2nd month in a row where we’ve been overcharged thanks to smart charge sessions that aren’t recorded. £4 last month, around £10-13 this month (which is 25% on top of my actual consumption) - a common pattern where the first charge period of the day usually fails to be detected.

So I’ve turned on approval required via the Ohme app and set Home Assistant to auto approve when it reaches 23:30 - zero chance of getting overcharged, and none of the incoming changes will impact that. I’ll check back in before winter to see if it’s any better, since there’s no benefit to me getting early periods before then.

I recommend anyone using the Ohme integration takes a good look at their bills because from what I can see it’s a mess.

Local hardware/software advice

I’ve got a local server that I currently use for Home Assistant/Plex/misc purposes that I’m considering extending to allow for permanently hosted local LLM tasks.

This is off the back of playing around with Qwen 3.6 27B on my desktop/gaming system which has a 7900XTX, and I’ve been pleased with the results. Unfortunately I don’t have the money for an extra 7900XTX or to replace it with an equivalent GPU for gaming purposes so I’d need to economise.

I run Ubuntu on the home server with my hosted applications all inside docker containers, which is a setup that’s worked well for me and I’d be keeping. In the UK it looks like I should be able to get either 7600XT 16GBs or Intel Arc A770 16GBs for £200 or less each used, which I’d be looking to eventually run a pair of.

Would there be any technical reason that this wouldn’t play nicely with llama.cpp hosted in a docker container on a Ubuntu server? Any hardware/software combinations I’d be better off looking at instead of the cards listed above?
