Episode 25 - The Stage

Recap: Xiao Wuyi and Xie Jiayu set out to save the Xiao family from execution, but everything immediately goes off the rails. Jiayu is taken by Li Mao, Wuyi is captured by the Eagle King, and it looks like the entire rescue mission has failed. Except… It was all staged! Wuyi and Mao planned the entire “fallout” to deceive Head Eunuch Feng An, who is secretly a Northern Qin spy. Their goal: to make the Eagle King believe his scheme to sow internal discord in Southern Ye was succeeding. The Eagle King, convinced he’s a genius, tries to persuade Wuyi to join him in taking down both empires.  

And the Oscar goes to… Li Mao!

The whiplash this man delivers. Even Jiayu couldn’t see through him. But the bromance is back! This is me NOT complaining. 

This whole thing was a scheme aimed at the Eagle King.

But… did they really sacrifice all those imperial guards and shadow envoys in the process?

Forgive me for giving up on you, Mao. Is it too late to come back? Good for you, u/-tether-, for holding onto hope I had already abandoned.

Honestly, the conversation with the miracle doctor was sus, and the Xiao family being that silent on the execution ground should’ve been a giant neon sign.

Wuyi deserves an Oscar too. Did nobles take mandatory acting classes in Ancient China?

Wuyi, choosing martyrdom

Wuyi explains everything in his letter to Jiayu — the staged betrayal, the fake fallout between ruler and subject, and why he kept her out of the plan. Jiayu is (very reasonably) furious and is now determined to figure out how to bury “the bastard,” per iQIYI’s translation.

Northern Qin starts cracking

Wuyi’s capture immediately exposes fractures within Northern Qin.

The Emperor’s uncle rushes out an imperial edict demanding Wuyi be brought to the capital because they’re terrified that Wuyi might join forces with the Eagle King and snatch the throne.

Meanwhile, the Eagle King gets arrogant, bragging about his palace spy and regurgitating all the “intel” he thinks he’s gotten from Feng An.

So there we have it... are you all ready for the final episodes?

Final Comments

My heart is happy again that Mao is on the right team and that the Xiao family is safe. I’m most curious now to see what role Lejun will play, and if there’s a third person that the miracle doctor will be saving…

I started watching Chinese dramas in 2025 and "discovered" airing dramas later in the year. As such, 2026 is actually the first year I've really chased upcoming dramas and tracked what I'm watching as they are released. I wanted to share my list because I'm curious to know what everyone else has been watching this year.

^(I know people have feelings about these platforms, but I refrain from sharing my own ratings for now, and find that a mix of both are actually quite reflective of my views of the dramas anyway. Episode 19 - Sweet Promises

Recap: Wuyi tells Jiayu that his only ambition is the Beifu Reform: to ensure the Army can survive free from noble influence long after he’s gone. He has no desire to dethrone Mao or claim the title of Crown Prince. As Jiayu investigates Yuanji’s role in fake Ciu Jun’s earlier abduction, fake Ciu Jun resurfaces and kidnaps her, unleashing chaos inside Jiankang Palace in an attempt to widen the rift between Mao and Wuyi. Wuyi ultimately takes him down, but the incident exposes that he deceived the Court about the Phoenix tokens in his possession, resulting in a public flogging. In the aftermath, Jiayu confesses her love for Wuyi and urges him to rewrite his story - to stop playing the villain and finally step into the role of hero.

The Four Phoenix Tokens (and where they're at from the beginning of the episode)

1. Yunzhao’s token: stolen by Lejun and with Mao, who reveals it during the Ciu Ju incident.
2. Ciu Jun’s token: with the Empress Dowager; Wuyi traded it for the Cui’s private mines.
3. Prince Jing’an’s token: with Jiayu; the Empress Dowager returned it to her, thinking it was Yunzhao’s, when Jiayu and Wuyi used it to frame Lejun.
4. Wuyi’s own token: with Wuyi, the Phoenix Head which commands the other three.

Wuyi Rejects the Throne

This episode has such good monologue/dialogue (as u/CdramaAddict2 also pointed out) that I'm just going to include them as they are:

>I am looking for the Phoenix Heart Token for the minerals behind it, which can be used to make caltrop fireball to serve Ye. The path I chose was never in court. I just want to be Xiao Wuyi.

