This was my final practice session before heading to Alaska.

The hummingbirds definitely made me work for it. They were incredibly erratic, and if I zoomed in any farther, I’d lose them in the viewfinder before I could lock focus. The strong backlighting added another layer of difficulty, but that’s all part of the learning process.

A huge thank you to everyone who shared tips and sent encouraging DMs. Your advice has been incredibly helpful as I continue learning.

Now it’s time for Alaska. Wish me luck!

First attempt with birds

I learned quite a bit with these birds. Biggest takeaway is increasing shutter speed. I also shot them too wide and as I cropped, I lost too much resolution.

New lens. Hoping this will keep from spooking wildlife and a safe distance! 🤣 I can’t wait to stretch this out in AK!

Getting used to the difference in range from the Sony kit lens. I also tried out a cp due to harsh lighting on the river. I don’t think it helped me. Too many new variables and I haven’t mastered the basics. I ended up spending more time in post.

Enjoying a little sun… caught this as I was walking to my car.

This is a beautiful moment I captured while guiding. To freeze that brief time for this father wand son to cherish was awesome. I just got the Tamron 17-70 to upgrade from the kit lens. I was’t use to the limited reach. It was a good exercise though to find out its range though.

Being a fly fishing guide is finding peace through chaos. I am watching both anglers, giving tips on their cast, watching how they are fishing the fly, pointing out likely high pay off spots and of course keeping the boat on track and safe.

When an angler’s line tightens, I’m doing my best to keep them calm so they can finally do a quick grip and grin. I have taken tons of pictures with my iPhone. It started to become routine. I needed a new challenge. So here I am. This picture is more of what I will be trying to capture. My goal is to give folks a reminder of an awesome day on the river.

Thanks for the feedback from the last picture. It really helps. Any critique whether it’s stylized or fundamentals are appreciated. I love walking around the yard looking for things that might make a great picture.

Just got my first grown up camera.

18-135mm kit lens. I have taken all my photos in the past with my iPhone and touched them up in LR. Shoot RAW is a whole different level.
