I just finished NCFOM and I think it's like Conrad's, Lord Jim. Conrad's protagonist has grandiose ideas about himself and then, when his mettle is tested, he fails and deconstructs. Likewise, Bell's self-perceived failure in Vietnam haunts him throughout time. All characters get a brutal wake-up call that they are the sum total of their poor/ill-advised choice(s) and the take-away (for me) is that no one escapes this cosmic reckoning.

Moreover, Bell reminded me of a segment from T.S. Eliot's poem, Ash Wednesday: "And pray that I may forget / These matters that with myself I too much discuss / Too much explain..." The point being, whether judgment comes from within (e.g., Bell's conscience) or by some external agent (Chigurh), it's inescapable.

In broadscope, the senior narrator conveys the sense that young people generally don't have the perspective (or reflective capacity) to recognize the futility/failure at the core of all human endeavors.
