Cossack hat and PMR stamps on Republic Day?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be visiting Tiraspol for Republic Day on 2 September and was wondering about a couple of souvenirs I’m hoping to find.

Is it possible to buy a Cossack hat (papakha) from any of the stalls or vendors that are usually set up in the city during the public celebrations? I’d particularly like to find one locally rather than ordering one online.

I’m also interested in PMR postage stamps. Are these normally available from any of the Republic Day stalls, souvenir sellers, or perhaps directly from a post office in Tiraspol?

If anyone knows particular places I should try, I’d be very grateful for any recommendations.

Спасибо большое! Looking forward to visiting the PMR.

Orthodox churches

Hi everyone,

I’ll be visiting the **Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR)** soon and I’m particularly interested in Orthodox churches and religious culture.

For those who know the area well:

**1. Which Orthodox church in the PMR would you most recommend visiting?**

I’m especially interested in somewhere with a beautiful or atmospheric interior, interesting icons, or a strong sense of local religious life rather than simply the largest church.

**2. Where is the best place to buy Orthodox souvenirs?**

I’m looking for things such as **icons, prayer ropes (чётки), small crosses, medals, prayer cards, candles or other locally available Orthodox items**. Ideally I’d prefer to buy from a church, monastery or proper church shop rather than a general souvenir stall.

I’ll be spending time in **Tiraspol and Bender/Bendery**, so recommendations in either city—or somewhere nearby—would be very welcome.

If there is a particular church that you think is an absolute must-see, I’d love to hear why.

Miniature Suvorov Monument in Tiraspol?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be visiting the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic soon and I absolutely love the Suvorov Monument in Tiraspol — it’s probably one of the souvenirs I’d most like to bring home in miniature form.

Does anyone know whether it’s possible to buy a small replica / statuette / desk-sized model of the Suvorov Monument, ideally actually in Tiraspol?

I’d be interested in anything from a proper metal statuette to a small resin or souvenir version. Antique shops, souvenir shops, museum shops, markets or even local sellers would all be of interest.

If anyone has actually seen one for sale, I’d really appreciate knowing where.

Thanks!

Republic Day 2 September — Honour Guard / Plaza Performance?

Hi everyone/Всем привет!

I’ll be visiting the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic for Republic Day on 2 September.

I understand that the full military parade is currently uncertain, so I’m particularly interested in the Honour Guard Company (Рота почётного караула).

In previous years there has been a ceremonial presence at the Memorial of Glory, as well as an Honour Guard / military band plaza performance (плац-парад) in central Tiraspol.

For anyone in Tiraspol or familiar with this year’s preparations: is there any local indication that the Honour Guard performance will take place again on 2 September 2026?

Have there been rehearsals, preparations, rumours, or anything being discussed locally?

I realise the official programme may not be published until quite close to Republic Day, so I’m equally interested in informed local impressions rather than only official confirmation.

Many thanks — I’m very much looking forward to visiting.

Resurrection has unexpectedly become my favourite Tolstoy novel by far

A caveat before anything else: I haven’t quite finished it yet. I’m very close—Nekhlyudov is about to follow the penal convoy—so please avoid spoilers beyond that point.

I went into Resurrection aware that it tends to receive rather mixed reviews, particularly compared with Tolstoy’s better-known novels. The criticism I encountered most often was that it becomes too morally didactic or that Tolstoy’s preaching overwhelms the story.

Perhaps that will become more pronounced in the remaining pages, but so far it hasn’t bothered me at all. In fact, Resurrection has turned out to be my favourite Tolstoy novel by quite some distance.

What has impressed me most is how extraordinarily relatable many of Tolstoy’s observations remain. His treatment of self-deception, guilt, respectability and the ease with which people accept cruelty once it has been absorbed into institutions feels incredibly sharp.

Nekhlyudov’s habit of recognising an uncomfortable truth, resolving to change and then finding himself pulled back towards comfort and convention feels painfully human.

Even the supposedly “preachy” passages have generally felt earned to me because they arise from what Nekhlyudov is witnessing and from Tolstoy’s anger at a system that allows everyone to disclaim personal responsibility.

I’m curious whether others found the moral argument intrusive, or whether Resurrection is simply underrated because it is judged against War and Peace and Anna Karenina rather than on its own terms.

Best places to find unusual and interesting souvenirs in the PMR?

I’ll be visiting the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic around Republic Day in September and would love some recommendations for souvenir shopping.

I’m particularly interested in things beyond the usual magnets and keyrings—PMR memorabilia, composite coins, badges and pins, old postcards, books, Soviet-era items, Suvorov souvenirs, small busts or plaques, local crafts and anything especially unusual or distinctive.

Are there any good antique shops, markets, museum shops or particular sellers in Tiraspol or Bender that you would recommend? Do special souvenir stalls normally appear during the Republic Day celebrations?

Shop names, locations and opening times would be greatly appreciated. I’d also be interested to know whether these places normally accept cards or require local cash.

Thank you!

Republic Day

Hello everyone!

I’m visiting the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic for Republic Day on 2 September and I’m really looking forward to experiencing the celebrations.

I know that official information can sometimes appear quite close to the event, but I was wondering what the general feeling is locally.

What is the word on the street? Do people in Tiraspol expect the military parade to go ahead as normal this year? Have you heard anything about changes, cancellations, or a reduced format?
I’m interested in local opinion and rumours as well as official information.

Thank you very much for any insights, and I’m looking forward to visiting your country!

Just finished We by Yevgeny Zamyatin – curious to hear others’ thoughts

I’ve just finished We and I’m surprised by how modern it still feels. I went in expecting it to be interesting mainly from a historical perspective, but I found it genuinely unsettling and experimental in its own right.

The image of a society built around absolute logic, transparency and mathematical certainty has stayed with me, and D-503’s gradual psychological unravelling was fascinating to read. I could also see how much influence the novel had on later dystopian fiction like Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four, while still feeling very different from both.

A few questions for those who know Zamyatin better:
How is We regarded in Russia today? Is it widely read or is it more of a niche classic?

Do you think We is the greatest Russian dystopian novel, or would you recommend another?

Finally, if I enjoyed We, what should I read next? I’m already a fan of Russian literature in general (Tolstoy, Pushkin and Dostoevsky), but I’m especially interested in early Soviet or Silver Age works with a similar atmosphere.

I’d love to hear your recommendations and interpretations.

Republic Day

Hello everyone,

I’ll be visiting the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic for the first time at the end of August and will be in Tiraspol for Republic Day on 2 September. One of the main reasons for my trip is to experience the Republic Day celebrations and, if it takes place, the military parade.

I’ve been trying to find reliable information, but I’ve come across a lot of conflicting or outdated reports from previous years.

Has there been any official announcement yet about this year’s Republic Day programme? In particular, does anyone know whether a military parade is expected, or whether the celebrations will take a different format this year?

I’d be very grateful for any information from local residents or anyone with up-to-date knowledge. Even if nothing has been announced yet, I’d appreciate knowing when the programme is usually published.

Thank you very much in advance. I’m really looking
forward to visiting the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, seeing Tiraspol, learning more about its history and culture, and experiencing the Republic Day celebrations.
