. It's on a base that means it's the right size to use as a warbike or deffkopta proxy.

The main body is a Yakult bottle, along with a lid, EVA foam, Graphix medium chipboard, thin packaging card, thick packaging card, a superglue nozzle cleaner, hemispherical bead, wooden beads, felt tip pen parts, wooden dowel, spray bottle tube, straw, cocktail stick, solder, armature wire and magnets.

Squig Catapult - Now With Upgraded Squig

I made a new squig for the catapult. This one is made from Das air dry clay, foil and toothpicks.

It's a bit on the large size I think. I used Das because I have it, it's cheap if I mess it up, I haven't tried much sculpting with anything yet and if I can get something halfway decent with Das I should be able to get something better with better materials.

Cheap acrylic paints are possibly not the best for miniatures, but okay for this. I should have used something less yellow for the teeth.

Squig Catapult

A comment by LethalGopher led me to the squig catapult. I found three versions; a common Epic one, a very uncommon Epic one (I think I've only found two images of it) and a Rogue Trader era one. This is based on that last, because I found an unboxing video that made it easier to get the size about right. There's a 2nd Edition grot for scale.

It's made primarily from Graphix medium chipboard - I needed the strength given the small size and it was very fiddly - thick packaging card, thin packaging card, square and round wooden dowel, string, cocktail stick, some packing tape, a cog, two sizes of hemispherical nail beads and a thimble.

The squig in the first image is a placeholder made from plasticine...

Gobsmasha

Gobsmasha, based on the White Dwarf instructions and the Epicast model. Made from vitamin bottle, vitamin bottle lids, kitchen foil tube, single corrugated card, Graphix medium chipboard, thick packaging card, thin packaging card, EVA foam, straws, wooden dowel, paper and bamboo skewer.

Supa-Gobsmasha?

Okay, this idea is so ridiculous that it seems very orky. Building a tank with a Pringles tin cannon.

I admit I'm tempted to make this, albeit not with the tubs currently being used as the body and wheels; something bigger for the body but perhaps wheels made from lids of those other containers with cardboard sandwiched between them.

Not sure what it could be run as. Maybe a stompa or gargant?

Prototype of an Ork Jetbike

First attempt at an ork jetbike. Made from a Yakult bottle, a lid, EVA foam, Graphix medium chipboard, thin packaging card, thick packaging card, a superglue nozzle cleaner, hemispherical bead, wooden beads, felt tip pen parts, wooden dowel, spray bottle tube, straw, cocktail stick, solder, armature wire and magnets.

Gluing the rear flaps to the nozzle clearer to add strength to them made it very difficult to paint and lost some detail, so the next attempt will be modified to have them further out.

Given the base size, it could function as a deffkopta or warbike proxy.

Grot Rok that's "Landed"

Grot rok that's hit the ground. Made from foamboard, envelopes, kitchen roll, a polystyrene sphere, Graphix medium chipboard, filler, bamboo skewers, wire, card, corrugated paper, straws, EVA foam and lids.

I'm not completely happy with how this one turned out, especially the base.

Gobsmasha

Inspired by RedstoneTF, I got distracted from what I was doing and instead built my own Gobsmasha.

It's based on a combination of the White Dwarf article and the Epicast Gobsmasha I believe, but the gun was too weedy, so I bulked it up (okay, built it from what I had to hand).

Views of it painted and at various stages. It's made from single corrugated card, Graphix medium chipboard, thick packaging card, thin packaging card, EVA foam, paper, bamboo skewer, cocktail stick, paper straws, filler, wooden dowel, a vitamin bottle, foil tube and four lids from the same type of vitamin bottle.

The wheels were a tad problematic; one came off during painting or, rather, had the backing come off it. They are the lids with card stuck to the back, which is a very thin bond. Next time, I may add the backing after the EVA foam, which will give more surface area for the bond.

