Strange dude at Hiwa

Wasn’t gonna bring it up, but it’s been bugging me.

Was on the machines today on lvl 1, and there were two young women on the bikes with an empty bike between them at one end. Nothing unusual, they weren’t together, cool.

There were 5-6 bikes free on the other side of these two girls, but this older guy (50s-60s), chose to use the empty bike between these two girls. I’m thinking okaaaay, maybe he always uses that specific bike regardless if there are people next to it or not.

But then he kept looking over at both of these girls. I couldn’t tell if he was looking at their phones or their face. But it damn well looked like he was staring holes into their soul, and he’d stare at them for minutes, switching between them. At some point he ended up focusing on the bike or whatever. But when one of the girls finished their workout, the dude LITERALLY watched her while she was wiping down the machine, and then when she walked off he was still tracking her. I felt for them both cos it was giving off pervy energy. I didn’t wanna interrupt their workout, but I was ready to pounce if he tried anything cos fk that. My older sister energy kicked in as soon as he walked over to that bike.

He finished on the bikes, and while going from the bikes to the other side of the floor, no shit, this guy scanned the women up and down that were on the treadmills. I couldn’t believe my phuqing 👀.

But yeah, thought I’d put this here cos I feel bad for not interfering earlier, or asking if you two were alright. It’s probably not as serious as I thought, but you never know with the amount of cray-crays out there these days.

Stay alert and don’t feel bad or embarrassed if you’re in a similar situation and you want to move to another bike or machine away from them. You should feel comfortable when you workout, so do you and dgaf if others feel bad that you moved.

Lost my headphones yesterday

Fat chance they’ll be returned, but misplaced my Sony WH-1000XM4s yesterday either at Hiwa or somewhere on Wellesley St walking down the hill by the UoA Science building. If anybody’s picked them up, holler out pls. Got $50 with your name on it if they’re returned. Cheers.

Not the #1 University in NZ.

I will preface with technically they are, obviously. But mainly for their research.

When it comes to Enrolments, Student Hubs, Support, and overall design of coursework and Canvas, UoA = shite.

If you need to go to UoA because they offer a specific programme you want to take, then by all means and I hope your ride is smooth.

But if you can take your programme at another NZ university then I’d suggest you do that.

- Auckland rent/dorm prices suck
- General cost of living too expensive
- Student Hubs are mid at best, and it would take contacting 3-4 people for them to help with your query if it’s a bit of a tough one. They made an error and enrolled me in a class I wanted yes, but this inadvertently dropped one of my other compulsory classes. Now I’m waiting to see if I can be reinstated into that course ffs. I applied for this course in the middle of sem 1. UoA really out here playing hot potato with my heart rate.
- It takes so long to get an answer back from a lecturer or course coordinator when you have a simple question.
- Library needs more seating. And the upper floors are so rundown. Needs a LOT of TLC.
- KEIC study floors need tighter policies with the amount of students leaving their sh1t sprawled over desks for hours.
- The classrooms I was in are also freezing, I have three layers on but the chill finds a way.
- One of my classes last sem had an issue with test questions. In short, the lecturer gave questions outside the scope of what we were learning and justified the difficult questions to ‘well, your next courses will be much more difficult. So you might as well start practicing difficult tests now.’ Didn’t see her again after mid semester break. We got a new lecturer.

Just, take caution in considering ALL options before committing to UoA. Go to Waikato Uni, Massey, AUT, MIT, UC or anywhere else if you can. UoA isn’t as prestigious as they advertise. Only for research purposes and Phds.

Edit: This post is for students who care about the experience, actual in-class education and services offered at UoA. Not the potential prospect of being favoured by future employers because UoA is on your resume.

Those of you pursuing UoA for their name and clout, all the best to you. Those who genuinely want to enjoy their time at Uni, get services and facilities worth paying for, and a world class education from great lecturers, take this into consideration. I’m not being a dick, just advice for those who aren’t 100% sure about UoA.