- Xiao Wuyi

This was what he and Yunzhao were arguing about on the night before her death. 

>You were born to be a ruler. If you refuse to become Crown Prince Wenxi and sit on that throne in Jiankang Palace, choosing instead to remain a subject for life, even with the Beifu Army in your hands, you will still be feared and restrained by others all your life. Your every move will be constrained.

- Li Fuhua (Princess Yunzhao)

Not only does Wuyi think being a Crown Prince will still constrain him, just in different ways, he tells her that he is severely injured and would rather spend his limited lifespan protecting the Army. 

When he asks Jiayu to promise she’ll have the courage to trust again, she adds:

>I also promise you that I will help you uncover the secret of the Phoenix Heart Token, find the connection between the token and the mine, and help you create the caltrop fireball. Let me be your strongest support.

- Xie Jiayu

Melt my heart. She’s right - kindness without power is a weakness, and Ye needs Beifu. She supports him, not only because she trusts him but also because she wholeheartedly agrees with his mission. 

Wuyi wants to live longer now and while he promises Ruisheng he’ll do whatever it takes to extend his life, Jiayu immediately dives into the secrets of the tokens adn their connections to the mines.  

Yuanji’s Love Triangle

Poor Yuanji. She helped the Empress Dowager abduct fake Ciu Jun only because her parents were being held hostage. Wuyi and Anming knew, and neither blamed her. Wuyi even teases his brother about pursuing her before she falls for Liu Zhaolin (the Runheng look-alike). To me, this Zhaolin is sus. Could he be the real Runheng? If so, is the memory loss real… or is he faking it?

The Ashina Qi Showdown

Fake Ciu Jun is actually Ashina Qi, who dies thinking about his dead eagle, Mingdi. More importantly, the bromance whiplash continues. You’d think saving Mao’s life would mend Wuyi and Mao's friendship.  

We don’t know because Jiayu is now forced to watch helplessly as Wuyi gets caned. But wait for it… we get the sweetest Wuyi-Jiayu scenes after!

She confesses her love!

She really knows how to alleviate the pain of his flogging… much better than the time she tried distracting him by flaunting her love for Mao. 

She begs him to take better care of himself. She insists on staying by his side, even though he never intended to keep her there. She doesn’t want to rely on the arrangements he’d make for her after his death. Villains don’t have happy endings, and she wants to be the wife of a hero.

She wants him to live.
She wants him to be honoured.
She wants him to rewrite his narrative.

>Then, I promise you, too. I will always choose you and trust you. In the future, treat this place as your own home.

- Xie Jiayu

Again, melt my heart.

Episode 20 - Poison and Power

Recap: Mao appears to be poisoned, and his maid Chan urgently calls Wuyi for help. Wuyi, Jiayu, and Yuanji capture Imperial Physician Qin, who confesses not only to poisoning Mao, but also to murdering Prince Su and Prince Ning thirteen years ago under the Empress Dowager’s orders. Although her actions cleared the way for the current emperor to ascend the throne, the Emperor was also poisoned and has been clinging to life for the past decade. Yuanji manages to sway the Imperial Guards - controlled by the He family - to follow her command. In doing so, the He family pleads guilty for their complicity and pledges support for the Beifu Reform as retribution. With her power shattered, the Empress Dowager is “imprisoned”, and Mao is granted full authority. Believing he’s won, he sends Lejun away… only for Jiayu to intervene and force Lejun to marry the Eagle King as a spy for Ye. Rather than being intimidated by Wuyi being Crown Prince Wenxi, Mao’s ambition to keep the throne intensifies. 

Yuanji, the MVP

Yuanji is the VIP in this episode! After Anming warns her that Wuyi plans to move against the Empress Dowager and a heart-to-heart with Ruisheng, she gets the He family to back her.

Wuyi takes a page out of Lu Jianglai’s character in Glory and pretends he’s more injured than he really is after the flogging. It’s shameless and hilarious - peak Hou Minghao.

The Empress Dowager truly believed she had everything under control:

• assassinate Mao
• abolish the Beifu reform
• Install her own puppet Crown Prince.

