Question about AMoL
I have another question. This time it's about Rand's battle against the DO. There is something that I dont really get.
How was the Callandor trap set up exactly?
Moridin was trapped in a circle with Nyn and Moraine because of Callandor. Was Rand part of that circle?
The way Callandor works makes me think he was not, because a woman would have to lead that circle. Obviously Rand was the one weaving, but he also used Saidar which kind of implies he was in fact part of the circle. How come?
Rand also used the True Power. I can accept he used his balefire connection with Moridin to do so, but Im not sure how Moridin being trapped in a circle affects that. If Moridin cant use the True Power, could Rand?
Or was Rand in fact part of the circle and he was in fact in control and Callandor simply doesnt need a woman to be in control? Then why trapping Moridin?
I am a bit confused. Can you help me out?
Scene with Semirhage and Rand
It may be obvious but it somehow went completely over my head: When Semirhage captured Rand with the domination band, Rand used the True Power to free himself.
How was that possible?
Was it Semirhage's access to the True Power that Rand somehow could draw on using the domination band?
Was it the bale fire connection to Moridin that granted him access (cant remember if that had already happened at that point)? If so, are there any other instances Rand uses the True Power?
Was it a punishment to Semirhage by the DO?
Im sure there is something important im missing, so im hoping you can help me out!
I completed my first turning of the Wheel. Wow!
This post is obligatory once you finish the series, so here we go!
AMoL was 1079 pages on my version (ebook, German) and about 1030 was constant battle. Wow! What an amazing, wild and epic ride!
Some thoughts on some characters. Maybe you can help put some things in perspective, because while I absolutely enjoyed the finale, there are some things that didnt fully convince me.
- Elayne: Her role was important and well done, but in the grand scheme of things I felt that she did not have as much of a key role as the other main characters and fell off a little bit. She was a queen and her function ended up just being present to be seen and give moral to her troops. Dod she have any true battle achievements? She did have the command over the entire army, but had to surrender that to Mat eventually. She had to be rescued by Logain and the black tower and by Olver and the Horn of Valere. Maybe I am already forgetting something, but I felt she could have been a bit more memorable. That being said, her accepting that Mat is in charge and her being grateful that in the end she doesnt have access to the Horn of Valere shows, at least in my oppinion, she grew as a person.
- Egwene: She had some great moments, but I thought there was also something lacking. When she rose to power in the White Tower, she showed she was able to see beyond herself as a person and really thought what it meant to be Amyrlin. That the seat is bigger than any one person. She does still think that and it's mentioned on several occasions, but I thought her actions and other thought processes dont really demonstrate that anymore. Her primary goal often simply seems to be to make other people bend to her will and then to, well, kill a lot of enemies which is fine, I guess. I was hoping she had a moment where she is forced to take a step back or listen to others if that meant being a good Amyrlin. Maybe her accepting Elayne and then Mat as commander in chief was supposed to be that?
- Padan Fain: I feel like the entire series wouldnt change too much if he was removed from it, tbh. From all the stuff hes done, you probably could have found a random dark friend to do it, too. Maybe. Ill have to do a re-read to gauge this better. However, Mashadar as an enemy in the Last Battle was pure 'Rule of cool' and it still felt just right. No complaints here.
- Perrin: I thouroughly enjoyed him getting full access to some supernatural stuff, finally, and truely mastering TAR. His final battle against the slayer was his peak moment. Goose bumps. Looking at his feats in TAR, he blocked Mesaanas balefire and Lanfaers compulsion. He can smoithly transition between TAR and the real world, using that as portals 2.0, even being able to track where others are. All completely without the one power.
- Mat: one of my favorites for sure. He is outmaneuvering every opponent in battle making use of his memories, luck, by being able to constantly change his plans and is even able to set up a trap to expose Moghedien as a spy. His entire Arc ever since he left Tar Valon after being healed was so cool.
Honestly, there is so much more to talk about. Rands battle against the DO, Logain, Demandred, Taim, Failes detour through the blight... So many peak moments. What a finale to this series. Just wow!
Dragon Peace
Aftee AMoL, Malkier should be able to flourish again.
Lan did not sign the Dragon Peace.
From a legal point of view, could Malkier start a major invasion, once Lan got his kingdom back in shape a little bit?