I did try something different with the green paint, layering up three shades, but this didn't seem to accomplish anything other than result in a lighter green. Perhaps more experimentation (and better paint) is needed.

There are blank spots on both sides, which, as the Gobsmasha can have two other weapons, may have them put there, once I work out what to do for them. This will be an easy enough aftermarket addition.

"Landed" Grot Rok

A small rok, suitable for grots, that has landed (crashed). It's made from a polystyrene ball, paper, filler, foamboard, kitchen paper, lids, straws, EVA foam, corrugated card, Graphix medium chipboard, cardboard, wire and kitchen paper.

I'm not completely happy with how this first one turned out.

Grot Jet Launcher

Based on some bomb squig proxies I made, I also made a little launcher vehicle for my grotjets. I'm not sure if I'm going to take the launcher concept any further, but the tracked vehicle bases could be used for other things.

I'm not entirely happy with how this turned out; the base isn't great. I plan to make a flying one which will be mostly similar, but will need a decent circular base, probably wood, to make it work.

Bomb Squig Proxies

I was watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSSGBm4jruk&t=346s and there are these four little tracked vehicles being used as proxies for bomb squigs. I thought they looked 3D printed (they're actually resin cast; after starting them I discovered they are Goliath Mines from Kromlech) and decided to have a go at making some from cheaper materials.

Materials used are wood (the core of three of them), single corrugated cardboard (the core of the fourth), thick food packaging card, thin food packaging card, Graphix medium chipboard, EVA foam, spray bottle tube, cocktail sticks, bamboo skewer, paper, wooden beads, twine, thin wire and paper clip wire.

The first four images show all four from different angles, then made, primed and painted images of the first I did, as it was easier painting it in pieces, and finally it assembled from two angles.

They're about 25mm square so will, just about, fit on a 25mm base. I think they're a little smaller than Kromlech's.

Mobile Grotjet Launcher

Mobile launcher for my grotjets, made in the same manner as the bomb squig proxies. I don't know if I'm going to take this any further, but I do have some different ideas for using with the same mini tracked vehicles.

Bomb Squig Proxy Has Friends

My original one now has three friends. The mini bombs are made from wooden beads, cocktail sticks and fine wire, the dynamite is made from cocktail sticks, string and fine wire and the stick bombs are made from cocktail sticks, paper and cardboard.

I had originally intended to tie some of them down, but I wasn't hugely happy with the string in the first and the chain which I had originally intended to use appears to be made from adamantium, it's so hard to cut, and very shiny, which I'm experimenting with. I may revisit chains later.

After seeing a similar thing made primarily using the Stormboyz kit, I had a go at making my own from basically junk. Photos show all the finished models, then the first in made, partially and fully painted from several angles, then the magnetic posable flight stand.

The grotjets are made from a combination of primarily paper, paper straw, Graphix medium chipboard, thin card/thick paper, bamboo skewer, a magnet and a lid from a mini soy sauce bottle. Depending on the model, also used were guns clipped from cheap army men, tube from disposable mechanical pencils, tube from a spray bottle, cocktail sticks and a hemispherical bead.

The stands are made from 32mm bases (so they could be used as Stromboyz proxies), armature wire, heat shrink tubing, paper, a magnet, limestone chippings, sharp sand and, underneath, metal pellets from a broken ankle weight to add more weight to the base.

▲ 25 r/orks

In this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSSGBm4jruk are some little tracked vehicles being used as bomb squig proxies. I thought I would have a go at making some; they looked to be 3D printed and it turns out they are, Kromlech Ork Goliath Mines.

This is my first prototype, showing it finished from two angles, as well as made but not assembled, then primed with Mod Podge/black paint and painted prior to assembly.

Used in this were wood, two thicknesses of packaging card, Graphix medium chipboard, bamboo skewer, wooden bead, paperclip wire, EVA foam, string and a piece of spray bottle tube.

I think this is slightly smaller than Kromlech's, as it's25mm square whilst Kromlech's look to be about 32mm.