 

Sure, Qin Sheng testifies against her, but she did not anticipate that Yuanji could persuade the He family and Imperial Guards to abandon her and align with Wuyi! I am loving this theme of the younger generation correcting the sins of their families. The He family becomes the example, with Yuanji formally replacing the Empress Dowager as the head of the family. Oh and the Emperor has a name now. EMPEROR YAN.

To add the cherry on top in her revenge against the Empress Dowager for exterminating the Pei clan (Runheng’s family), she tells her about the Emperor’s secret edict: that she must die with him when he passes.

More Bromance Whiplash

For a moment, it looks like Mao and Wuyi are back on the same page. They work together to bring down the Empress Dowager. It feels almost… hopeful.

But no.

The whiplash returns.

It was Mao’s plan all along to let Ashina Qi escape and kidnap Jiayu. Mao has changed — he knows how to threaten, manipulate, and scheme.

Mao blames Wuyi for indulging Jiayu’s revenge for her mother. Because when it comes right or wrong, Lejun will always be his exception. And just like that, their friendship fractures completely.

The breakup is official.

Mao now sees Wuy as a rival — especially with the truth of Crown Prince Wenxi hanging between them. Gah, remember when Mao first returned, Wuyi welcomed him and they hugged as best friends.

Sparks Note Recap Before I Dive In

• Twenty years ago, noble families of Ye opposed reforms that threatened their interests and withheld military aid during Northern Qin’s invasion.
• This caused the deaths of Emperor Wenxi, his empress, and presumably the Crown Prince.
• The An and Lu clans of Ye were executed after being accused of conspiring with the Mulian clan of Northern Qin. 
• Grand Tutor Xie Huaigui wants to uncover the truth, avenge the fallen clans, and clear a path to the throne for his son, Li Mao.
• Fake Cui Jun has been secretly aiding the Eagle King by mining ore for their weapons for the last twenty years.
• The Phoenix Heart tokens are tied to the throne’s rightful heir and reveal a map of mineral deposits created by the real Cui Jun.
• Li Lejun kills Yunzhao to steal her token and secure Li Mao’s claim to the throne.

Episode 17 - The Confessions

Recap: Li Mao confronts Huaigui about his lineage. Wuyi refuses to hand over Cui Jun until he reveals the location of his token, but Ciu Jun is soon abducted, with a planted note claiming Crown Prince Wenxi ordered it. Jiayu clears Wuyi of suspicion in her mother’s murder and lures Li Lejun into confessing (to her brother and she also warns Li Mao that Wuyi threatens his power). Jiayu confirms Wuyi’s true identity as Crown Prince Wenxi and chooses to ally with him, trusting his vision for peace. With his backing, she forces Huaigui to exchange Yunzhao’s body for the letter exposing the truth behind the An-Lu case, vowing to investigate Yunzhao’s murder with or without Huaigui’s cooperation. 

The Jing’an Family Continues to be a Breath of Fresh Air

Ruisheng, Yuanji, and Anming all pitch in to take care of grieving Jaiyu as she keeps vigil at her mother’s memorial, making sure she follows the proper mourning rites. This was so lovely to see after Huaigui publicly disowned her. I also love the comedic relief provided by Ruisheng gossiping about Qing Long, Yan Xue, and Nanxing, while Yuanji bickers with her over bets!

So... who DOES Qing Long like?

Jiayu’s Doubts

I’m sad that Jiayu once suspected Wuyi. He’s hurt, but also incredibly understanding… I guess since he was still hiding the truth about his connection to her mom. At least now, all misunderstandings are cleared.

The Love Confession

My heart belongs to you.

After gushing over this scene, we get right back to business where Jiayu goes full Enola Holmes, conducting her own investigation to confirm Wuyi’s true identity as a lunatic of high caliber.

My reaction too if someone was manhandling my face like that.

But before that, we need to rewind (because everything happens so fast) and understand the past: 

The Two Factions

• Xiao Ju was indeed once a commoner. He started as a stable hand for the Cui family before Empress Wenxi elevated him and recommended him to the Imperial Guard. From there, he rose through the ranks, helped establish Southern Ye, and was eventually granted the title Prince Jing’an. 
• After the downfall of Emperor and Empress Wenxi and the Crown Prince’s disappearance, Xiao Ju, as the Commander of the Imperial Guard at the time, had to break the deadlock between two factions: supporters of Wenxi’s return as the orthodox heir (Yunzhao was in this camp), and nobles who wanted a replacement. 
• Xiao Ju sided with the nobles and supported Emperor Rui’s ascension (the current Emperor’s late father). Since then, Yunzhao appears to have severed all ties with the Xiao family.

