International Music Day question: when was the best era for music? Or is it right now?

I saw it was International Music Day, and it got me talking with my buddies about when the best time for music actually was. The Beatles in the 60s? MJ and Prince in the 80s? Is it now, because the technology is better? Or will "back then" always win because the music was more raw?

At first I kept coming back to right now being the best time to be a working musician. You can record by yourself, put it in front of the right people, and if the algorithm catches it, you blow up overnight.

But is the quality still there? Does it connect the same way? There's more music than ever, and it's harder and harder to get anyone to actually listen.

So where do I land? I think there was a golden era, and it's the 50s through the 70s. Not because nothing good has come out since, but because so much of what music is today was shaped back then.

Thoughts?

Welcome to BandOps 🎸

This is a space for people who play in bands, and everything that comes with it. Booking gigs, splitting pay, the bandmate who's always late, the setlist fight, the show that went sideways, the one that made it all worth it.

Ask questions, share what's working, vent when you need to. Whether you've been gigging for 20 years or just played your first open mic, you belong here.

The vibe: a little old school, with some new-age humor. Make the joke, but be ready to defend it. Hot takes are welcome. Being a jerk isn't.

We're just getting started, so jump in, introduce yourself, and tell us about your band. Stay a while :)

I built BandTopia for my own cover band. Looking for feedback from other bandleaders.

I sing lead and play acoustic guitar in Midnight Rodeo, a country cover band out of Kansas City. I’ve also spent 25+ years in software engineering, so eventually I put the two together.

We were juggling group texts, calendars, and spreadsheets to keep gigs organized and everyone paid. I built BandTopia to bring that information together, and we now use it to run our band.

It covers scheduling, messaging, setlists and chord charts, plus booking and finances. There’s a free tier with the calendar, messaging, setlists, and EPK. Booking and finance tools are on Pro.

I know another app only helps if your band actually uses it. That’s what I’d like feedback on: what would make getting your band set up worth the effort, and what would stop you?

I’m the founder, and I’ll be here to answer questions. If you try it and something’s confusing, tell me where you got stuck.
