Hello, I’m from Cuba, 21 years old, and I’m hoping to try to find a better life in Uruguay together with my mother.
I’ve worked as a Tour Guide, Community Manager, Sales Promoter, and my most recent role was Head of Public Relations. All of this has been in 5-star hotels and for big, well-known, powerful chains, like Muthu Grand Muthu, Kempinski, Archipelago, Blue Diamond. There’s a small catch, though: despite having direct interaction with these chains and often being their only representatives in the country, all of us — from an ordinary worker, to a mid-level manager like me, even the directors — are just cheap labor for the State. Because even though we work directly at the disposal of these hotel chains and take on significant roles, we only earn a salary of around 20 to 40 dollars, and this is in the tourism sector, one of the best-paid in the country.
The dilemma comes from the government acting as an intermediary between us and the hotel chains — like I was saying, cheap labor.
I completed a technical degree in accounting. After finishing military service, I started working as a tour guide while also attending my first year of university in tourism, which I dropped and later picked up again when I became Head of Public Relations.
I speak English and French; however, given the situation in my country, I only have national accreditation, which is mandatory to work in the roles I mentioned. I’ve been studying Japanese for a long time. My current efforts and interests are leading me to focus on Mandarin Chinese, but I’m still a long way from being proficient in either. I’m fascinated by Asian culture. It would be great to have an Asian girlfriend or boyfriend.
But right now, because of the political, economic, and financial situation in the country, tourism in Cuba no longer exists — there’s no fuel, no electricity, no social stability. I’m neither studying nor working.
My goal in life is to create my own business or project that gives me passive income, without all the stress that comes with managing a multinational or similarly complex systems. However, there’s a clear limitation that the passport I hold represents, along with the outdated mindset and knowledge brought about by the already-mentioned economic, political, and social situation.
If you can share any information or provide any kind of support in any way, I’d be forever grateful.