 

The Real Culprit

I knew Jiayu suspected Lejun! And as u/TheAlchemist420 said, I’m ready to watch her fall, and fall hard! She’s also clearly over her head by believing she’s broken the prophecy of Wenxi’s return. I get it - she wants to protect her brother, but turning him against Wuyi instead of working with him? How dare she.

New Character: Ye Xin, Shadow Envoy

Oh right… I forgot about him! Good to know a part of Yunzhao lives on through the secret spies she trained to protect Jiayu. Ye Xin helps lure Mao and Lejun “out of their hole”, and Jiayu could care less if they know she’s onto them. Wuyi is impressed, and honestly, so am I! She’s no longer the naive girl she once was.

Where’s the popcorn for all the guests at the Xie Mansion right now?

At the Xie household, Lejun has the audacity to show up at Yunzhao’s funeral procession. Huaigui seems genuinely shaken by Yunzhao’s death, but he won’t expose Lejun for Mao’s sake. Jiayu, clearly having learned the art of dramatic entrances from Wuyi, storms in with full authority. She publicly announces her parents’ divorce and declares she’s taking Yunzhao away. Huaigui tries to spew nonsense, including claims that the divorce is invalid without court approval, but alas, nothing “outweighs the An-Lu case in his heart”. In the end, he caves for the letter containing the truth Yunzhao risked her life to obtain so he can finally have closure. 

Jiayu then severs ties with Huaigui and walks out triumphantly with Wuyi. You go, girl.

Episode 18 - Justice for Yunzhao

Recap: Jiayu and Wuyi grow closer after she learns how far he went to buy the mountain for her mother’s burial site. Meanwhile, the fake Ciu Jun was abducted and tortured by the Empress Dowager into confessing that his token is with Wuyi. Claiming Empress Wenxi revealed this to her in a dream, the Empress Dowager holds a banquet to force Wuyi to hand it over. Jiayu and Wuyi turn the banquet into a trap for Lejun, exposing her murder of Yunzhao by presenting two tokens, including the one she stole. Cornered by the evidence and a witness, Lejun eventually pleads guilty and is imprisoned.

Wuyi urges the Empress Dowager to return Yunzhao’s token to Jiayu to encourage the remaining token holders to come forward. Li Mao accuses him of acting out of selfish motives, but Wuyi argues that a future Crown Prince must understand right from wrong, and the consequences of Lejun’s actions, which were driven by nothing more than suspicion and fear. Though Wuyi tells Li Mao that Crown Prince Wenxi is dead, he and Jiayu actually hold the last two tokens: Prince Jing’an’s, and the Phoenix Head token that commands all three others.

Jiayu’s Growth

Jiayu is really learning from Wuyi. She even uses her confrontation with her father to confirm that the real Ciu Jun wasn’t abducted by him. We also get firm confirmation that Emperor Wenxi was Yunzhao’s older brother, making Wuyi her blood-related nephew.

Huaigui’s Quiet Grief

Huaigui needs a moment of repose after reading Yunzhao’s letter, where she apologizes for not believing him and tries to make amends by exposing the truth. He’s nearly silent at the banquet, probably weighed down by both grief and guilt.

A Horse for a Sword

Is it wild to think Wuyi is actually poor? Because he is, after pouring all his personal finances into the Beifu Army. Jiayu, grateful for everything he’s done, gives him a black-iron sword that is a hundred times stronger than Eagle King’s Longque Blade. I think Wuyi’s sword needs a name too… maybe after the horse!

We also learn from Yuanji that Wuyi truly did fall for Jiayu hard from the start: he did not cheap out on their fake wedding, nor on renovating Cangfeng Forge for her. He’s been all-in since day one.

A bit of a side note but I'm glad that Wuyi was also able to negotiate the reallocation of Cui's private mines to the Beifu Army to upgrade their armaments in their scheme to expose Lejun at the banquet! Hopefully that helps with his finances! Talk about efficient scheming.

