Sony A6700 + Sony 70-350mm lens for birdwatching

I’d been on the fence about this lens for a while and when i saw it in amazon prime week, I bit the bullet and i’m SO glad I did.

Have mostly been using it for birdwatching and I feel like i’m finally testing the capabilities of the A6700’s bird eye tracking, and it’s just brilliant. I couldn’t recommend it more and just wish I’d have got it sooner tbh.

Just wondering if anyone had any tips for using it in low light? I took it out to photograph some owls the other day and it struggled a little bit.

Need advice: A6700 or FX30 for a hybrid shooter turning professional?

I've already watched a lot of reviews and asked many of my friends who work in the industry. I've also been in the creative field for a long time, and I've spent a good amount of time using the Sony A6400, A6700, and ZV-E1. However, I'm now planning to start working professionally. Although I have experience using these cameras, I haven't personally owned one or used one extensively for my own work.

I'm fully committed to my art, but since I'll be buying my first camera, my initial goal is to take on any kind of work I can get. I want to recover my investment, build connections, and gain experience. Once I'm financially stable, I want to focus more on creating meaningful art rather than just delivering work for clients.

I already love photography, but I'm equally passionate about cinematography. That's exactly why I'm so confused about whether I should buy the Sony A6700 or the FX30. I'll be working as both a photographer and a videographer, and I don't want to compromise on my photography.

The FX30 seems like a more professional tool and might leave a stronger impression on clients, but I also believe my skills would allow me to produce great work with the A6700. At the same time, the A6700 would let me continue pursuing photography without giving anything up.

So I'd really appreciate advice from people who actually own one of these cameras or have used both extensively. If you were in my position, which one would you choose, and why? Your experience would genuinely help me make the right decision.

A6700 successor

Do we have any idea or possible news on the successor of the a6700? I want to make a YouTube documentary over the summer. However, I’m worried about getting a camera and then a few months later the price drops or the updated version comes out. What would you guys recommend? This would be my first upgrade since the a6000. Any help would be appreciated! I’m on the college student budget and want to make sure I’m spending my money wisely. I’m a hybrid shooter also.

Butterfly shot — only the face is in focus, rest is soft. How to nail focus better next time?

Shot with Sony A6700 + Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. The butterfly's face/eyes came out sharp but the wings and body fell out of focus — I think it's a depth of field issue at close range. Looking for tips on:

Aperture/distance tradeoffs for insect shots

Manual focus techniques (peaking, magnification) for skittish subjects

Any composition tricks to keep more of the subject in focus without losing background separation

Appreciate any feedback!

Sell Tamron 17-70 for Sony 16-55 or Sigma 18-50?

I have Sony a6700 and use it with the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 for both photography and videography. I love the lens for photos but my handheld footages seem very shaky despite all my attempts to steady it with my hands. I guess the rumors about Tamron’s VC fighting Sony IBIS is true. But I think shutting down the a6700’s IBIS (standard/active) really takes away one of the best features that made this camera so great among the APS-Cs.

If you were in my shoes, would you sell the tamron and pay extra for Sony 16-55mm f/2.8 G? Or get the Sigma 18-50mm? Or would you just continue to keep the Tamron, shoot with steady cam mode off, and use gyroflow/warp stabilization?

While Sigma seems appealing (since it’s cheaper and lighter/smaller), I’m wondering if I should just go with the Sony native for fool-proof integration between the lens and my a6700.

Viltrox 56mm f/1.2 Pro – Loud internal movement when camera is off. Normal or defective?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a new Viltrox 56mm f/1.2 Pro for my Sony A6700. When the lens is not powered, there is a large amount of movement inside. It feels like an internal lens element is completely loose and makes a pretty loud knocking sound when I gently tilt or move the lens.

As soon as I mount it on the camera and turn it on, the movement stops completely.

What makes me concerned is that I also own the Viltrox 75mm f/1.2 Pro from the same Pro series, and it doesn’t have this behavior at all. There is no noticeable internal movement or knocking sound when it’s off..

Has anyone else with the 56mm f/1.2 Pro experienced this? Is this normal for this lens, or should I request a replacement?

New a6700 screen/hinge tilted?

Instantly saw it straight out of the box. Its noticable and distracting while shooting.

Got it from Adorama online. Any advice or experience exchanging through them? Or do I deal with it for the next 10+ years? :(

My first month with the a6700

Here's just a small folder of pictures I've taken since June 2nd. It has been a real fun journey of discovery, walking over 80 miles to try and get pictures, and of learning the ins and outs of the technical aspects of shooting as well as slowing down and paying attention to composition and framing.

Of course, I am SO lucky to live where I do, as almost all of these pictures were taken within 25 minutes of my house, with one drive that was more like 50 minutes. The abundance of wildlife here is staggering.

Anything close up was the 70-350. Wider shots were mostly the Sony 16-55, and I believe the sunset pic was the 11mm 1.8.

Sigma 18-50mm + prime lens, or Sigma 17-40mm. About the same price, do I get the combo or just single Art lens?

LCD dims when turned to shoot in vertical mode - A6700

Hey guys, I have an A6700 and when I shoot outside in the sunlight and I turn the camera to shoot vertical, the lcd dims suuuper low. When I turn it back horizontal it goes back to normal.

When I use the viewfinder and shoot vertical there’s no problem. Has this happened to any of you? And if so, any ideas for a solution??

I have a small suspicion it may be from the heat but I can be wrong about that. Please help!

Has anyone tried the (full frame) Viltrox 85mm f/2.0 EVO on APS-C?

Just wondering if anyone has tried the (full frame) Viltrox 85mm f/2.0 EVO on APS-C? I'm aware this would give a 135mm full-frame equivalent field of view on APS-C, also that there now exists a Viltrox 90mm f/2.2 lens for APS-C - but the 85mm is cheaper, gets great reviews, is about the same size/weight and if I ever get a full frame body, could be used on that too. I don't mind about focus breathing, as would only be using it for stills photography.

Looking for feedback on probably my best picture

This is probably my best photograph in the past year I've been doing this as a hobby and looking for feedback. I shot this in a pretty dark sunset setting and had to bump up the iso quite high.

Equipment: Sony A6700 and the Sony 70-350.
Settings used: 1/1000s, f/6.3, 12,800
Edited using Photolab 9.