Runheng’s Look-alike and Yuanji

We get a small side scene where the Runheng look-alike visits Yuanji to apologize for his offensive comments and vows to repay her kindness. Hard to tell whether this is set up for a future plot thread… or closure so she can move on to Anming. My thoughts are loud, I know.

But also, we saw a lot of Yuanji in this episode. What is with that glare from the Empress Dowager at the banquet!? Wuyi noticed too.

Lejun’s True Colours

Talk about sound-proof carriages. Is it just me, or is no one sympathizing with Lejun… except for Li Mao. Her face-off with Jiayu shows her at her worst in my opinion. She acts timid, but she doesn't hesitate to kill witnesses, and her real nature comes out when she admits she regrets sparing Jiayu during her scheme to kill Yunzhao. She does not feel any remorse over Yunzhao’s death, and Yunzhao once saved her life! I mean… Lejun didn’t even try communicating; she just went straight to murder. 

And there we have it... is this the official break-up between our two best friends, or is there still hope? Will Mao take Wuyi's words into consideration or is his judgment too clouded from his sister?

If you get to choose a vacation spot with Cheng Lei, what would you choose!?

• Are you thinking about a day at the **beach (**wink wink)?
• Or something more exciting, like an amusement park where you and Cheng Lei hit up all the extreme rollercoasters?

So many Cdramas gift us with breathtaking aesthetics, from the cinematic landscapes and grand imperial palaces to beautiful and intricate hanfu robes and stunning jewelry and hairpieces. Combined with impressive choreographies and action scenes, and not to mention gorgeous actors and actresses... who needs the plot?

I'm kidding - I've dropped many dramas because I couldn't vibe with the plot BUT I have made exceptions and surprised myself. So which dramas to you, have the most impressive visuals?

I have plenty on my list, but if I have to narrow it down to only three, the ones that come to mind are:

1. How Dare You!?
2. Fangs of Fortune
3. Veil of Shadows

Moonlit Reunion and A Dream within a Dream are my two runner-ups.

Besides How Dare You!?, these aren't even my top 10 dramas (top 20 yes), but the visuals really stood out to me.

Episode 4 - The Regent

Recap: Grand Tutor Xie Huaigui brings Prince Qi (Li Mao) back to the palace, where the ailing Emperor names him Regent. This derails the Empress Dowager’s scheme and leaves her and Wuyi in a tense stalemate, but it prevents the collapse of the Southern Ye realm. Huaigui then ruthlessly escorts Jiayu back to Prince Jing’an’s mansion and forces her to proceed with the wedding, citing her duty to protect Mao and shield the Xie family. It becomes clear (to us) that this was his plan from the start, since Prince Qi is actually his illegitimate son with the late Emperor’s Consort An. Wuyi explains to Jiayu that he and Mao are close friends, but Jiayu stays guarded (though she does find his family delightful as do we all). The next morning, it is decided in court that Prince Jing’an will return to the border to defend against Northern Qin, while Wuyi stays behind to handle peace talks with the Northern envoy. The Empress Dowager takes Princess Pingning (Li Lejun) into her palace to teach her palace etiquette but is actually using her as a hostage while plotting to sow discord between Mao and Wuyi.

Wow, this episode made my head implode. Huaigui had a whole other side to him. If I understand correctly, Prince Qi and Jiayu are half-siblings… talk about an “oh sh*t” moment and we’re only on episode 4! Peter Ho really plays the best unhinged characters. Killing Cang’er right in front of Jiayu and having had an affair with the Emperor’s consort!? Talk about some irreparable damage in his relationships with his daughter and wife.

Have any of you seen him in Unchained Love? Because he's an excellent character in it.

The Empress Dowager thought she could get Wuyi to hand over his military power in exchange for a monument after killing 30,000 of his soldiers? Okay, we can deduce that this woman is delusional. BUT she seems capable and we probably shouldn’t underestimate her. 

Prince Qi Mao had a choice. He could have stuck with Wuyi’s plan and run away with Jiayu. But his bond with Wuyi goes deep and he chooses instead to save his best friend. WILL he regret this choice? OK, I will prepare for heartbreak but I love these two together!! I could believe they’d stick together if it weren’t for the ominous hints and clues that Wuyi is going to fall for Jiayu…

In my last post, I brought up their bromance in Fangs of Fortune. This photo reminds me of Back from the Brink where Riley Wang is also the 2ML there. I love seeing them together again!

Episode 5 - Master of Crafts

Recap: Jiayu settles into Jing’an’s mansion and gets to know Yuanji and Ruisheng, eventually deciding that Wuyi is genuinely a good person. Meanwhile, Wuyi is busy trying to hide Jiayu’s identity as the inventor of the faulty crossbow, but word still leaks, stirring unrest in the Beifu Army as soldiers question his marriage alliance with her. Jiayu is crushed with guilt when she learns her creation caused 30,000 deaths, and she privately confronts her father during her homecoming banquet because she recalls seeing him with the fake Xiao Sheng. Wuyi lifts her spirits and recruits Da into the Beifu Army, while Jiayu commits herself to repentance by designing a powerful new weapon for him. Qing Long’s investigation confirms Wuyi’s suspicions that the Empress Dowager is involved with the crossbows. At the palace, Mao overhears Huaigui admitting that he married Jiayu to Wuyi to manipulate Mao’s ambitions and keep him from getting too close to Wuyi.

I still don't get why her title is the Crown Princess. Wouldn't that make Wuyi the Crown Prince?

Are Yuanji, Ruisheng and Jaiyu going to become best friends? I would love that! Jiayu could use the sisterhood. I love the backstory that Ruisheng accompanies Wuyi in battle and that Yuanji helps raise Ziqi. Yuanji has her own concerns though - the Empress Dowager is her aunt and she specifically said she is kind to those who are “useful” to her. That’s loaded… what happens when you’re no longer “useful”... good luck to Princess Pingning. 

Wuyi orders Jing Lan to spread the story of Crown Prince Wenxi at his restaurant. The story goes like this: Crown Prince Wenxi never died and will reappear to unite the realm when the Phoenix Heart token resurfaces. Wuyi wants a record of anyone who inquires about the token. Is this Crown Prince real, who is he, and is Wuyi’s plan to replace the ailing Emperor with Wenxi? ^(OK, some of this is answered in episode 6.)

Yao (Anming) wears his emotions on his sleeves. He wasn’t very nice to Jiayu but I hope to see more of him. He’s very protective of his loved ones and I can’t blame him for being weary about the Xie family. 

How is Wuyi going to explain his marriage to Jiayu to his Army to prevent mutiny? 

The Emperor knows what everyone wants and he just wants to hold on and prevent chaos as long as he lives. But he also wants to make sure that there’s no major imbalance of power, and worries about Mao and Wuyi teaming up. Huaigui knew Mao was listening - so wouldn’t reveal his strategy backfire? If I were Mao, I would double down on my friendship with Wuyi knowing that there are people trying to purposely insert a wedge between them…

Episode 6 - Crown Prince Wenxi

Recap: Princess Yunzhao (Fuhua) serves Huaigui divorce papers and embarks on her mission to find Crown Prince Wenxi. She reveals (to us) that Jiayu is not Huaigui’s biological daughter and recalls the Phoenix Heart token given to her by a heavily pregnant Empress Wenxi just before she and the Emperor fell to the Northern Qin forces in the previous dynasty. Wuyi’s old injury flares up, and his temporary blindness reminds him that he has only three to five years left unless Ruisheng can find a cure. Jiayu disguises as Qing Long to attend the Double Ninth Festival Ceremony, where the Monument of Loyalty for the 30,000 fallen soldiers is unveiled. But the Empress Dowager plans to have Jiayu and Mao assassinated at the monument and then frame Wuyi for the attack.

We saw this coming. Oh and to answer my own question - since Jiayu is not his biological daughter, then they are not siblings at all. Though I kinda thought if they were, that would be Wuyi's way in...

Fuhua scolds Huaigui for becoming the person he used to despise. At this point, I don't think it will do much. As if he'd try to redeem himself. He's quite set on placing his own son on the throne.

Wuyi having a limited lifeline is giving me Blossoms of Power vibes. He has fallen for Jiayu but he respects them and will not insert himself in their relationship. That’s lovely but I also want our guy to be happy. The way Jiayu found out that both Yuanji and Ruisheng have other lovers and that Ziqi is not Wuyi’s biological son, ha!  

Yuanji had a Pei Runheng on her prayer card... so I guess she and Anming will not be a CP.

Episode 1 - Pilot

Recap: Xiao Sheng (Wuyi), Commander of the Beifu Army, fights against the Northern Qin forces after Armoury Director, Yang Yi, sabotages the Valiant Cavalry’s weaponry, leading them to perish. In the Capital, Lady Jiayu (Yao Yao) derails a potential engagement with Mr. Bai, a noble suitor. Moments later, Prince Changsha puts forth his own marriage proposal, to which Princess Yunzhao and Grand Tutor Xie (Jiayu’s parents) reject without hesitation, citing that she’s too young to marry. Jiayu, herself, has her sights set on Prince Qi (Mao), Princess Pingning (Lejun)’s brother. As the Young Master of Miraculous Craft, Jiayu meets prospective buyers for her inventions, unaware they are Wuyi’s people investigating who commissioned the repeating crossbows. During a funeral procession, rumours circulate that Xiao Wuyi died in battle, but he resurfaces at the Latai Poetry Gathering, where he kills two officials under Prince Changsha to avenge the eighteen generals lost in the war. He vows to strip Changsha of everything, assuming he ordered Yang Yi to purchase the batch of defective crossbows.

We are starting off strong, with Hou Minghao kicking butt right off the bat! Though we unfortunately don’t get more of poor Zhang Ji and Feng Wu. Episode 1 introduced so many characters and a bath scene - what was I supposed to prioritize? Hou Minghao’s visuals or the plot? Kidding aside, there are a lot of scenes highlighting Wuyi and his epic-ness.

The way he just walks into the poetry gathering like “I’m alive, mother f*ckers!” and then gives Changsha a haircut.

And let’s talk about Ai Mi! Jiayu is a master of crafts! That will be interesting! And she already has her eyes set on someone else! Princess Yunzhao seems very strict at first, but everything she’s doing comes from her own experience in the imperial family. It looks like she does not want her daughter to marry into the imperial family for her own safety and wellbeing. Alas, her fate says otherwise?

Also, anyone else get momentarily bamboozled by the scene behind the screen with Ruisheng and Wuyi? The Director knows what he’s doing...

Episode 2 - The Marriage Edict

Recap: Wuyi discovers that the Young Master of Miraculous Craft is Jiayu and requests the Empress Dowager for an edict granting their marriage. Upon receiving it, Jiayu tries to flee, only to be swept into Wuyi’s operation to eliminate Changsha’s hidden forces at the port and derail his plan to seize the Capital. Confronted with the harshness of the outside world, she attempts (but fails) to rescue trafficked women aboard a ship. After the mission, Wuyi orders the entire operation to be kept hidden from Changsha and sends Jiayu back to her mansion.

Ok, the bickering between Wuyi and Jiayu? Cute! The way she “protects” him? Cute! The way he protects her back by playing along with her ruse and shielding her from the massacre on the ship? Cute!

Episode 3 - The Wedding & Palace Coup

Recap: Li Mao (Prince Qi) returns home to learn that the woman he loves has been betrothed to his closest friend. Yet the engagement is merely part of Wuyi’s strategy to provoke Changsha into acting on his rebellion. On the night of the wedding, Wuyi quietly helps Jiayu escape, and under the guise of searching for her, effortlessly crushes Changsha’s uprising. He then reveals that he has long known the truth: the Empress Dowager orchestrated the defective weapons, leading to the deaths of thousands of his comrades, in her attempt to eliminate both him and Changsha by driving them into conflict with each other.

Our great demons from Fangs of Fortune reunite! Mao is all grins until he finds out Jiayu is getting married to his friend and gets beaten by the Empress Dowager for trying to change her edict. When he confronts Wuyi about it, he finds out that Wuyi’s focus isn’t the wedding itself.

Again, with his entrances… but like father, like son, because did y’all also see the way Prince Jing’an barged into his own mansion!? The flair runs in the family. Same goes for Anming for protecting the Crown Princess (who I am loving). I ship them both together. 

Me too girl, me too!

I may have gotten this idea from him playing a husky in My Husky Boyfriend... but taking a break from dissecting his acting (because he can probably pull off any animal), let's think about his spirit animal.
